New Rod And Reel Combo

I was thinking about getting this Abu Garcia spinning cardinal reel and berkely cherrywood rod combo. I know it's probably not that good but could I use it for light line situations. It's 6"6 M and fast. The reel is 5:1:1

Sure you could go for that. There are any number of combos that would serve you well for the task you are thinking of. You don't have to drop a precious coin to get one, for sure. And as Packard indicated, you might find some gold at next week's Bass Pro Spring Classic.

I have a Cardinal reel. Good spinning reel. Actually looking to sell it because I don't really use it anymore.

Don't know anything about the new Cardinal reels, but I grew up using a 300 Mitchel.  I've handled the Cherrywood at DSG and it seemed like a nice rod for the money.  I see nothing wrong with your choice.  Most posting on fishing forums are enthusiasts willing to spend a fair amount on tackle.  However, I fished for years with equipment (rod, reel and line) that cost less than what I have paid for one spool of braid.  Caught hundreds,,,if not thousands...of fish on this 'cheap' gear.

 

I enjoy using quality gear.  It adds to my experience, but I know I don't need it to catch fish.

I have a couple of the cardinal spinning reels and have fished them hard without any regrets.  As a matter of fact, my first spinning reel was a Abu Garcia Cardinal and I still have it and fish it.  It has been 8 years now I think.  I even submerged it (Not Intentionally) and had to clean it out.  Used compressed air, and Rem-oil and some purple grease used for automobiles.  (beat leaving lake water in it).  That was 4 years ago, and it will be on the lake again next week.  Just about everyone in my house has landed a bass or two on that reel.  It has lived happily on a BPS for the last few years, but was on a lighting rod originally.  (Top half of the LR was lost, don't ask) Have never owned a Cherrywood, but for graphite composit with SS304 guides, at the price, it sounds tempting.  I liked the  lightning rod, and would buy another, and not hesitate on trying a cherrywood.  Although I do see a lot of reviews mentioning a broken tip.  Maybe people who don;t know how to use a drag, or abuse a rod, you just never know.  Let us know how that cherrywood rod works out for you.  At that price........  I might just have to pick one up myself.  I am on a super tight budgt these days.  Still gotta fish thiugh.

I have one that's about 7 years old athat I still use and itsheld up great. I was happy enough with that one to buy another one last season for a cheap ultra light setup and one for my dad for fathers day. For the price its a nice rod.

I bought one Cherrywood and it lasted a month. It snapped on a hook set. I would go with an amp or lightning if bass fishing. Just my thoughts.

Both my sons have been fishing cherry woods for the last 2 years. Both rods 7m spinning and 6.6 m casting has landed numerous fish and have taken all the abuse a teen and per teen can dish out. Not the most sensitive rods ever but good for the money.

Dear Andy, The AMP and the Cherrywood have SS304 guides, while the Lightening rod, even though they are Stainless Steel, they are not SS304. We hope this helps. Best regards, Berkley Customer Service
