Shimano Core Or Revo Mgx For Light Weight Finesse Pros Cons

I am thinking about adding a uber light weight reel to the arsenal in about 6 months. This will be for very light spinner baits, little cranks, drop shot, small tubes etc. I prefer bait casters over spinning and will be using some light weight line with this reel too.

I've narrowed it down to two reels. Mainly because I like these two brands and I can work on them if need be. I'd be interested in hearing the pros and cons in both if you've used or own them.

I've heard some people talk about the core needing to be the 50 size to use for finesse baits. Is this true or will the 100 work just as good?

i have an mgx. It is great. I wouldnt pay retail for it (auction site has them significantly cheaper). I will probably buy the mgxtreme when it comes out. 4.9 ounces. Thats crazy light. I've beaten the crap out of the mgx and it has stood up so far. Currently I have it out getting serviced, tuned, and some bearings. The gen 3 premier brings a lot to the table as well at only 5.8 oz. I havent used a core, so I cant make a comparison.

What power rod do you have it paired with if you don't mind me asking? Also what's the lightest bait you've thrown with great distance?

I had it on a now deceased 7ft mhf carbonlite. It basically handled my texas rigged 7 inch power worms and baby brush hawgs (using a 2 ot hook and a 3/16 sinker) not exactly finesse. I'm guessing the total weight would be close to 1/2 oz. After I broke the carbonlite, I moved the mgx over to a mf rod. I've thrown 1/8 oz jigs with grubs. So maybe a 1/4 oz. I've also tossed some 1/4 oz jitterbugs with it without trouble. I don't think the mh rod would have loaded very well with the lighter stuff.

I have a core 50 on a bcr 803 . I seldom throw anything lighter than 5/16 but it's a super smooth ,great casting reel.

I have Core 50's and an MGX. Had them on identical rods with identical lines and the Core just works better, especially for smaller baits. I have upgraded bearings in both, but the Core is less fussy and is able to cast a little further, in my hands. I tried really hard to like the MGX as I love my 2G Premier's, but it just never came. I tried different rods and line weights on it, too. It now lives below decks as a spare reel, and I subsequently bought another 50.

I don't think there is much distinction in performance between the Core 50 and 100.

The 50 just feels better to me. I have the 100 mounted on a G.Loomis PR844C which

is my primary topwater rig. The 50 is matched to a MBR842C. This is my overall favorite

combination. I use it primarily for soft swimbaits and swim jigs.

I love my core 50! I got it used for just over $200 then threw bearings and a carbon drag in it

I would not pay new price for it I'd buy 2 curados or a different reel I don't think they are a $360+ reel. It's great but so are most $200 reels.

I have a Core 50 on a Cumara A 72 MXF and it throws the light stuff very well. I have a Core 100 and I think the 50 is a better choice for light baits.

I faced a similar decision as you did and opted for the core 50mg7.Did some checking at my local BPS and was able to get my hands on both reels and mount each on a few different rods. I debated the pros and cons of each but ultimately liked the feel and looks of the core 50.

I use mine for most any technique under 3/8 oz. Weightless flukes, senkos, ikas, plus 3/16 oz t-rigs, 78 series pointers, and even 3/16oz drop shot rigs. I have yet to dip below 3/16 oz but this spring when the lakes de-ice I plan on trying some 1/8 oz rigs on it.

I have mine on a 6'10 mh shimano cumulus rod which matches the reel nicely. The rod weighs 3 ounces and the reel weighs 5.5 putting the combo at 8.5. Part of what I was looking for was creating an ultimate lightweight casting outfit for baits between 3/16 - 3/8. I purchased both items during sales... $295 for the core and $250 for the cumulus. If you keep your eye out a similar deal could probably be found on eBay. Spooled with 10# tatsu it is a very difficult combo to want to put down.

They are both good reels and would be great choices I just find the break system in the core to be easier to adjust and finetune to wind or changing lure weights.
