cannalbassboy Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 I fish the SRP canal in Arizona just about everyday but i have only been able to catch a few bass out of it. I have been fishing the canal for about a year and I have become obsessed with trying to the catch big bass that i see in the canal everyday, but I have been unable to do so. The canal has a light flow, and it run from 3-7 feet deep. The water is usually a little stained and clear on some days. Almost everyday is a nice sunny day with temperatures going as high as 100-115 degrees in the summer, 65-80 degrees in the fall and spring, and 35-50 degrees in the winter. The canal walls are made of concrete with some cover ranging from tires, shopping carts, buckets, garbage cans, dead submerged bushes, and plenty of other things that shouldn't be in there. Even with all the cover the bass never really move to far from the flow gates. As far as life in the canal goes there is 1-7 in. tilapia, 1-5 in. bluegill, bass ranging from 4-17 in., there also catfish and a whole lot of carp. I don't see any crayfish or crawdads but I have seen bass caught on soft plastic craws, though I've never caught any on them. I've also seen different types of urban lizards around the canal. I'm looking for any advise, tips, or techniques you think might help. Anybody know something I don't, I'm all ears. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted February 8, 2013 Super User Posted February 8, 2013 Get yourself some watermelon seed red chart zoom lizards 6" and T Rig them on a 5/0 EWG hook with a 1/8oz weight. Also, Gambler EZ swimmer in either Florida Five o or Bright Copper rigged to a 6/0 swimbait hook. If that don't get them to bite, then try some shallow crankbaits like Bomber shallow As. Quote
Jay Ell Gee Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 I recommend taking a stout fly rod (6/7 wt or higher, depending on size) and going after those carp for some C&R. It's an absolute blast! I second squarebills and swimbaits. Maybe toss a wacky worm around, or even a green pumpkin grub. Quote
cannalbassboy Posted February 8, 2013 Author Posted February 8, 2013 What types of bait are you using now? So far all that I've been able to catch bass on are Greg Stumps Roboworm 4 1/2" curly tails in bold bluegill, weightless or on a 1/8 ounce jig head hook. I've also had a little luck on small curl tailed grubs. I've gotten them to chase after some Zoom 6" lizards in chartreuse pepper, fishing them weightless as a top water bait, but they never strike them. I also T-rigged some craws the Yum 3 1/2" wooly buller in watermelon red. I have also tried a few other soft plastics with no luck, a booyah spinner, a hard plastic rapala swimbait that look like a little bluegill, which they chase but do not strike. Everything else I've tried has not worked. Sadly do to my budget I can only buy cheap Wal-mart tackle and only have a med. action 6'0" Whuppin'Stick with a Whuppin'Stick spinner reel that has a 5.1:1 gear ratio with 6 lb. test. Hope you can still give me some helpful advise with what I have. Quote

It's an absolute blast! I second squarebills and swimbaits. Maybe toss a wacky worm around, or even a green pumpkin grub. I've caught so many of those carp and they are a ton of fun to catch, I found out one day while fishing for catfish that the canal carp cannot resist hotdog. After finding that out there are just to easy to catch while the bass are sitting there sticking there tongues out at me. So thanks for the advise about the bass I'll have to try that out. Quote
