papajoe222 Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 I just picked up a few of the KVD silent baits and was wondering about their bouyancy. I fish a lot of downed timber and brush piles and like a bait that rises quickly when paused and was wondering if these or the 1.5 would fit the bill. Quote
mc6524 Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 They are an excellent bait. They have an great action and their wide body does make them very buoyant. Quote

When I would snag mine, I paused for a count of three. Most of the time it worked loose. Other times I used conventional methods to get it free about 90% of the time. Quote
dumfish Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 Sorry, I have'nt had much experience with skike king crankbaits. When casting shallow cranks in timber and brush piles, I like Bagley's BB1's square bills ,usually in a chartreuse pattern. When I hit timber or brush with it, stop and let the crank clear, balsa is very bouyant, and very seldom hangs up. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 9, 2013 Global Moderator Posted February 9, 2013 They float up very quickly and come through cover really well. Running them into standing and laid down timber is my favorite way to fish them. Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 I agree with everyone else, the 1.5 comes through wood very well. Really nice bait for that type of fishing. Quote
papajoe222 Posted February 9, 2013 Author Posted February 9, 2013 Thanks guys. Although I prefer a slow rising bait early in the season, I'll retrieve them slower and use a graphite rod so I can feel the line rubbing against the timber. As I'm not looking to actually bump the wood in that situation, getting snagged isn't as much of a problem as during the summer when I'm burning them through the wood. Most often the bait will catch a branch where the lip meets the body and a slight pause on slack line will free it. I havent tried coffin billed baits for this. How do they compare to square bills when it comes to fishing timber? Quote
Big Bassman Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 I use both the strike king and bagleys. I've always been a balsa bait guy, but don't have anymore hangups with the KVD square bill than anyother. I have used the coffin bill balsa in heavy timber and didn't seem to have any issues, however I don't throw the coffin bill as much as other cranks. I'm looking forward to trying the new Rapala coffin bill though. I have been throwing their DT Series balsa pretty regular and like them. Quote
