War Eagle 44 Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 I was going through some old tackle recently and ran across an old All Star rod that I received from my mother for Christmas when I was first starting to get serious about fishing. She knew I liked to worm and jig fish so she went to the tackle shop by herself and picked out this rod for me. For this reason I'll never purposely part with it, and when I ran across it I knew I had to take it out for a trip. It's still a very good worm and jig rod even though I've moved on to "bigger and better things". It was more sensitive than I remember, but that's more to do with me than the rod gaining sensitivity obviously. I enjoyed fishing it so much that I may just bring it out of retirement fulltime. I was just wondering if anyone else still regularly fished these old gems? These were of course the ones that were still made in Texas and really quality products. My local tackle shop doesn't even carry AllStar anymore after they sold out because he says the quality dropped that much on them. I've not handled a new AllStar in some years so I can't speak from experience or am I in any way trying to trash the company. Simply wondering about the old ones still being used. Thanks guys Quote
Super User Raul Posted February 10, 2013 Super User Posted February 10, 2013 I´ve never owned an All Star rod, but I still fish with my "old gems" , I have a couple of Berkley Lightnin´ Rods that are more than two decades old. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted February 10, 2013 Super User Posted February 10, 2013 I still have a few of the IM10X All Star rods, they aren't used all the time but they are in the rotation. I have the top water rod and a couple of their 6'8" spinnerbait rods. I've also got a couple of the IM6 graphite, which predated the IM10X by a few years. All Star rods are great rods and I was disappointed when they got sold to Shakespeare. Apparently the brand has been sold again and the parent company of Berkley owns them. I have one of their crankbait rods and I like it. It is a greenish colored blank. Quote
NWI-Bassin' Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 My grandfather had a few a couple years ago on his bass boat . They caught many bass . Quote

I would love to see them start to be made in the USA again. One of my fishing buddies has their frog rod, it to has a green blank, dark green if I remember correctly. He loves it and I've been with him plenty of days that hes caught a number of frog fish with it. My grandfather had a few a couple years ago on his bass boat . They caught many bass . Yes I'm sure they did. I had forgotten just how nice a rod these things really were. Like I said I got it when I was first starting out so I didn't fish it all that long before moving on to GLoomis rods because I thought they were the rods to have and anything less just wouldn't do. Now I've been very pleased with my Loomis rods as well and continue to fish them today but I was just a little surprised at the quality of this old AllStar. Very sensitive, nice crisp action, light, and best of all weren't these rods below $100 when new? I can't remember but I think they were. Either way I'm glad I came across it again and I'm definitely going to use it more now. Thanks for the replies and keep them coming. Quote
rnlogan Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 War Eagle 44 I had one of those spinnerbait rods to, it was a reddish or maroon color wasn't it? Yeah it was a maroon color. I have that same rod love it. I have a lot of the old all star rods. I have 4 of the oldT series they are very nice with the titanium coated gides throws like a dream. I wish All Star was still being made. Quote

rnlogan Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 I meant I wish they were still being made by All Sta I know they have been sold around here lately. I actually bought a couple of their newer rods not bad. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted May 16, 2013 Super User Posted May 16, 2013 I fished them almost to exclusivity years ago. They were great, solidly built rods that didn't break the bank. I sold most of those off, and too my knowledge, they are still seeing action. I'd fish that rod your mother got you - smart lady! Quote
zell_pop1 Posted May 17, 2013 Posted May 17, 2013 I have the same WR1 rod and a TAS Spinnerbait rod which I believe is the same im10x blank-they get plenty of use. Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted May 18, 2013 Author Posted May 18, 2013 It's nice to see that some of the "older" gear is still going strong. I really like this rod, the only thing I'd change about it would be the guides. I'd prefer some that were closer to the blank. They are pretty good sensitivity wise, I never have trouble detecting bites with it. I'm not sure why I don't fish mine more?? Quote
Basswhippa Posted May 18, 2013 Posted May 18, 2013 I have had two of those. One snapped. It likely got damaged in transit as I was flying down a lake. It was the first rod that I could use 20lb Big Game and still feel the rattleback jig rattling as I moved the bait around. It was outstanding. Still have a 6'6" one. Great rod. Comparable to a lot of $150 rods today IMO. Sadly I had a perfect 80's Lightning Rod flipping stick that I broke in my locker a month ago. It was a great frog and A Rig rod. Quote
