Iv been thinking for a while now of getting into doing some photography mostly of nature. I have no clue of what I'd be doing kinda learn as I go. I also have no clue what a good camera would be to start with. I don't want to break the bank I know they can be rather expensive. I know I want it to be digital which like all cameras are these days and I want it to be able to take a bunch of really quick pictures I know some have a setting to snap a number of pictures each time. I want it to have a good zoom as well.

I spend alot of time in the woods and out doors so I see alot of cool things I always want pictures of. Yesterday while hunting I watched a redtail hawk grab a rabbit and eat it not 75 yards from me I tried the whole phone to my binos for a zoom but it came out crappy lol. I see things like this all the time plus with all my hunting I would probably tote the camera a well and snap shots of fox and coyotes in the distance prior to the other kinda shot.

I know there's a few guys here who are into it maybe some input from Fish Chris or J Francho

Clayton, just like fishing equipment can't make you a good fisherman, photo equipment can't make you (or anyone else) a good photographer. Almost any camera can take excellent pictures in the hands of a good photographer.

You need to decide what kinds of pictures you want to take. If it's wildlife, you'll need a long lens. If mostly scenery, a long lens isn't a requirement. There's a load of information on the Internet. You can do a search on such things as how to buy a camera or camera reviews or other things that you think will provide the information you want.

You can try your library for a Consumer Reports that has the article you want. You could try a rental at a rent-a-center.

I personally like to shoot wildlife and use one of the so-called superzooms. But this subject is pretty open-ended and I don't know what else to say, other than arming yourself with information will be a big help.

I shoot a wide variety of material as well as mentor students in photography. What I tell them is that for the most part when it comes to buying a camera, brand is a little part of it. Go see the cameras best buy has floor models, Walmart too. For the most part nikons/canons/etc are comparible in quality, features, and operation. Go see which one you like in your hand. Important thing to remember is that your cost is in lenses not necessarily the camera body. Also if any of your friends or family shoot on brand or another it is not a bad idea to try to purchases the same do you have someone who knows your brand and also might lend you gear. I will be more than willing to answer any questions you have but as stated above this is an immense subject to discuss without more details.

I'm mostly going to be taking wildlife shots and maybe sports as my boys get older. I was looking at best buy at the cannon EOS line up they seem like what I might be looking for. I didn't see anything about a "burst" mode but did see it on one of the nikons I looked at also.

Most modern DSLR will have burst modes as well as a sports setting. If shooting fast is a consideration look up the Contious shooting speed. Also make sure whatever you get shoots HD video. Might as well right?

I mostly just want clear pics not blurry. Its mostly for a hobby for my self so I don't need some thing crazy. Like I said I spend alot of time outdoors some times just to be like in the spring I go out in the woods an just watch what deer made it threw the winter and usually see some cool animals.

I picked up a Nikon 5100 this year on the advice of a professional, photographer friend. He said basically pick a price point and go see which Nikon or cannon in that range that feel good in your hand and get it.

I am still learning obviously but it is amazing the quality of shots I have gotten by basically being lucky :)

I did sign up at my local community college to take a 1 day class on all the basics and then I will probably sign up for a normal college level course to continue my learning.

My son is 2 1/2 and I want to be ready for his first day of t-ball in a few years :)

Then you should be fine with any entry level Canon or Nikon and they will more than likely have the ability to shoot HD video too.

Like fly fisher said pick a price point and go from there.

Kit with body, lens or two, battery and sometimes a bag will set you back 600.00 - 700.00. Check out eBay and amazon once you have an idea of the body you want. Pretty good kits on those sites.

How far can they zoom what kind of lense would be needed to take a picture of say a coyote mocking me at 600+ yards howling just out of range my rifle(for now). I want to be able to capture some of them shots of them or any other animal I cant get close to.

At that distance it is going to be difficult to get a picture with whatever you buy.

To give you a reference point; to fill a frame, that is to have your object fill the majority of the area of the picture. An object at 100 yds with a 300mm lens would have to be 23 feet give or take.

Wow I didn't think it would be that hard I guess idk I can see em fine at that distance with my naked eye and even my cheap binos I didn't think it would be difficult to get a picture with a camera at that range.
