Its a nice fat fish congrats. Your supposed to close its mouth for measuring. It looks a little short of 22 but not by too much. Go catch a bigger one and be sure and you will appreciate the accomplishment that much more knowing for sure your fish was 22+. Keep at it, that one was close you'll get a bigger one.

I must say it's really nice to have someone so young and yet so knowledgeable about everything you have discussed so far.

Awesome job and keep after it and I think we have a future pro on our hands here !!!

I will agree to say there is always a next one that big in there somewhere or bigger, now you have all the ammo you need for the next time and there will be no doubt.

Welcome to the forum !!!

Good luck and be safe !!!

Great fish man, be proud of that fish! I'll echo what others have said and I would not submit it if you are not positive on the length.

The way I see it is by not submitting this one it will motivate you more to go out and catch a bigger one. In a sense, it will fuel your fire for the passion of bass fishing. I'm always out to break my PB and it really drives me to go out and fish hard.

Congrats again!

There is always a bigger one out there!! Nice catch though!!!  I would not submit anything unless I could say for sure it was 22".  Great fish.  I am sure you got plenty of pics.

If you had to ask if it was 22", you already knew the answer and that was no. Having someone "inflate" your catch to citation qualifying level by simply signing a form only serves to cheat not only yourself, but the moment of the catch. Don't degrade your integrity - go back and try to catch a legit citation! I've come within a 1/2" of a citation twice here in VA myself with the tail laying naturally, but I didn't pinch it to try and make it a citation. If the natural lay of the tail doesn't touch 22", it's not a citation in my book. Other's opinions may vary, but I won't cheat myself or the moment.

I am with you on the measuring of a fish but the VADGIF does state:

  • Lay the fish on top of or beside a flat measuring rule. Do not lay the rule over the curvature of the fish's body.
  • Close the fish's mouth and squeeze the tail lobes together.
  • Measure from the tip of the snout to the end of the tail to the nearest ¼ inch. See diagram.
  • Have an observer verify the length and complete the witness

information on the application. Or, take a picture of the fish and

complete the length witness information yourself

So he would be fine squeezing the lobes together and still be accurate according to the rules of the trophy fish program.
