Recently hot hit with a trojan virus. MalwareBytes said it took care of the situation and that my system was O.K.. However, not I'm having a problem automatically saving my passwords for my fishing forums. To start off with, I'm using Windows 7 Pro and my browser is Mozilla FireFox v.18.

in the "Tools" - "Options" drop down menu, I do have the box checked for "Remember passwords for sites". I've tried to un-install FireFox and re-install a fresh download. Still can't get the sites to remember my passwords. PITA, for sure!

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Folks! :)

Firefox .... go to Tools->Options->Security, click on the saved passwords button and see if any are in there. The cache may have been dumped.

I would install AVG 2013 free also, it will catch items malwarebytes doesnt and visa versa.

Also make sure firefox is not in permanent private browsing mode

Tools > Options > Privacy: Use custom settings for history

Deselect Always use private browsing mode

Alternatively you can type

about:config into the url bar, tell it youll be careful when it asks

then filter on privatebrowsing(one word), make sure the setting says false, if not double click it to turn it to false.

jhoffman - Security setting is correct - Save passwords for sites.

               - Always use private browsing mode is sellected

              -  in "privatebrowsing": browser.privatebrowsing.autostart;false - and -

                                                     browser.privatebrowsing.dont_prompt_on_enter;false

What a nuisance! Thanks your help anyway.

Yeah I am at a loss without seeing what might be going on more in depth. Did you install AVG 2013 also?

You would have to wipe out firefox's config file to get a fresh start. It saves that even when you uninstall incase you come back.

I do not have AVG on this system (assuming that's a virus protection program?). When I moved to Win 7, I had Norton's full protection installed, along with Malwarebytes. Full scans on each indicate no problems with the system, as far as infections go.

Your second comment - do you mean to wipe Firefox's config file after or before un-installing? If I do that, won't I loose all my bookmarks?

Thanks for your help. This one's got everyone I've contacted stumped! :)

If you wipe firefox's config you will lose everything, but it should resolve your password issue. Norton actually has a very low following in the IT world. I recommended avg because I manage 1000 users of a university daily, people who look at all kinds of stuff and between malwarebytes and avg 2013 nothing has ever infected my network. Yes avg is antivirus and if youre using it for your personal use, it is free.

I would...

backup your bookmarks(export them)

delete firefox

remove any trace of firefox from program files and anywhere else it might linger

install avg free

scan with avg

reinstall firefox

import bookmarks

That would hopefully fix it...then... reboot your flux capacitor

Just a quick note to let everyone know that jhoffman flat knows his stuff! I took his advice to solve this problem and it worked out just fine. Thank you very much. The folks here are just the best. :)
