I seriously will never get back the two seconds it took me to read that.

You guys realize your making some serious accusations about a forum sponsor and a well respected company that will be unable to come here and defend itself

Yeah I compared the two and read the difference.  If you look up PQ Tournament you eventually can find the difference.  I can't recollect what it was right now, I know it was due to the bearings, plus the regular PQ is made in Korea and the tournament PQ was made in China.

There must be different PQ tournaments out there. I have three of those reels and they work flawlessly(super smooth and cast a mile) and both the box and reel say made in Korea?

It's not something that needs defending. And it's true.

I'm not accusing them of anything honestly, like a lot of companies...etc they do the same thing.  I'm not blaming them, but look closely at these two products.

If you weren't paying attention to the details, you wouldn't notice a real difference if you were shopping at the store.  The two reels like identical.

the backroom conversation between BPS and one of their contract reel manufacturers might go something like this:

BPS: the 2013 classic sale is coming up and we need to add something to the sale to spice things up. what can you do for us?

OEM: well, we have some old style pro qualifier frames laying around. we have bunch of leftover johnny morris signature extra handles. we also have a run of 6-arm drag stars that were an extreme flop as well as 100 gallons of discontinued purple metalflake paint. we have enough parts to cobble together 4,000 of them for you. we'll give you a really good price.

BPS: excellent! we'll feature it in the classic flyer...let's call them the "johnny morris extreme qualifier limited edition"!

BULL HOOEY!!! all BULL HOOEY !!!

I looked closely at the photos and the write ups. Open each in different windows and that looked exactly the same to me.

Please, what am I missing?

I traded 3 reels for PQ then went back the next week and traded 5 rods for Sig Serries II.

Two of the rods I had to get rain checks for and they came in yesterday. Picking them up tomorrow.

Thanks

The PQ Tournament one was made in China, I haven't broken it down to confirm..but I hear the bearings are less quality.  I do know the PQT does feel different when I fish the standard PQ side by side.  It feels smoother (the PQ).  The standard PQs I've seen are stickered made in Korea.  I also noticed the PQT's frame is a little more "shinier" than the PQ.  I mean you really have to pay attention to details to notice the subtle differences.  Having saying that, the reel is still not a bad buy.

If you are buying the off the shelf PQ you are fine, it is the one that are sold as a special buy...look at the name.  For instance - Pro Qualifier "Tournament" Combo, tournament being the key word there.  Or the Prolite Special Limited Edition.  It is all about the wording.

I'll give the reels a second look again tonight.

I'll be at the BPS in Arundel Mills, MD. tomorrow to pick up my two rods that I got rain checks on.

Sorry for my ignorance, I didn't receive the flyer either.

So I can trade in ANY reel that works towards a PQ for $65? Is this correct?

And this is only on February 22nd?

The reel trade in sale is over. I'm not sure what the PQ costs in the store now, but you can buy them online for $70 during the online sale.

Before anyone reads too much into this thread - keep in mind that it was started in February 2013 - it's last years news and has nothing to do with any BPS sales or offers in 2014....

I traded 3 older reels in and got 3 PQ, BC, 6.4:1 when the sale was on.

They were made in Korea not China.

For the current tab in store, the Pro Qualifier is now 69.99 with no trade ins. If you missed out, try and grab one quickly. This is the lowest the PQ's have ever been without a trade in.

Are they discontinuing this model for a newer version?

I don't believe so.  They are always on sale this time of year no matter what model.

Makes me wonder though. Lowest price ever straight out, and one gear ratio no longer available in left handed version. Hmm......

To me these are signs that something is about to change. I could be wrong, and really hope I am because I never got to get any of them and would like 3 actually. Every time I start to buy one I end up going another way. But anyway, even if they don't discontinue the reel now, common sense tells us it won't last a lot longer just due to new models always coming out from other manufacturers, and in this business you have to stay fresh to stay viable. I think even the best working, aesthetically pleasing, well designed and comfortable in hand reel can tend to get stale and unappealing after a while. Most reel models don't seem to be offered as is for more than about 5-6 years and it's been about that long since the current PQ was introduced.

I just edited the original title to reflect this and avoid confusion.
