I've resently received a 150$ giftcard to basspro, so the lews reel i was looking at is out of the question because they dont sell it there. I'm planning on getting a chronarch at bass pro and ordering a powell endurance. Now i don't have a ton of money(highschool student) and can only get one other pole so i i need this setup to function for a variety of uses.I already have a crankbait setup, spinning setup for lighter uses, and then a bunch of other mediocre combos for fishing with bait. So this will be used for jigs, frogs, topwater,spinninerbaits,... Etc.

So what do you think for gear ratios and power of the rod??

Easy.. 7'0 MH fast rod, 6.3:1 reel. That is your all purpose , fish anything set up.

agreed w/ MH power and 6:3 reel ratio but i'd up the rod to 7'6" b/c i'm guessing ur shore bound? you can cover more water with less effort with that extra 6".  if you fish from the deck of ur dad's 20ft nitro, get what you want

I fish out of yak, jon boat and shore too.  I find a 7ft rod too long for shore fishing.  Maybe if you only fish a open bank but not for in amongst trees brush or about bridges and such.  If you fish crankbaits and topwaters, a med hvy might be to stiff for your liking so think hard about your decision.

if you know for sure your going with a powell I would bump up to a heavy.1/4 to 1oz 4 power is what the non flipping powells will run out in a heavy.I recommend a heavy for your jigs and frogs.i feel the 4 power powell will be more versatile but this is just my opinion.the 714 endurance is one of my favourite worm and jig rods great tip with plenty of backbone. I also use the max 703cef for t-rigs and lighter jigs in more open water and it works great.I honestly don't think you can go wrong with mh or heavy in the powell line but for versatility the heavy is better in my opinion.

I just went through the same ordeal.  I needed an all around setup and settled very close to what has been suggested above.  Not to take this thread off course but since we're talking multipurpose, what would the line selection be?  Braid/mono/fluoro(?) weight(?) leader/no leader? (for braid).  Not looking to make a debate or jack the thread, but curious to know what the consensus may be on the ideal multipurpose line to go with the rod/reel.

I use 12# yozuri hybrid on my baitcaster and it works well for everything , also some people use braid with an appropriate leader attached depending on the situation.

If this is your first casting reel, get some cheap mono and learn to cast. Then, I would recommend 12# Yo Zuri Hybrid. Its a very managable line that has good strength and sensitivity. Its not FC or braid, but you also don't run into some of the problems you might experience with the other types of line. From there, I would try braid, FC, etc. etc. and find out what you like most.

braid with leader all the way.  braid doesn't backlash as easy...and its easy to pick out if you do...and its super sensitive when detecting bites.  using a mono or hybrid leader makes for good knot strength.  (fluoro is touchy. heavy fluoro (12-15lb+) ties much easier.  this also allows you to use the rod for multi multi purposes. ie use 30lb braid backing with a 15lb leader when around heavy cover.   tie on a 10-12lb leader if you hit open water or if the fish are spooky).

quick story:  i spooled my first bc with mono.  and quickly bought 4 more which i put braid+mono leader.  i had to cut the mono out on a backlash and could easily pick out the braid. but the kicker came one time when i was fishing at night.  i hooked into what i thought was a monster bass.  but when i got her to the dock she was a small' 16" catfish that put up a good fight.   i couldn't figure out why i badly misinterpreted the catch and was analyzing it the next day.  i pulled the rod out of my truck to go over everything in my head and saw it was the reel with mono on it.  in other words mono is like fight fish on a rubber band.   there is NOTHING wrong with doing it. but if there is that much stretch during a fight, that energy/stretching is there during a hook set AND its definitely there absorbing sensitive BITES. once you go braid or fluro or hybrid you'll never go back.  (a short 6-8ft mono leader doesn't manipulate the braid system).

i'd go with:

1-30lb braid.  tie straight braid when ur in muddy water or using jigs/frogs around lily pads.  (obviously a heavy frog rod w/ 65lb braid is ideal if ur going deep into the slop. but you can venture to the edge of the sloppness' universe).

2-30lb braid to 15lb leader in muddy water, large bodies of water w/ unstable water, or pitching jigs around timber/docks/rocks that can break you off

3-30lb braid to 10 or 12lb leader in clear water, open water, or small ponds with stable environments.

thats alot of uses out of one rod!

I have used my Veritas 7'3" MH as my all around set up, I have paired it with my CiticaG6.  I fish from a canoe and shore, with this setup I can throw pretty much anything with it.  So I'd agree with everyone's assessment for a 7' MH.

Thats an awesome question i was wondering the same. I think I'm going with 14 mono, not sure yet though

I put on 15lb braid on mine and would add a leader with flouro or PLine if the situation required something more subtle.

As others have said 7 foot medium heavy is a good all purpose combo. Probably a little light for frogs and big jigs and a little heavy for crankbaits so if you all ready have some rods for this you may want to go with something a little more lure specific.
