Skipping With A Baitcaster

What are some tips for skipping when you cast without back lashing? Do I need to tighten up the spool? More break?

LOTS OF PRACTICE!!!  SERIOUSLY!!!

 

For me it consists of a loose spool tension and very little brake and all about thumb control.  That and the right setup.

 

My best dock skipping setup is a 6'10" heavy Falcon Cara with a Shimano Curado 200B.

 

Baits that are 3/8 oz also seem to skip the best atleast for me..

 

But I cannot stress PRACTICE and through trial and error you will find out what reel settings work for you.  Everyone is a bit different.

go outside in ur backyard at night and cast in the dark.  it will force you to thumb brake the entire time....or reap a backlash when ur jig hits the yard.  baitcast skipping is the same thing.  thumb brake the whole time. learn what it feels like to touch the spool with ur thumb print throughout an entire cast and you are well on ur way.  i don't adjust my brake settings at all...just leave'm be but add thumb brake. also focus on the spot where ur jig is first going to splash down (as opposed to focusing on the 12" gap between the dock and water.  we usually focus on the final destination.  when first learning to skip its easier to focus on ur first splash spot....just like when skipping a rock

Ditto on the practicing part. Dont tighten up your brake...if it all possible, loosen it up more than usual. Dont get discouraged, bc it takes time to master. Before you know it, you will be back handing it up under there. If all else fails, get you a spinning rod with some 10lb braid rigged up with a weightless senko. haha

I have yet to perfect this. Actually "perfect" is the wrong word. "Risk"? I skip w/o fear with my spinning gear. Despite the fact that I use electrical tape to prevent complete spool backlash on my baitcaster(s), I still don't want to lose that 60-100 feet of braid with a backlash.

 

Which means I'd be better off having a practice spool for my main baitcaster.

skipping is something I have yet to master too....that being said does anybody have any tips on where to practice at at home? would it even skip on the grass or just sink in...would the driveway be the best bet?
