Not much was biting today, but a slow and patient presentation of a 4" black senko created impressive results after 3 hours of fishing. Behold the grand pappy of all bass! See attached! Quote

If I tried a slow senko on my nearby lake it would slide on ice for a little while. That little "lunker" is better than nothing. Quote

We had a blast regardless of the fish biting, and the little bass was a nice bonus despite the size It was actually nice to finally catch one, after 4 or 5 times in a row getting skunked, so I'm not complaining, just thing it's funny because this was probably the smallest one I ever caught! I was surprised that it even bothered to attack a senko half it's size :-) in any case, it was a great day and regardless of the size, I'm happy I caught something from the bass family :-D Edit to add: my friend had a large one on the line btw, but it got off as he was bringing it in, so I know the fishing spot is good, and I can't wait to fish there again once the temperature and water levels improve! I fished a few days ago when we had warm weather and i couldnt catch a decent fish to save my life. But i did catch 6 just like the one you are holding. If you find your self on a dink pattern and dont mind, switch to the lightest rod you have. In my case is a 6'9 light action rod. Fish like that feel like a monster. Quote

I was fishing with a 6'6" Hurricane Redbone light action rod and 2500 size Shimano reel. This makes me wonder, should I take the 4000 reel off my 7' medium Redbone an slap a 2500 on it? I haven't yet caught a decent size fish on the setup I was using today, so I have no idea if it will be enough for a larger fish... Quote

I personally dont have a use for anything much bigger than a 2500, anything bigger and i use baitcast equipment. And yes and you correctly set the drag , they are fine for larger fish, just have to be more patient Quote

And yes and you correctly set the drag , they are fine for larger fish, just have to be more patient do you think 7' medium action rod will also be suitable for catching bass? my fear is that rod too hard with line too strong will unnecessarily cause fish harm. on the other hand i know 6'6" light action will bend more, but will i still be able to comfortably bring a 5lbs or 10lbs bass if i ever happen to catch one? btw, my largest bass ever, 5lbs, was caught on a short 4 guide walmart special for $16 :-) Quote

For bass fishing, much over a 2500 size reel is overkill. But that's my opinion. This from a guy who does all his bass spinning fishing on Shimano Stradic 1000FI reels. The 6 pounder in my avatar was caught on a 1000FI. Bait casting is another story. But I'll probably never use my Quantums again, I'll be going Daiwa Lexa from here on...for now. Quote

I have that same rod and similar sized reel and I use it for pond use. I also have the 7' med 8/17 redbone with a soron 20 on it, has handled jacks and snook that have easily topped the 10 pound mark. I don't often use that 7 footer in freshwater, it's just too much rod for bass. Simple motto, just let me hook it and I'll find a way to land it. Quote
aceofspades Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 I always keep an ultra lite setup with me. I grew up in Southern California, and it is my rainbow trout set up. It's a 5' rod with a small reel, I have 6 lbs test on it, and use it to fish with 4" flukes. It makes it fun on a slow day. I've caught a couple 5-6lbs bass on it, and also some big peacocks. It's great for fishing ponds that don't have a lot of vegetation, but have the steep drop off. Give it a try. Also, I just fished with a buddy and he had one of those counter top rod and reel combos that are about 2 feet long they sell at bass pro for $10. We were live shiner fishing for peacock bass with it. Maybe the most fun I've ever had fishing. Quote

I can't even imagine that thing jumping on anything bigger than that. LOL Quote
