fl_bass Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Not too long ago I asked about how to spend my gift cards at BPS for my first baitcaster. After looking at the options and the big sale. I will be getting the PQ reel and the veritas MH fast tip rod and spool it up with yozuri hybrid 10#. What do you think. I was trying to stay under $200 so I think this would be a good solution. Super User rockchalk06 Posted February 17, 2013 Super User Posted February 17, 2013 I'd say that's a fine set up. You cant go wrong with all 3. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted February 17, 2013 Super User Posted February 17, 2013 I think you will be happy with that set-up. If you have a couple of dollars left, buy a bottle of KVD Line and Lure to apply to the line. It will make the line more manageable. Either way you will be good to go! Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted February 17, 2013 Super User Posted February 17, 2013 Fine choices - lots of capability for not many bucks.... Quote
Jell0b0y Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 I think you will be happy with that setup. Congrats Quote
dave Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Wait for the Classic to buy. PQ for $80, with the reel trade in, $65. Also on the KVD, when Bantam1 was here, he said that KVD in no way penetrates Yozuri Hybrid. So, it is sitting of top of the line and drying, doing nothing really beneficial. I use it on my braid but, not on my Hybrid. 1 Quote

Super User LgMouthGambler Posted February 18, 2013 Super User Posted February 18, 2013 I personally would bump the line to a 12 or 15# myself. Quote
dave Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 I personally would bump the line to a 12 or 15# myself. As would I. Minumum twelve depending on what your typical waters are like where you will fish the most. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted February 18, 2013 Super User Posted February 18, 2013 Ah - good point. I fish only open water and get spoiled by being able to use 10lb on many of my rigs. For the OP, and with an MH rod, going up on the lb. test is a good idea. Quote

With no disrespect to Bantam1, I have used Yozuri Hybrid over a couple of years (one year exclusively) and I can say without reservation, based on many hours of use, Line and Lure works very well with it making the line much more manageable. I do not know or care what happens at the molecular level... I would agree with LMG that 12# is a better general choice on a MH rod. fl-bass these are all just details that you will work out in time. Enjoy your new set-up. 1 Quote
fl_bass Posted February 18, 2013 Author Posted February 18, 2013 I was thinking since I was already using 10# mono (Moimoi) it made sense to use the same weight line with the hybrid. I usually fish local ponds around Weston FL so there are rocks around. Thanks for the heads up. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted February 18, 2013 Super User Posted February 18, 2013 I agree that would be a good all around setup and definitely would up the # test on the line. I have a Veritas 7'3" MH/F that I use with my Citica (15lb Braid) and it's a good all around combo that I take in "general" if I bank fish or in my canoe (when I can't take 6-8 rods). Quote
Arv Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Nice choices. I would also recommend bumping up the line to 12#. Im not sure what the breaking strength is of 10, but everything I've read on the 12# is that its around 19#s. Expecially on a MH Abu rod, I would want something a little more robust. Quote

I usually fish local ponds around Weston FL so there are rocks around. Thanks for the heads up. I have but 2 Abu rods, one a MH and I must agree that it is a 'stout' MH. My normal selection is 8# mono for Medium rods and 12# mono for MH rods. I fish Central Florida when I visit. It is very weedy in the small lakes I fish there. If where you fish is anything like where I fish when visiting Florida, then I would go with 14-15# hybrid or 40-50# braid. However, it 12# hybrid breaks at 19# as mentioned in a previous post, then I would be happy to fish with 12# instead of heavier. Quote
fl_bass Posted February 23, 2013 Author Posted February 23, 2013 Took the plunge last night and picked up the PQ 6.4 lefty reel, veritas 7' MH F rod and the Yo-Zuri 12lb hybrid. I spooled some mono on the reel to practice so I don't waste the good stuff. I hope to be able to test it out soon. I'm a happy camper thanks to all of the help. Quote
