thehooligan Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Im a spinning guy and i have all high end stuff. Well its winter, im bored and want to try another baitcaster setup to see if it will stick this time, lol. Last year i had two bc combos that i bought and sort of liked, i just didnt use it. Its seems whenever im heading out and reaching for a rod, its one of my spinning rods... I sold both combos to fund more spinning reels and now i sort of regret it. I had a lews tourney pro on a veritas micro rod, and a curado 201e7 on a st croix mojo rod. I read all the threads so im pretty informed on what reels everybody is talking about. The two budget reels im looking at are the new revo s, and daiwa lexa 100. Id prefer not to spend that much so im not out much money incase it doesnt stick again, lol. revo s is 7.4 oz's and $114 lexa 100 is 8 oz's and $ 104 Thats the best prices ive found on ebay. Im pretty much 50/50 on this one. I prefer the lighter weight of the revo, but i prefer daiwa/shimano build quality. What do you guys think, thanks for all opinions Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 11, 2013 Super User Posted February 11, 2013 I'll generally take a Daiwa over a Revo every time. The Lexa is a cracker, very well built. 2 Quote

Super User LgMouthGambler Posted February 11, 2013 Super User Posted February 11, 2013 Revo for the brakes system. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 11, 2013 Super User Posted February 11, 2013 I haven't looked at the knobs yet to see. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted February 11, 2013 Super User Posted February 11, 2013 (edited) Lexa! Got a 7.1:1, it is a beast, casts weightless 4" senkos to boot! Love mine. I saw someone, not sure if it was here in the flea market, or on ebay where a guy had replaced his Lexa knobs and was offering the originals for sale. Just took a (slightly blurry) shot of my 100HS. Phillips screwdriver and you're set. Edited February 11, 2013 by DarrenM 2 Quote

Nice, next question is do i get the 6:3:1 or the 7:1:1 gear ratio. This would probally be used for topwater and jerkbaits. 1 Quote

Maybe if I were a tournament guy I'd want one for each type of setup as then I'd probably have the same reeling cadence and not worry about which gear ratio I have in my hand at the time. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted February 11, 2013 Super User Posted February 11, 2013 Have you considered the BPS Pro Qualifier? I mean I'm sure you could get a bargain when the Spring Classic is coming up. That way you wouldn't have to spend over a 100 bucks for a reel that you may or may not pick up again. Quote

Im actually all over the place, ive been looking at used curados, a daiwa alpha ito ai, core 51's. I figured the lexa 100 has been getting great reviews, if i wanted to sell it in the future then i probally wouldnt lose much. Also, im 99% spinning so i throw light baits, so id like a baitcaster that can do that well... Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 11, 2013 Super User Posted February 11, 2013 I suggest you stick to 3/8 oz. baits and up, while you learn how to use the baitcaster. Quote

Also, im 99% spinning so i throw light baits, so id like a baitcaster that can do that well... Unless you're a glutton for backlashes and cussing, start heavier, then work your way down to the weightless stuff. IMHO. I attempted light lure tossing with my Accurists, but they were awful for that, so I left that to my Stradics and other spinning gear until I got the Lexa. Skipping with a bait caster is the next frontier for me. Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted February 11, 2013 Super User Posted February 11, 2013 Ahh I see, now I understand. I haven't tried my BPS PQ reel with light weights, I have a Curado 50e and a BPS Prolite Special to use for those applications. Which reminds me that is a good reel for lighter plastics. Quote
thehooligan Posted February 11, 2013 Author Posted February 11, 2013 Im actually proficient in using baitcasters with lures 3/8 and heavier, 1/4oz and lighter would be a learning experiance Heres one more reel i found at a good price. The okuma komodo 6.5 oz's, $138. Anyone have experiance with these? I know the perfect reel would be a curado 51e, just cant find one.... Quote

Part of your casting problems could be because of your rod. Some just don't load 1/4oz baits well. I thought I couldn't cast the lighter stuff well until I paired it with a rod made for it. I can easily cast 1/4oz on a curado 200e just because of the rod. Also check out Glenn's video on the subject if you haven't seen it. It may give you a few pointers. The rod, reel, and your technique are all important to light weight casting efficiency. Quote

thehooligan Posted February 11, 2013 Author Posted February 11, 2013 99% sure i just landed a curado 51e for a really good price, thanks to Et525i Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted February 12, 2013 Super User Posted February 12, 2013 99% sure i just landed a curado 51e for a really good price, thanks to Et525i Congratulations. Great choice. However, as already stated, be sure to put it on a rod suited for less than 1/4 oz. lures. My 51E is mounted on a Fenwick Smallmouth 6'10" Medium Fast rated for 1/8-5/8 oz. lures. There is a thread on here somewhere with measured actual spinnerbait weights. Might have been Goose52 that posted them. Anyway...I can throw a 3/16 oz. spinnerbait a goodly ways with this combo. The spinnerbait's actual weight is probably around 1/4 oz. Quote
Basseditor Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Have you considered a Mettle from Academy Sports? Normal price is 49.99, but they go on sale for 29.99 a couple times a year. But last year (2011) Black Friday, they were $24.99. I bought 10. Great warranty. Casts a long distance. I caught bass up to 10 lbs. with no problems. If one goes bad, they'll take it back and give you a new one! Quote
thehooligan Posted February 12, 2013 Author Posted February 12, 2013 I got the curado. I have a 6'6 medium Berkeley lightening laying around that I'll use till I find a deal on a nice medium light/medium action rod. Thanks for all the help fellas. Quote
