Best lure(s) for this time of year...

So I know it's spawning time. I've got my rods rigged up. One with a black 7" worm texas rigged and the other with a white/red 3/16 oz spinner bait. I've got a few lipless cranks in my box (chrome with black back & chrome with blue back) also. I have other spinnerbaits and worms to use. I know the whole thing is to slow down. I'm going to Carters lake here in Ga in a few days and I've heard it's a clear lake for the most part. Any techniques I need to use or any other lure selections that might help me pick up a few fish?

Here in the northeast it's jerkbaits. I like a susp. Rogue. The waters just starting to warm up. The spawn here won't be until the end of April, into May.

well im here in the south ( georgia ) and the temps are in the 70s and 80s all week and warming up from there. the day im going is going to be 80 degrees.

well when its spawning time you cant beat a jig or a texas riggged lizard... I also love a Bang-o-lure up shallow... they seem to love em when they are in the spawning mood

i have a brown head/brown tail jig in my box i havent used yet. think it might come in handy now. ill be bank fishing cause i have no boat so i wont be able to really sight fish. would a spinnerbait and a texas rigged worm work ok too?

Spring is so wild I have to ask:

What temp outside, in the water? 30 degrees, 80 perhaps?

What visibility? 2', 20'?

How pressured is the body of water?

What structure is available? what cover?

etc etc etc....

I have three lakes that I fish regularly, one is very stained (3'), one is semi-stained (6'), one is very clear (20'). 

In the very stained on a warm day, spinner bait or chatterbait next to cover, cold day jigs and shakeyhead.

In the semi-stained on a warm day, swimbaits or cranks near cover/structure, jigs and dropshot on a cold day.

In the very clear on a warm day, hopping texas rigged chigger craw or crank, cold day jigs and drop shot.

saturday its gonna be close to 60 in the morning and get to the 70s by lunchtime and the high is 75 and partly cloudy the whole day. this whole week has been in the 70s and today its at 82. fishing report shows the water is stained and is 55 degrees at the lake im going to

I would recommend both hard and soft plastic jerkbaits.  Lipless cranks might be the very last lure I'd recommend in frigid water, because they are anything but slow. :-/

well im gonna try out my spinnerbait for a bit and see if i get anything then move on to my texas rigged zoom green or pumpkin or possibly black worm

Back of creek channel coves: protected areas with hard bottoms & feeding flats; pre-spawn, spawn, or post spawn

Spawn to post spawn: start shallow work deep

Brandon what lakes are you fishing? I live in Canton and fish a lot of the places around.

They aren't spawning yet, but they are getting ready and looks like they are starting to stage. Last Sunday at Lake Acworth, I caught a 4lb female, threw right back to the same spot and caught a 3lb male... looks like they are going to be on the banks at the same time. As soon as the bed is made, the female will probably jump right on it as soon as he's done.

Work with texas rigged soft plastics - lizards, baby brush hogs (green pumpkin for stained, watermelon for clear water). You can also throw a senko out - they should bite slow baits right now, and dead stick everything. You're gonna have to work slow, especially fishing from the bank.

I've only seen a few fish caught on spinnerbait lately, so I don't think that bite has picked up yet.

You can also throw lipless cranks, they have been hitting that hard for the last few weeks.

Just work everything SLOW... you'll pull something up on the bank. Good luck

EDIT** just saw you were going to Carters... Jerkbaits off points (I know you're on the bank... tough stuff). That brown jig might come in handy though, especially if you can find some rocks. I don't know if Carter's fish have moved up shallow or not, but last time I was out there I was catching them on 1/4oz spanky jigs with a peanut butter/watermelon NetBait trailer.

Carolina rig your lures later in the day... but it's going to be a slow bite.

haha yeah. small world. i fish lake allatoona. i live off exit 16 on 575 btw. i havent fished during pre-spawn and stuff in so long i forgot how to work everything lol. yeah i do actually have a 1/4 oz jig thats brown and ill get some sort of trailer for it. ive never been to carters lake before but the fishing report shows the water temp is almost 60 degrees so i should be able to find a nice cove or two and fish them for a bit. i have 3 new cotton cordelle lipless crankbaits that i havent used yet. two are chrome and one is like a craw color. think the water at carters is stained so what would be some good color choices for soft plastic worms? i have black, green, and pumpkin all are 6 or 7" and ill be texas rigging them. also where else do you go around here? i dont know anywhere to go. i dont like allatoona cause its too crowned and so is lake acworth.

I live off exit 16 too.. actually, right off the exit you make a hard right onto Lower Scott Mill Rd, then right on Brick Mill.. I live in the Brick Mill subdivision if you know where that is.

I've caught the majority of my fish at Carter's off those spanky jigs. The pumpkin with strands of chartreuse.

As far as worms go, I've use a shakey head with watermelon and caught some little ones. I use Roboworms a lot and up there I caught some on Oxblood light. I would think green pumpkin, black, and watermelon would work... those and june bug are the only worms I throw and do good on. Pumpkin might actually be the best color - I heard LB say the clarity was 5-6' right now

I don't fish Allatoona.. I should since I live right there at it basically, but I fish a lot of the electric only lakes.

The closest to us is Lathem Reservoir which is off Hwy 369. Lake Acworth, Carter's ReRegulation (on the other side of the dam), Yahoola (Gainesville) and Cedar Creek which is on the other side of Gainesville.

i live right off 16 off 140 make a right into the walden crossing apartments. yeah allatoona i dont really care for even tho i am close to it. me and my gf are going to carters tomorrow. i use baitcasting rods only. not much of a spin casting guy lol so whatever i can use for baitcasting on the bank and pick up some fish ill buy from the store.

alright so i headed up to walmart and picked up a pack of zoom ultravibe 3" green pumpkin speed craws and ill try those texas rigged and see where it gets me. they were almost sold out so they must be doing good.

we used to live at walden crossing... you're bout 3 minutes from my house.

that ultravibe speed craw is good - i forgot about that. Put it on a shakey head and go to town! The super speed craw is good too, just a little bigger.
