BassmanDan Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 I have drove two and a half hours to the closest BPS to buy something...but I called the store first and made sure they had it in stock. They even put it back behind the counter - imagine that! 3 Quote

I wonder if the wife would like to trade in her Abu Black Max for a PQ 7.1? Might have to ask her. She likes to toss buzzbaits. Quote
gripnrip Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 Come on man! It isn't the stores fault. Â They purchase huge quantities of some of these items at a big discount. Â There is a guy behind a desk negotiating deals with the manufacturer. Â They take the quantity and disperse to the stores. Â One may get 10 the other 35. Â Â I know a retail manager and this is how he explained it to me. Â Rather than getting irate maybe you should say "Hey I'm looking for this item in the flyer. Â I don't see any. Â Do you have anymore? Â Hmmmm you don't. Â Okay. Â Well can you offer me another reel at the same price? Â I drove and hour and a half to come to your sale and I really wanted this reel." Â Â I have learned with a little patience and understanding you can get a lot more out of the employee rather than ranting. Â Just Sayin. Quote
Zeeso Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 Anyone who has their flyer yet, is the bionic combo thats on sale the baitcaster? And do you know if its a daily deal or lasts the whole sale? Quote
gripnrip Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 It is the "Bionic Plus" rod a reel for $69.97. Â Feb 22- March 10 Quote
The Rooster Posted February 13, 2013 Author Posted February 13, 2013 It's a baitcast combo. My flyer doesn't say how long the sale lasts on that specific item. All I can find is that it says Feb. 22 to Mar. 10 for the sale in general. Quote
EvanT123 Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 I didn't get a flyer and live three hours and a half hours from the nearest BPS. I have three rods and reels I'd like to trade in. I might have a buddy who is passing threw town pick them up and trade for me. Is the deal only on specific items? Or can be applied to any rod on reel? Can you use multiple trade-ins toward one item? Thanks guys. Quote

Thanks guys.Sometimes Shimano does not participate, not sure about this year. I did not see it mentioned in the flyer. Feb 22-27 is the reel trade in and March 1-5 is the rod trade in. You can't trade in on combos, they have to be working order, and you can use one reel for one reel. Same goes for rods. Quote
EvanT123 Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Thanks for the info guys looks like some might be going on Craigslist or straight to some kids at the local pond. Quote

Super User retiredbosn Posted February 14, 2013 Super User Posted February 14, 2013 Anyone who has their flyer yet, is the bionic combo thats on sale the baitcaster? And do you know if its a daily deal or lasts the whole sale? It's the new Bionic, they changed the name this year to Bionic Plus, I guess because it now has an aluminum frame and the dual cent brake. FWIW the flyer has it listed as a 109 value, but the reel and rod cost 80 each, . Edit I took a look at the flyer, the rod is white so it may not be the regular Blade (red), the do offer a white blade that has micro guides and is cheaper than the regular Blade rod. That's probably the differenceAlso don't forget the reel trade is the first half if the sale and rods trades start the second half, there isn't any day that u can go trade a rods and reel the same day, requires two trips. Finally my flyer came from the Savannah GA, BPS. I don't know why, as the one in Charlotte is closer Quote
Zeeso Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Kind of makes me wonder.  Usually Microguide rods are a tad more expensive.   I have never used one, I get the feeling they might have skimped on the quality of the guides to get the price so low...  Don't people have problems with line fraying on the microguides?  I might still bite on the deal, and return it within a year if I have problems.  What are your guys thoughts on the micros?  Also a little hesitant about the smart cast tech.  I am plenty proficient enough with a BC I don't need it, I am just worried it might have a negative effect on my casting.  I don't think it would be problem if I can basically turn it off.  Its just such a good price its hard for me not to bite... NOM NOM. Quote
gripnrip Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 I agree to an extent. You should be talking to a manager though, not that standard employee. Based on my experiences in Bass Pro, during any big sale, good luck finding an available employee.  Managers are more scarce.  Find an employee, ask the questions then have them radio the manager for permission to fill out the proper forms to get the discount. TiNuts Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 I don't think the bionic plus rod in the sale is the same as the white bionic blade rod. I think you're basically getting the reel for regular price and a crappy rod for free. It's like the pro qualifier combo they had for their Black Friday sale for $70. The reel itself is usually on sale for $80. The rod can't be that great. Unles they combo it up with a cheaper version of the reel, which could be a possibility. Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted February 14, 2013 Super User Posted February 14, 2013 The reel IS the Bionic Plus. The rod is different in that it does not have micro guides as someone in an above post has already suspected. I have played with the reel for a while in the store and I like it. Hootie Quote

LOL That is true definitely, but it definitely helps up here in Toronto/Vaughan store. The employees I've worked with had no clue what the hell I was talking about and would just say no. Even this last time where i worked with the store manager to get them to honor the online price and went to purchase I had to fight with the guy and showed him proof/email chains with the people I was talking too. Long story short I had to wait of course until a manager showed up and then with the inconvenience gave me more $100 off on the overall purchase. Of course it could be just store related, main point is be persistent, reasonable and when the time calls for it like my situation (3rd time) ask for the manager when all fails. Not trying to be offensive, but the BPS standard employees here in Vaughan (fishing area) seem to have no idea about their products. Only the head of the department seems to have any clue. I've been to this store many many times and I love going there still. (Still have better stuff you can't find at the local shops) But the CR is horrid here. 1 Quote
dave Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 You have to be careful during the Classics. Â BPS tends to come up with products that are not "exactly" what you think they are. Â Quote

21farms Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 What does that mean? Could you elaborate what that means. I mean refurbished equipment or items similarly named as another successful product? the backroom conversation between BPS and one of their contract reel manufacturers might go something like this:  BPS: the 2013 classic sale is coming up and we need to add something to the sale to spice things up. what can you do for us?  OEM: well, we have some old style pro qualifier frames laying around. we have bunch of leftover johnny morris signature extra handles. we also have a run of 6-arm drag stars that were an extreme flop as well as 100 gallons of discontinued purple metalflake paint. we have enough parts to cobble together 4,000 of them for you. we'll give you a really good price.  BPS: excellent! we'll feature it in the classic flyer...let's call them the "johnny morris extreme qualifier limited edition"! 2 Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted February 14, 2013 Super User Posted February 14, 2013 Ahh interesting, I kind of suspected they did that just never could confirm. When i saw for example the bps pq tournament combo it was on sale for 79. I was like what? The reel says bps pro q, the rod says bps pro q tournament. Figured it is a good deal. Had to dig pretty good to find out the reel has lesser quality bearings but overall the same reel as the pq. I have not used it yet, so I have not tested there is any real difference. I oiled it and seems the sane as the normal pq i have. Quote

Yeah I compared the two and read the difference. If you look up PQ Tournament you eventually can find the difference. I can't recollect what it was right now, I know it was due to the bearings, plus the regular PQ is made in Korea and the tournament PQ was made in China. Quote
