If I have a 50 dollar budget for a pair, which brand can I get that isn't complete crap? This is my first pair and I have a tendency to lose shades, so nothing too fancy is necessary.

I have a pair from Cabelas $20, amber lenses and they work really well. After 4 seasons now the paint on the frame is chipping. I was looking at maybe getting some SK S11 glasses this season. I can never find them in a store to look at so I don't know if that's a good or bad thing.

Strike King makes a couple of different models -

I've been using them for the last few years.

They do exactly what they're suppose to and are reasonably priced.

I know for a fact some of the older guys, particularly those in Florida and other places where the sun is very intense, will back me up on this....

There are two things in fishing that you should never be "cheap" with: your glasses and your sunscreen.

I want you to remember that phrase 50 years from now when you are still able to see your skin that has no cancer. ;)

I have a set of costas but i dont wear them at work (i work from a boat) for fear of breaking them, so i have a few cheap pair too. The Berkely fishing glasses at walmart are ok. But my favorite cheap set is made by Calcutta. I think they were 25.00. They are by far the best "cheap" polarized glasses ive ever had.

Just bought 2 pairs of the new Strike King S11's (one amber and one smoke) for $60 and got a free hat at an Expo this past weekend.

They are also showing up at WalMart now for $30.  Cheaper than TW.

They work really well.

I have a pair of strike kings and they worked really well before I upgraded. Still keep them as a back up/beach pair.

I felt the same way about sunglasses until I actually splurged and bought a pair over 100 dollars, and now Ill never look back. I am currently wearing a pair of Native Silencers which can be had online for right around 100 bucks (I bought the extra lenses when I got them a few years ago so I think I paid something like $140 for the whole package), but they are snug, soft, and clear as day. Plus I dropped them off my hat one day onto pavement, scratched the lenses reallllly bad, sent them back to Native and for $30 bucks had a brand new pair, frame and all. Ive been looking into a pair of Numas though because of how durable they are (you cant rip the frames apart) and their price is right around $100 as well. Only thing is that I cant find them in a store to try them on. I'll probably resort to trying on Scott Martins when I go down to fish with him next month

All good suggestions. I really liked the $35 XPS sunnies I had; however, if I didn't decide to change to Costas, I'd probably go for Strike King, Berkleys, etc. My kids have used these from Walmart and they are okay.

Save your nickels, I can fix that.

Blew my cash on mustard for mustard sammiches.

Seriously, though.  Good glasses are nice, but polarized by default means the block UV-A/B rays.  Unless they aren't "really" polarized.  My blue costa 580s were about the nicest pair of sunglasses I ever owned.  Dropping them in the drink was the end of expensive sunglasses for me.  I think I lost three pairs of good glasses in the drink that year.

That's a heart breaking loss, J.

My first purchase after buying my Costas was 14" Cablz.

I just bought 12" adjustable Cablz and what a big difference. I feel far more secure. Hopefully they'll be secure enough to not find their way to the bottom of one of the local reservoirs or the Chesapeake Bay.

These articles say slightly different to that so might want to make sure with whatever glasses are purchased

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/uv-protection/AN00832

" Polarized lenses reduce glare. Unless they're specifically treated with UV coating, polarized lenses don't offer UV protection."

http://www.aao.org/eyecare/tmp/Sunglasses.cfm

"Polarization has nothing to do with UV light absorption,"

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/15/health/15patient.html?_r=0

"But remember, polarization in itself will not block UV light."

Maybe I'm in the minority, but, I was only given one set of eyes and I want them to work every time I open them till the day I pass! If you loose them or break them, you need to try and not do that!, I'm going to look for the glasses that offer me the most protection I can afford. Haber. Check them out. Reasonably priced and great protection. I have had them for 4 years now, take care of them and don't wear them to work. I have a decent pair of Bolle' that I use for work. Not very expensive, found them on sale and have had them for 6 years. Knock wood, haven't lost or broken them but if I do, I'm going to find me another pair of Haber's with the quickness!!

Whatever you find, I would absolutely buy a pair of Cablz retainers. I now have the adjustable version and they're awesome. Hold is super tight.

Have tried a number of eyewear retention styles and the Cablz is the best (and original). Even Costa makes a $10 knock off, but not as good, IMHO.... FWIW.

If they're 20 dollars and they work great, you can't beat that! Thanks Francho
