BenB54 Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 I currently have a CI4 2500 on a 7'm duckett that I use for an all around shakey, drop shot, etc. I'm going to get another setup that I can mainly dedicate to a drop shot. The question is, should I go with another 2500 or bump down to a 1000? Any input is greatly appreciated. Quote
thehooligan Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Id go down to a 1000 if you wanna save some weight. I use all 1000 size shimanos for dropshot/shakeyhead... Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 14, 2013 Super User Posted February 14, 2013 1000 series reels don't have as many drag washers as the 2500. It'll work, especially if you are in the braid with a leader camp. For straight fluoro, a 2500 or 3000 diameter spool helps with line management, and the tighter drag window. 1 Quote

As I am in the braid + leader camp, I agree. I use Stradic 1000FI reels on my bass on spinning gear. We're I to go straight mono, fluoro I'd opt for a larger spool, very likely. Tried that route on the 1000's but once I discovered the manageability of braid, that era ended. 2 Quote
via Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 since you already have a 2500 setup, i recommend you to step down to a 1000 size model. there are many times when you may want to use lighter line in order to get those finicky bass. the down side of this route is that you may have to fight the fish longer and be more cautious getting those big ones in. i have shimano stradic ci4 1000 mfl with 5lb sunline flurocarbon to take care of most of my finesse techniques. however, you can upgrade the line to 6lb or even go to braid with a flurocarbon leader if you are worried about line capcity. im only using these light line because im a bank fisherman and dont fish really deep water like others who have a boat Quote
BenB54 Posted February 15, 2013 Author Posted February 15, 2013 Well, I went ahead and pulled the trigger on another CI4 2500 and duckett rod tonight. I really appreciate input from all of yall. I think I'll definitely have to get a m/ml setup with a 1000 in the near future. While in a spending mood, I happened to click on the Siebert Outdoors link and ordered 10 J Francho specials. I justified my jig purchases because the money goes to a good cause, or at least I keep telling myself that! Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted February 15, 2013 Super User Posted February 15, 2013 Even for light lining the 2500 series reels are still good choices. I almost exclusively fish them using lines from 6# to 10#. Lines are a combination of floro and mono depending upon intended application. Never had any issues with line twist, casting distance, or detecting bites. Apply KVD line and lure and take the time to close the bail by hand instead of relying on the reel to do it and and you should be set. If you decide on a 1000 series reel give a strong look at the stradic FJ series. A little less money, .5 ounces heavier than the 2500 CI4, but a smoother reel with a few other cool features like x-ship. I have mine sitting on a 6'9 ML fenwick elite tech smallmouth rod. The combos is light in hand, balanced, excellent casting distance, sensitive, and the two items look well together. Just an idea ... Congrats on the acquisition! Quote

I plan on doing the same and using 6-8#. Also, I just started using KVD L&L the past couple of months and I'm wondering why I didn't use it earlier. Another plus on the stradic CI4 and Duckett micro was how they looked paired together. The spool and knob screw match the metal in front of the reel seat and rod grips almost perfect. Quote
