shihan02 Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 What are the best trailers to use on swim jigs? Quote
Hanover_Yakker Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 That's a loaded question. You're about to get all sorts of responses, but it might help us better if you identified specifically the type of water you are fishing, target species, current jig colors you use and their sizes and what equipment you are using. Colors vary by water clarity and forage species for the predatory fish you are seeking in some areas. Trailer action/noise output varies by water clarity and general spookiness of the predator being targeted. I'll go out on a limb here and throw in a couple choices for you..... GY twin curly tail grubs, plastic paddle tail grubs or small swimbaits, small split tail spinnerbait/chatterbait trailers, flat tailed grubs or even small finesse worms and last but ceratinly not least would be a fluke/jerkshad rigged either normally or reversed with the flat back facing down (helps with slowing the fall rate). Super User roadwarrior Posted January 30, 2013 Super User Posted January 30, 2013 My best producer is the Rage Tail Single Tail Grub. My new absolute favorite is the Menace. Other suggestions include the GYCB Swimming Senko (back half), LFT Live Magic Shad and Keitech Swing Swim Impact Fat. A new entry in this category is the MegaStrike Fat Shad. http://www.megastrikefishingproducts.com/shop/fat-shad-soft-plastic/ Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted January 30, 2013 Super User Posted January 30, 2013 My favorite and most productive trailer on swim jigs has always been a single tail grub, followed by, in a distant second place, a paddle tail swimbait, and lastly a flapping claw craw type bait. The baits of each type I like best are the SK Rage tail grub, the Netbait BK swimmer, and a Netbait Paca craw on standard size swim jigs. When I need to down size my swim jigs/trailer, I go to a 3" GYCB single tail grub. An often over looked swim jig trailer, especialy in clear water on spooky bass, is a fluke/soft jerkbait. Quote
JigMe Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 There isn't a "best" trailer for Swim jigs, but my favorite has been Zoom grubs. I have them in different colors, but I have loaded up on Rage Tails grubs this year. Rage Tails always make good product, so I have confident on them. Quote
Shane Mccormick Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 I like a yum woolie bullie or a fat albert grub.. Quote
SausageFingers Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 My most productive last year was a Reaction Innovations Kinky Beaver. I pinch the middle two appendages off. The Rage line also produced for me. Quote
mnbassman23 Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 As mentioned already single and twin tailed grubs, 4-5inch soft swimbaits, and craw baits are all good. Neither is best (imo) and certain ones will work better on different days. If you limit yourself to one or the other you are only limiting the amount of fish you catch. Brand wise i'd use whatever you have confidence in. If you don't have a favorite brand or company the ones listed above by other members are all good and will fulfill your needs! Quote
MN_SONNEN_ANGLER Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 I personally prefer a GY twin or single tail grub! Quote
5 Dollar Fishing Game Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 I have taken a bag of cheaper plastic worms from Walmart and cut them in half and used them as jig trailers. It worked fantastic! I just thought of it in the boat one day and tried it. That's the beauty of bass fishing, we get creative. :-) Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted January 30, 2013 Super User Posted January 30, 2013 The majority of the swim jig fishing is done on northern style swim jigs in the 3/16-5/16 range and I almost always use a 5in GY single tail grub or Kalin's 5in grub. Quote
Super User rockchalk06 Posted January 30, 2013 Super User Posted January 30, 2013 I love using tubes. I have a ton of them on hand as I fish alot of tubes. They are kind of a pain to keep attached, but I take a black senko type worm and cut it into 1/2" pieces. Lube the cut up senko (one piece) with some attractant and slide it in. Then run your tube like any other trailer. Sticks really good and lasts about as long as your standard trailer. The action with a North Star Flip n Swim and the tail of the tube is killer. My favorite is a Mistake colored Flip n Swim with a black with red flake tube. Its like crack to a bass in these waters. 2 Quote
xxjace Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 Zoom fat Albert grub works well..I'm a big rage tail fan and I've never used there grubs before.but ive heard good things..I'm gonna try some this year. Quote
Super User Shane J Posted January 30, 2013 Super User Posted January 30, 2013 Rage Grub, Rage Menace (twin tail), and most action would be Baby Craw, Chunk, or Craw. I use the Baby Craw the most. Love swim jigs!! Single handedly took the spinnerbait out of rotation for me. Quote
RyneB Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 rage tail menace for me. Either that or a single tail grub Quote
MrSwimJig Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 I prefer Kinami 4 inch single tail grubs. I also will use a Swim Senko tail section rigged upside down and have been trying the Rage Tail Single Tail Grubs. Occasionally will use a dual tail grub but not very often. Quote
shihan02 Posted January 31, 2013 Author Posted January 31, 2013 I mostly fish small clear northern lakes and reservoirs for both smallmouths and largemouths. Quote
BassMaster#1 Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 Single and twin tail grubs are good, but I like craw baits for trailers. Rage craws, grande mega claws and chigger craws. Try these and I'm sure you will narrow it down. Good luck Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 I like swimbaits as my swim jig trailers. I've used a variety of different brands but my favorite is Keitech. Their Swing Impact Fat swimbait is fantastic IMHO. They have a nice selection of sizes and colors, I'm sure you could find some to your liking. They just flat catch fish for me. If they were a little easier to come by and a bit cheaper I'd only use these for all my swim jigs. The nearest tackle shop to me that carries them is about 45 minutes away so its not to far but no exactly "convenient" either. I think they sell for $7.99 a pack there and there's 5 to a pack, best I can remember. They do tear easily so they're not the most cost effective bait but they work, no question about it. Quote
Lip 'em! Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 I prefer bulky single tail grubs on mine. Ive thrown swim baits on swim jigs some, but just cant seem to get the action out of them i am looking for and had trouble with them not wanting to swim straight. Quote
Jig Meister Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 I really only use single tail or double tail grubs from Zoom, the fat alberts. Sometimes I will use cut ribbon tails worms, or other creature baits if they are past their life span. Quote
bassh8er Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 A bluegill color Yum 3.5" Money Minnow is my favorite trailer. It looked awesome on a KVD bluegill colored swim jig, but now my jig if choice for swim jigs is Northstar. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted February 1, 2013 Super User Posted February 1, 2013 I use the same trailers that I fish on the bottom. Quote
Big-O Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 I prefer bulky single tail grubs on mine. Ive thrown swim baits on swim jigs some, but just cant seem to get the action out of them i am looking for and had trouble with them not wanting to swim straight. Here's a short clip and it shows both action and rigging footage on the single tail grub, hope it helps! http://youtu.be/9zFIHToj_aQ 1 Quote
