Quillback Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 The IOC voted to remove wrestling fom the 2020 Olympics. Apparently it's not "popular" enough. I can understand that there may not be a lot of wrestling fans out there, but this is one of the traditional Olympic competitions, hate to see it get axed. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted February 12, 2013 Super User Posted February 12, 2013 Everything has to answer to the almighty dollar unfortunately. Tradition doesn't seem to mean as much as it used to. 1 Quote
scrutch Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Is that final? I heard itwas up for a vote. I didn't know it was finalized. Quote

It was one of the ORIGINAL sports from the first Olympics. They keep Olympic Trampoline, but toss out on one of the original sports? Quote
Super User Teal Posted February 12, 2013 Super User Posted February 12, 2013 Badmitton is still in but wrestling is out.. what a joke. Wrestling is a true test of strength, endurance, and technique. A sport thats been around forever in most ancient cultures and they are taking it out...what a shame. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted February 12, 2013 Super User Posted February 12, 2013 What a relief - I heard they were eliminating Rhythmic gymnastics. Now that's a sport right there - and talk about a riveting and dramatic spectator sport - wow. I mean how could they even consider deleting a sport in which individuals or teams of 5, manipulate one or two pieces of apparatus: including clubs, some rope, a nifty hoop, a nice little red ball and even a pretty ribbon. It's just so wonderful to watch . . . . . . I'm so glad that's not on the chopping block. A-Jay 2 Quote
Quillback Posted February 12, 2013 Author Posted February 12, 2013 Is that final? I heard itwas up for a vote. I didn't know it was finalized. Kinda, sorta final, here's a quote from the press: However, the decision isn’t quite final. Wrestling, which includes both Greco-Roman and freestyle disciplines, will now be thrown in against the other seven sports vying for a single spot in the 2020 Games schedule: baseball/softball, squash, wushu, roller sports, karate, sport climbing, and wakeboarding. A final vote will happen among the full IOC leadership at a meeting in Buenos Aires this September. WTH is "wushu"?? Take out a sport that's been part of the Olympics since the very beginning in ancient Greece to substitute "wushu"???. or "roller sports"? Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 13, 2013 Super User Posted February 13, 2013 I don't care. The only thing worth watching is Beach Volleyball! 1 Quote

I would hate to think the fruit booters might get on the world stage. Wakeboarding? How is that even classified as a sport. You ride behind a freaking boat and jump on waves. Wow. The pure athleticism of being towed by something would boggle your mind. This world is going to hell. And what in the name of Zeus' backside is golf doing in the olympics? Thats about as athletic as being tugged by a boat. At least they have to walk though.I mean really come the blank on. I have nothing against the game of golf. I quite enjoy playing it. But an Olympic sport? Come on! Lets take weight lifting and track and field out while we are at it. We can put in Dominoes and chess! Maybe Solitare while we are at it. The athletic prowess required to succeed at those three alone will make nations tremble. Least I can still watch Womens Water Polo and see underwater boob slips. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 13, 2013 Global Moderator Posted February 13, 2013 Isn't Curling an Olympic sport? I'm sure it takes a lot of hand/eye control and practice but how does that stay and wrestling go?? I'm not a big wrestling fan but it has to be one of the most physically demanding sports out there. I get to wrestle with enough people at work to know that minutes seem like hours when you're rolling around trying to get control over someone while they're trying to do the same to you. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted February 13, 2013 Super User Posted February 13, 2013 It may be a shame to eliminate a sport that's been in the Olympics since ancient times, but I can understand updating the events. Even though I'm a golfer I don't care for golf as an Olympic event, I believe golf is reinstated for 2016, last time it was in the Olympics was 1904. There is a lot of talk about ball room dancing as an event, I'm all for that even though the scoring is more subjective, IMO those dancers are very much athletes. I've read pole dancers want in too. Super User Sam Posted February 13, 2013 Super User Posted February 13, 2013 Times change - things change. Sometimes for the better. Sometimes for the worse. I am not a wrestling fan and don't watch it on TV or go to matches. However, as said above it is one of the original Olympic events and I would personally like to see it remain in the Olympics. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted February 13, 2013 Super User Posted February 13, 2013 At least Poker didn't resurface Quote
Quillback Posted February 13, 2013 Author Posted February 13, 2013 I'm beginning to think that we should have 2 versions of the Olympics. We could have "manly" Olympics where you have sports like wrestling, boxing, track, weightlifting, etc. And then you have a "girly" Olympics where you have "sports" like ballroom dancing, synchronized swimming, figure skating, hoseback riding and the like. Super User rockchalk06 Posted February 13, 2013 Super User Posted February 13, 2013 I don't care. The only thing worth watching is Beach Volleyball! Women's tennis ranks right up there too Quote
JT Bagwell Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 I think they should get rid of some of the lame sports in the olympics and replace them with Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai. But on the wrestling issue, I think it should stay and some of the other crap should go. Quote
JT Bagwell Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 Olympic Bass Fishing would be totally awesome too. Quote
fish-fighting-illini Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Speaking of syncronized swimming.... wth is it still in th egames. How about we drop the s-swim, the r-gymnastics and change them out for womens wrestling? Have them wear the beach volleyball uniforms! Quote
