wnybassman Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Not an easy question. Been to an endless list of shows over the years, and it seems like every one was "the best one I've ever seen". I like live music no matter what it is. Some stick out in my mind though, and all of them are small venue type shows. Mr. Big - Penny Arcade in Rochester sometime in the 80's Stage lights were so low Billy's neck on his bass was hitting them once and a while Savatage - Backstreets in Rochester late 80's Backstreets is HUUUUUUUUGE! lol Gov't Mule - Town Ballroom in Buffalo 6 or 8 years ago First time at the Town Ballroom. Awesome place for a show Les Claypool - Town Ballroom 4 or 5 years ago Les is just awesome Dream Theater - Town Ballroom a couple years ago There was not a doubt in my mind I was going to see a band of this caliber in a venue this small. It was also a month or two before Portnoy left the band. Bryan Adams - Auditorium Theater in Rochester 10 years ago Wife called me and said she could have a couple free tickets. I didn't want to go, not a Bryan Adams fan nor pretend to be. Went anyway (I like live music, remember) Ended up being front row seats in the middle. They friggin' rocked, it was a really good show. Did he lower himself into his kit at such a small venue, or did they just rebuild it around him once he got it? LOL Jeff Quote

A close second (for kit size) has to go to Jeff Plate of Savatage/Trans Siberian Orchestra/Metal Church Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted February 11, 2013 Super User Posted February 11, 2013 Alice Cooper, on my birthday a few years ago was awesome. My father in law took me and my two sister in laws. The man freaking hung himself during the show. He puts on the most theatrical show ever. I almost stroked out from head banging and jumping around when he played Feed My Frankenstein. I have wanted to see Alice play live since I was first given one of his albums as a child by my dad. It very well might replace the ones on my previous list as my favorite. It was because of this concert that my FIL will no longer take me to or go to concerts with me. Im pretty sure both him and my sister in laws were emotionally scarred by the time we left that concert. It was a very quiet ride home from the concert. I was in rare form thaf night. Didnt have a drop to drink or any other illicit substance. I could hardly move my head the next day, from head banging so much. Security had to restrain me and two other guys from attempting to drop twenty feet in the crowd to crowd surf. In my defense the crowd below was egging us on. We were crouched on the rail about to jump when security nabbed us. Didnt think about the chairs below us at the time. They were nice and let us stay for the rest of the concert though. We started an angled mosh pit on the stairs of the balcony. I felt like a truck had run me over the next day. Funny how that seems to happen after most of the concerts I attend. The rest of my antics from that night should probably remain unsaid. Quote

They were still an unknown band and got booed with people throwing stuff at them for the entire set. Alice puts on a good show but it hasn't changed much over the years. Uses the same theatrical props and such. His daughter tours with him now and is one of the actress' on stage Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 11, 2013 Global Moderator Posted February 11, 2013 Disturbed, Stoned Sour, and Chevelle were all here together for Twisted Christmas several years ago, that was a really good show. Metallica and Godsmack was an awesome show. My favorite concert was probably Brad Paisley though. I was working at Cabela's in KC in the fishing department and he actually was in there shopping with the rest of his band. I got to talk to him and help him find what he was looking for for about half an hour. After he got everything he wanted he asked if I was going to his concert that night and I told him I'd like to but being in high school I didn't really have any extra money for concert tickets. He asked me to write my name down and said he'd have 2 tickets waiting at will call for me When I told my girlfriend I could tell she didn't believe me and I was sure he'd forget but the tickets were there waiting when we got there, 3 rows back and center stage! He's an amazing guitar player and you can tell they have a blast doing what they do and they had several jam sessions during the show. Just thought it was really cool of him to be so nice to a young kid like that and he put on a heck of a show. Quote
Daddyodo Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Worked at a Hotel in Columbia Md in the early 80's. Merriweather Post Pavillion was right down the street so we got all the big name artists of the time. The following shows were watched backstage with party afterwards: ELTON JOHN...AMAZING SHOW MOODY BLUES CHARLIE DANIELS JOURNEY/REO SPEED WAGON......REDICULOUS:) KANSAS FLOCK OF SEAGULES/THE GO GO'S PETER GABRIAL......UNBELIEVABLE!!! AEROSMITH PAT BENETAR WANG CHUNG THE TUBES,,,ACTUALLY PLAYED GOLF WITH THESE GUY'S...OUTRAGEOUS HUEY LEWIS AND THE NEWS...SPENT THE DAY WITH THEM....REALLY NICE GUY'S I was the bell captain at the Columbia Inn and it was my job to check in the Bands, make sure all the bags were put in the right rooms and when they checked out I made sure all their gear was put on the bus. I dealt exclusively with the road manager for each group. Boy oh boy could I tell you some stories. I actually had Phil Collins call the Howard County Police on me. ( He accused me of stealing one of his bags...no I did not) All told in 6 years of working at the hotel I saw for free over 150 shows. BEST JOB I EVER HAD Quote

11justin22 Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Foo fighters was the best, awesome energy. They brought it for three hours on a make up gig that they had cancelled cause of grohl getting sick. Next would be chevelle at a local small venue. That was also great. I saw skillet last year and while not a huge fan they had an awesome show. Quote

Super User Nitrofreak Posted February 12, 2013 Super User Posted February 12, 2013 I have always been a southern rock fan, With out a doubt seeing the original Lynard Skynard was the highlight of seeing any and all bands that came before or after them. 38 Special , One I have seen several times, not one of those shows have ever been a dissappointment. Molly Hatchet The Dooby Brothers SRV , The rockin'est dude that ever played a guitar imo. The Almond Brothers April Wine Eagles Jimmy Buffet , One the highest times I can ever remember lol !! AC/DC Van Halen , once with Dave and once with Sammy, both were spectacular. John Denver, Far out !! Hank jr. , biggest dissappointment ever !! never went back either, love his music, but still a shame. Heart Boston , one of the best sounding concerts I have ever heard !! Rush , WOW !!! Areosmith Whitesnake Kiss Warrant Poison Ozzy Ratt Waylon Jennings Merle Haggard , my favorite country singer, seen him several times. George Jones , yes he actually showed up. Alabama Neil McCoy , the absolute funniest guy on the planet and most likly the funnest concert I have ever been to. Toby Keith Statler Brothers , what a great group of guy's, down to earth and will talk to you like they have known you for years. Conway Twitty Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 12, 2013 Super User Posted February 12, 2013 Two come to mind. Primus in '90 or '91, at Backstreets. They were opening for 24-7 Spies. They crushed it. Rex in '97, at The Bug Jar. Amazing. Just amazing. For big venue shows, I'd have to say Peter Gabriel, probably around '94 when they did the Secret World tour. Paula Cole was singing backup then. A few months later, I saw her perform at Jazzberry's, a tiny club where you practically had push her out of the way to get in the door, lol. Quote
Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted February 12, 2013 Super User Posted February 12, 2013 Garth Brooks. Just plain awesome. Quote
scrutch Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 I guess I could say that Jimmy Buffett at Wrigley Field was a pretty awesome concert. Man was that a party! Quote
