Dr. Jim Norman, driver in the Napleton Racing #16 Porsche Cayman team that just
won class GX of the 2013 Rolex 24, has the funniest Rolex story you'll ever
hear! In his own words --

FUNNY STORY! ... Today I take my new Rolex to
the jeweler right down the street from my house in Tampa to get a link taken out
so it fits me better (for those of you who don't know, the winning drivers of
the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona are presented with a new Rolex timepiece in
Victory Lane).

The jeweler re-sizes it for me and charges me $8. I say
"Wow, 8 bucks, that's not very much". The manager lady says, "well, if it were a
REAL Rolex we would charge you more!". I chuckle and say "it IS a real Rolex".
She says, "Nope it is not...We know Rolex watches and this is definitely a
fake." My retort, "well, I guess you don't know these as well as you think!".
Hearing this, the Jeweler comes out from behind his little glass window from
where he is working on a frail, blue-haired lady's broach while wearing some
very dorky-looking magnifying glasses and says, "I'll bet you bought that watch
in New York". He puts both hands in his back pockets and sticks out his skinny
"bird" chest in an attempt to be strong and assertive. "Nope" I say, "I haven't
been to NYC in some time". He quickly replies, "I'll bet you $1000 you didn't
buy that from a real Rolex dealer". I say, I won't take that bet, because you
are right, I didn't buy this from a Rolex dealer". "AH HA!" he exclaims, "it IS
a fake!! Where did you get it??" "I got it in Daytona this past Sunday". "HA! I
am right!" he shouts, almost loud enough to break some of the crystal elephants
assembled as a group on one of the overhead glass shelves. "I know all the Rolex
dealers in Daytona, and none of them is open on Sundays!" He is quite pleased
with himself and turns to strut back to his window-enclosed, nick-knack
cluttered cubby. "Maybe I didn't get it from a dealer" I state smugly. He turns
and says, "well then tell me, who DID you get this FAKE Rolex from?" "Well, I
stated calmly and coolly, I was presented this beautiful timepiece from the
President and CEO of Rolex Watches while standing on the podium at the Rolex 24
Hours of Daytona". "OH, Sure!" he says, "and I'm Santa Claus!!".

And
back into his cubby he went, oblivious to the REAL world around him. He doesn't
get it... The world is passing him by and he isn't even aware that it is
happening. You gotta love life and embrace life... even if it means you have to
wear a fake Rolex.

I have several nicer watches.  I received as an engagement present (42 years ago) a gold Lucien Picard watch, I really liked the watch but since I didn't marry her the watch has just sat unworn.  I have a Rolex, nice piece but a bit clunky on my small wrist, never wear it.  Fell in love with a Rado I saw at a duty free shop in the islands, thought it was a great deal but I took a pass.  Several weeks later I was at a local jeweler where we shop quite a bit, saw the same watch cheaper and not duty free...........lol, bought it and I love it.  My favorite is a Timex with a 8 year battery, never needs service and the time is always perfect, now on my second battery, I bought it in 2000.  John Cameron Swayze, " It takes a lickin and keeps on tickin"

I watch that race every year. The winners get a special one of a kind Rolex. I believe there made of stainless, and a few other special things. So not surprising they have never seen one.

"Ladies and gentlemen, a good evening to you."  That's how Swayze began his newscast.

Here's a classic Timex commercial with JP Swayze.

By the way, the model of the Johnson outboard was the Javelin.

It's a stainless whiteface Daytona.  Without question the most difficult watch to get from the Rolex lineup.  I have a two-tone version with a bmop face.  Wear it almost every day.

I don't wear a watch on a day-to-day basis.  I just use the clock on my cell phone.  The only watch I own is a cheep green digital watch that I wear while running.  It's light, and tells time (my only two qualifications).  So, I'm obviously not a "watch guy".  But, out of curiosity, what is the advantage of the higher-end watches?  Do they keep more accurate times?  Are they lighter?  More comfortable?

Keeps better time, more aucurate, many are made sealed and corosion resistant for diving.....it depends on material and design whether they are lighter weight or not. Main cost for most are materials and then they are hand assmebled. I believe Tag Heuer is accurate to .001 of a second.

Timing like this matters for race cars and divers, but these days it is mostly a status thing.

As far as status, I figured that was why most people own/wear them.  But, the diving thing makes sense. If my life was depending on an exact amount of "air time" I would want to make sure it worked!

I always wanted a Rolex....to me it is jewelry and something that can be passed down to my son. Unfortunately I don't have one yet :)

IMO higher end watches are status and jewelry, I do not feel they keep significantly better time, I wore higher end watches for years.  Being retired and in shorts and a t shirt or casual shirt most of the time (acceptable dress in most Florida restaurants) my nicer watches get limited use now.  Every so often these watches need to be serviced and or cleaned, I've spent $100- $280, which is just no longer worth it to me.  My Timex goes bad I'll buy another for 30 bucks......

Watches get very expensive.  The number of complications can have a lot to do with the price and the mechanical tolerances are rediculous.  You get that accurate and its going to cost money.  Funny story though.
