Hey guys, i just got off the phone with my Dad who lives in Roanoke Va. He just found out that he has prostate cancer. The doctors say that it is in the very early stages and that the cancerous spot is very small. The docs are confident that they can treat it. My dad didnt seem as confident as the doctors. My dad is 65 and has always had good health so this is a bit of a shock. Just send some prayers our way. Thanks guys.

Prayers sent, Brother. Early stage prostate cancer is very very treatable. Try to get him out of his funk as best you can because the difference between an optimistic and pessimistic attitude while fighting cancer can truly affect the outcome.

I'm so sorry to hear that Teal, my thoughts and prayers to you and your family.

 

My sister has just recently finished her radiation treatments for breast cancer and she was in a bit more advanced stage with it. Keep strong for your dad and your family and he will come thru this as my sister did. A bunch of folks here had been, and still are, very supportive to me during my sisters ordeal and I can not thank them enough. I'm sure you'll find out the same.

I understand how you feel, my Mother just finished Chemo and is starting radiation for stage 4 breast cancer.

Your Father will be ok, he's very lucky they caught it in the early stages, that makes a huge difference.

As far as his confidence level goes, this is a hard thing for anyone to process. Thats exactly why you have to pull together as a family and stay positive for him, this is the time when he needs you the most. My prayers are with you and your family Teal.

Absolutely!!! Being in Roanoke, there should be some quality Muskie water not too far away or perhaps a perch/crappie hole that could take his mind off his concerns. Get him on the water often!!!

Survival rates for prostate cancer

Survival rates are often used by doctors as a standard way of discussing a person's prognosis (outlook). Some patients with cancer may want to know the survival statistics for people in similar situations, while others may not find the numbers helpful, or may even not want to know them. If you would rather not read the survival rates, skip to the next section.

The 5-year survival rate refers to the percentage of patients who live at least 5 years after their cancer is diagnosed. Of course, many of these people live much longer than 5 years (and many are cured).

Five-year relative survival rates, such as the numbers below, assume that some people will die of other causes and compare the observed survival with that expected for people without the cancer. This is a better way to see the impact of the cancer on survival.

According to the most recent data, when including all men with prostate cancer:

• The relative 5-year survival rate is nearly 100%
• The relative 10-year survival rate is 98%
• The 15-year relative survival rate is 93%

Keep in mind that 5-year survival rates are based on patients diagnosed and first treated more than 5 years ago, and 10-year survival rates are based on patients diagnosed more than 10 years ago. Modern methods of detection and treatment mean that many prostate cancers are now found earlier and can be treated more effectively. If you are diagnosed this year, your outlook may be better than the numbers reported above.

My dad had the same cancer a little over a year ago, he is a liitle bit older than your dad. Dr's caught it very early, and he opted to remove his prostate to be on the safe side. Thank goodness the cancer was contained and the procedure was a success. There are several options to deal with prostate cancer. Survival rate is very very high as someone posted earlier. Although the survival rate is high. You tell anyone they have cancer and they fear the worst, which is understandable. Talk to him, taking him fishing and get his mind off it. My thoughts are with you and your dad.
