chris090981 Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Norman speed clips to change fast moving baits quicker .!? Yay or Nay ? Reason i ask is i read an article on a pro's website , But $ talks ! So i'd like to get some opinions from some average joe's !!!!! Quote
Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted March 30, 2010 Super User Posted March 30, 2010 i use the magnum clips for big swimbaits and never had one fail . for crankbaits , i have been using BPS's fast-lock snaps with no problems , i use the size 3 in nickel http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_7816_100010005_100000000_100010000_100-10-5 Quote
jdw174 Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 I use both the snaps and quik-clips. Never lost a fish or lure using the clips, but there have been several times when I've retrieved the lure to find the clip just barely holding the lure where the line tie had slipped in between the coils on the clip. It did give me cause for concern for a bit. Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted March 30, 2010 Super User Posted March 30, 2010 Have never used them but I know people that swear by them. I feel the need to retie often and I would think some fail to do this when using the clips. Creates a weak spot by ignoring the knot. Just my preference. Quote
NewAngler Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 I use them for my swimbaits. I love them. I just got a bunch of new swimbaits in, and I wanted to test them out at a pond I was at over the weekend. Sooooo easy and time efficient. Quote
roch1 Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Do these have any effect on the action of the lures? Quote
Stringjam Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Do these have any effect on the action of the lures? Well designed snaps increase the action of cranks. I hear a lot of people say they're just another point to fail. Stop using cheap snaps and they won't fail. A lot more people have line failures due to split rings than snaps. Using snaps has nothing to do with how often you check your line or retie. Blame yourself if that happens, not snaps. The most secure snaps are the crosslocks, but I use the SpeedClip quite a bit for cranks....just not on walking baits. Quote
bama_bassin Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Do these have any effect on the action of the lures? They give your lipped cranks a better wobble. That is primarily the only application I have used them on. It gives me the option to change sizes and colors quickly. I just haven't really tried them on soft plastics, jigs, or any other lures, so I couldn't offer an opinion there. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted March 30, 2010 Super User Posted March 30, 2010 THE most secure clips are the coastlock type. I have lost a few lures, especially spinnerbaits, with the Norman Speed Clips, but I still use them for small cranks and Traps. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 30, 2010 Super User Posted March 30, 2010 Snaps with spinnerbaits? : Duo-Locs have worked fine with all hardbaits for me, #2 and #3 size suit most bass baits. I remove the split rings. Quote

Super User Wayne P. Posted March 30, 2010 Super User Posted March 30, 2010 Yes, J, not all spinnerbaits are constructed with the "R" bend. Sometimes I switch spinnerbaits a lot during the day to match the prevailing pattern. The choices involve weight, frame size, skirt color, blade color/finish, blade style, and/or number of blades. Here is a 1/4 oz model that is very effective when the blue gills are spawning: Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 30, 2010 Super User Posted March 30, 2010 Takes me about the same amount of time to tie a clinch knot as it does to open and close a Duo-loc. I carry about 40 spinnerbaits, have about 150 at home. The only spinnerbaits I have that have a full twist are Musky baits. Quote

Super User .dsaavedra. Posted March 30, 2010 Super User Posted March 30, 2010 i always have a BPS speed snap in black finish tied on my crankbait rod. idk the size, but its pretty small. when i'm using the snap, i remove the split ring off the line tie, because i've found that with the split ring and the snap it makes the bait sit nose down and sometimes even start sinking when it should suspend or something along those lines. maybe i'm just ocd about it. but anyway, since the snap is not tight against the line tie like a knot would be, it allows your crankbaits to wobble more. i also use them on my little swimbaits i make. Thad Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 My buddy was using a Speed Clip a few weeks ago and had a lure come off. The lure got stuck in the grass and when he worked it out the lure came off the snap. I use them a lot but not when ripping the lure out of grass is involved. Quote

I'll bet about 3/4 of my cranks already have a clip attached. That's an easy reminder to retie. Quote

For buzzbaits and spinnerbaits, I use fish tank tubing (see link below), clip off a small amount as a ring, slide it over the r-bend and then clip on. It prevents the lure from tumbling down the shaft when casting or when running over/through cover. http://www.petco.com/Shop/Product.aspx?familyid=7897&Ntt=PETCO%20Clear%20Air%20Line%20Tubing%20for%20Aquariums&OneResultRedirect=1 Quote
I.rar Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 i use them and never had a problem. not on topwaters or spinners for me though. for them weakening your line , shouldnt you be checking your line every so often with any type of fishing? ive had line sneak under one side of a split ring... i use the regular size (not magnums) and i dont really see how they could come loose if they were put on right in the first place...unless that specific clip has been used and reused numerous times and weakened. they can be a PITA to get on or off sometimes but i feel they do enhance the lures action as opposed to direct tie. BassThumb Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 I use clips on all lures with split rings. On some, like spooks, I remove the split ring. I feel the improved clinch works better if tied to a snap rather than straight to the split ring. Quote

Just tie a simple clinch knot and be done with it. Fast as aich-ee-double hockey sticks. Quote
along99999 Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 I've used speed clips for several years on nearly everything. they can be a pain on R bend spinner/buzz baits, as mentioned. I've never had a problem with using them on any bait, although I do remove the split rings from everything except crankbaits. I also check the line every once in a while for damage, depending on where I'm fishing. The speed clips have never cost me a fish or a lure - a bad knot has, but not the clip. Quote

Cuz' if I already have a duo-snap on the line, I can just clip on the spinner or buzzer without having to cut and tie. I'm willing to bet it's faster then aich-ee-double hockey sticks. ;D Also, I've got a bunch of pre-cut rings in my spinner/buzz box and I tend to change my mind alot in the first 45 minutes ... size/color, etc. until I hone in what's getting the best reactions. Teal101 Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 Only on my cranking rod. It gives the bait better action and allows me to switch baits quicker. For plastics, jigs, topwaters I tie directly to the lure. Quote
