Comfortably Numb Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 I like my Pointer 100sp but wanted to try something different. Megabass Vision 110 is too pricey for me so thought I would try one of these for under eight bucks. I heard split rings are/were really bad so I hope they fixed that prob on newer stock. Any one use one? Quote
The Next KVD Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Yup sure do. They do catch fish but only after I swap out all the split rings and hooks. The only thing I don't like about them is no matter what the water temp is I just can't get any of them to suspend. They all slowly sink. I've fished them from 34 degree water to 50 and have yet to find them to suspend at any depth. But they do catch fish like crazy though. Quote
PondBoss Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 I love using them, I have not had any issues with split rings, but I don't try to horse fish on treble hooks. I have not had any suspending issues as Next KVD has, but I once had a hook break. Other than that I would fish them all day long. The Vision110 guys will come in here and say it's an inferior bait, but don't listen one bit. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 11, 2013 Global Moderator Posted February 11, 2013 I've got almost every color of the bigger size and have started a collection of the smaller ones also. They've been a really good bait for me. I switch out the trebles still but they got the split ring problem fixed now it seems. I bought one when they first came out and had a 15" fish pull a hook and split ring off my bait but no problems with the newer ones. The littler size is pretty light but it can still be fished on casting gear and still catches good fish. I got this one out of one of our toughest local lakes late last November on a Secret Night colored STX Jr. Quote
Comfortably Numb Posted February 11, 2013 Author Posted February 11, 2013 Thanks. Ordered one off Ebay to try. Quote
Quillback Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 They do work, buddy of mine caught an 8 lb. LM out of the back of my boat last December on the Pro-blue color. They have upgraded the split rings, I'm not impressed with the stock hooks, so I swap those out. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 11, 2013 Super User Posted February 11, 2013 I like them, and they suspend just fine for me. But I use the stock hooks untill they need to be changed, and stock split rings. Putting too hevy of a hook on it will make it sink. When I change them I put lighter wire hooks on the bait then what come with it, and it actually rises. Suspend dots or another split ring fix that. 1 Quote
jeb2 Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Putting too hevy of a hook on it will make it sink. Agreed. You have to be careful not to put too heavy a split ring (which really don't need to be changed anymore) or hooks on these. Since they pretty much suspend out of the box, it doesn't take much to overweight them. Quote
Comfortably Numb Posted February 11, 2013 Author Posted February 11, 2013 Although they may be considered a cool water bait, I would imagine they were designed to suspend in warmer water Quote

The one I got where the real early ones so I guess I'm going to have to find some lighter yet better quality split rings and hooks. I replaced the stock hooks with VMC so maybe those are just a tad too heavy. The ones I got now don't sink fast but they do sink. Quote
hmongkidBee Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 I'm actually not a big fan of these. I love how they copy the megabass lure body, BUT for some reason the quality is terrible. I purchased three of the new ones and when they came in, one of them had a GIANT split ring in the front and I was like I don't understand. Then I took them out fishing and the two baits that actually had the regular size split ring would slowly FLOAT UP onto the surface while the one with the giant split ring would suspend. I sent them an email and got no response. Terrible company to deal with. Last I'll ever use of these baits. Quote

I have a powder scale for reloading and it told me the death trap weighs exactly the same as the stocker. Quote

I've gotten several of those with no split ring in the front at all. Quote
Koofy Smacker Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 If your upgrading the split rings and you want your bait to suspend, Ill usually swap them with the Owner split rings and go one size lower. They are a lot beefier and stronger, something like 30 lb test or something in their smaller split rings, but going down in size stops the weight from going up. Sometimes the same can be said in hooks, sometimes different. Best thing to do is just experiment with them. Take a box of split rings and hooks to a pond one day and swap them out until you get it right. If you find a combo that you really like but it tends to float up just a bit while the water is cold, it should suspend more as the water temp rises, but you could also use suspendots if you want to keep it weighted for that water temp. Its a painful process, similar to tuning crankbaits, but once you get them dialed in they tend to be lights out Quote

Always a good idea to have suspend dots on hand when fishing any "suspending" bait. Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 13, 2013 Global Moderator Posted February 13, 2013 I've seen that myself. A $25 bait with a missing split ring? Inexcusable! X2, seems there shouldn't be any assembly required with a bait that expensive. As for the bait floating, it's all going to depend on water temps. A bait can sink one week, suspend perfect next week, and float the week after that because of water temps changing. There's times when a slow rising/sinking bait will get more bites anyways. Quote
rangerjockey Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 I got a 110 last year without a split ring, called megabass and was told that the 110's intended for the Japanese market don't get a ring on the front. How some end up here I don't know. They were nice enough to send me some of the rings at no charge. Quote
WartownBassin Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 glad I found this. will definitely be trying one of these now Quote
BradH Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 For me the big advantage of the STX and the Megabass it copied is the internal weight system. They all suspend but the weight transfer baits cast better than a Husky Jerk or Rogue type suspending jerkbait. I can spend more time with the bait in the water and hit spooky fish from a greater distance. For the same price as an STX you can grab an Xcalibur EEratic Shad and not have to swap out the hooks. They have the same type of weight transfer system as the 110/STX and the hardware seems to be better than the STX. SPRO McStick is a good one too and it also has a weight transfer system and has great hardware right out of the box. Whenever I see them marked down to $5-$10 I empty the shelf Quote
Comfortably Numb Posted February 13, 2013 Author Posted February 13, 2013 Got my STX from Ebay today. I got the Black Diamond color and it looks good and flashy. I took pliers and pulled on the hooks as hard as I could and they held fine. Hooks seem sharp enough for now at least. Quote
