Dylan.747 Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Currently I have an abu Garcia black max 2 on a 7 foot medium vendetta 2 with 50 lbs power pro braid. This is the only combo that I can afford as of now so I was wondering if I were to fish frogs and jigs with it, would it be able to handle the fish without breaking under pressure? I plan to fish all types of lures with it as soon as it warms up a tad bit. Quote
Jig Meister Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 I am going to assume it is a Medium/Fast V2. I only use Vendettas right now because 1) I like them a lot for the price and 2) I am poor I use them with Lews SS's and for spinning I use a Abu Orra spinning reel. I have used 50lb braid in the past, as well as braid with the spinning reel. I have not used my M/F BC setup yet, but I have used my M/F spinner setup alot for all sorts of light/medium applications w/ and w/o braid. You should have no problems using that rod for frogging, they are stiffer than a typical medium (Most people say this and it is somewhat true) I trust these rods a lot, and for the price they are awesome, IMO. Super User LgMouthGambler Posted February 5, 2013 Super User Posted February 5, 2013 I would be worried about the reel being able to handle the stress before that rod. Either way I think you should be OK with it. Quote

While the black max is cheap, it is not that bad. I used one last season as a cheap replacement and this reel handled heavy cover jigging just fine. Never had an issue, it is not the smoothest reel in the world but it works for the purpose. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 5, 2013 Super User Posted February 5, 2013 Set the drag to about 5# of resistance, and your gear should be fine. You might have to go in and get some of those frog fish in the mats in lieu of ripping them out, but it'll work. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted February 5, 2013 Super User Posted February 5, 2013 If worse comes to worse, use some "thumb drag". Quote

TNBassin' Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 The Black Max 2 isn't a bad, or junky reel. LgMouthRambler just doesn't like it because it's not a Shimano. That reel will hold up just fine. Quote
