hmongkidBee Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 hey guys what's your favorite jig skirts? How is that living rubber material because I use silicone, but want to change to something else. I hear hair jigs are nice also. So looking to get an idea of what you guys use. Quote
ib_of_the_damned Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 Seeing as how I just stuck my second jig fish ever tonight, I can safely say that I like to use the regular silicone skirts. From what I have heard and read, they hold up better over time, living rubber gets dried out and cracks(almost like old rubber bands). As for types of skirts, I prefer the "hole in one" type of skirts. The colors dont mix and stay put, I hate getting jigs that have all the strands on one side and you have to even them out and make sure that the color pattern looks right. Just my two cents... Quote
backwater4 Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 Living rubber has more of a flair to it than silicone, but silicone skirts have much wider choice colors. I use both and really never had a problem with them drying out. I prefer the silicone. Hair jigs are a totally different jig, I use hair jigs in colder water where there is not much heavy cover, They are not designed to pitch and flip like the other jigs are. Just my .02. Quote
mhamlin Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 Fortunately living rubber really doesn't dry out much anymore...at least I haven't found it to yet. Personally, I throw a jig with living rubber because of the bulky profile it creates. The only time I will throw a silicon jig is if i'm really trying to put an emphasis on a more natural presentation. (Clear water, or maybe post frontal.) Really though, it would be in your best interest to have a few of each and learn what works in each situation on your body of water. Here is an example of the living rubber jig I throw... I've standardized mostly on an arky style head because I feel it comes through 80 percent of cover just find. (Ignore the beat up paint job, shes dinged a few boat docks : ) Quote
mhamlin Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 Oops...probably need a link to the picture... http://s946.photobucket.com/albums/ad310/HAMLINSCUSTOMTACKL/?action=view¤t=DSCF0229.jpg&newest=1 Quote
tbird Posted March 28, 2010 Posted March 28, 2010 Mostly round rubber for me as mentioned earlier it flairs quite a bit more than silicone ...I like these skirts on Football and Arkie jig heads. T Quote
hmongkidBee Posted March 28, 2010 Author Posted March 28, 2010 okay thanks guys. Yea I've been using silicone skirted jigs only. I think it's safe to try out the living rubber ones as well. Thanks for the info guys. Quote
fishinflip415 Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 My favorite skirt material is whatever the fish are biting that day. There is times where the prefer silicone and times when living rubber is the way to go. Quote
KC Bass Fanatic Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 I tie my own jigs and I use living rubber combined with silicone. You get the best of both worlds. I am really liking Skirts Unlimited Tarantula rubber these days as well. It is flat rubber and really has a ton of "life". I get all my skirts from Skirts Unlimited. fishingskirts.com Quote
