I fish one of the smaller lakes in upstate ny Canadice lake, it's like a bowl with steep drop offs 30-40 ft; 15+ ft viability. This type of fishing is new to me I usually head to the shallows and fish the green backs but people keep telling me there are large smallies.

Any advice on lures I've tried points w jerk baits, should I stay close to shore and drag tubes or parallel the drop offs?

Try a drop shot with a Pearl Rage Tail Menace or Grub. Smallies love that! Just let it drop down the drops where you find baitfish.

If you have a good sonar set up you can find the breaks, the edges of those are a good place to start as well as any structure off shore but you need to find and when you do find it a drop shot is a great way to catch them. Another way that works is a 3/4oz or 1oz jig with a hollow belly, shadalicious, or money minnow on it, you can work it on the bottom and it will attract a bigget bite but shaky heads and drop shots will be the best choice if the fish aren't in a biting mood. If you can find actual fish but you can find rock piles and ditches then use the shaky head to probe around, the drop shot for me is a vertical presentation to fish I actually mark but if I see possible fish holding then a shaky head will cover a little more water.

1/2 oz Tail spinner is hard to beat on 45s and bluff walls... Revenge and punisher make good ones.... I use a do it mold-nline willow blade. #6 hooks...

On a drop shot I seem to always get broke off by pickerel. J Franko I've got you beat w the largies, I have no problem catching them :-) I almost didn't even want to name the Lake it is a hidden gem but I think boat restrictions still keep a lot of people away especially so close to conesus.

I'll try the heavy spinnerbaits and jig heads. Thanks for the help guys, I also think the location of the Lake may be one reason om not catching them. I may have to go further North I havnt even caught one smaller closer to the southern end. I do have a lowrance fish finder a friend gave it to me but I mostly use it for water temperature and depth.

If it's smallies you're after, I'd fish next door at Hemlock instead.  Insane topwater action at dusk.  Position your boat along the shore, in 50-60 FOW, and cast as far to shore as you can.

Drop shot with Roboworms worked great for me this year in WA. I also got some nice fish dragging a watermelon lizard on a carolina rig.

For Canadice a Yamamoto 4" shad shape worm (Baby bass color) with a 3/8oz Jighead  works the best for smallies over by the north end of the lake, my personal best for that lake is 6 1/2 pounds with that lure.

Drop Shot! Roboworm! 3/16 oz. Weight can't beat that setup. Fish sloooooooooooooow. Everyone wants to catch fish and fish fast. Fish slow, and you will get more bites. If you can find isolated rockpiles big spawned out females will hold up on those. Not in numbers but solid 3+ lb fish!
