War Eagle 44 Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 I have both a Calcutta TE DC and a Calais DC (both 201's) and I love to fish with them. I use the Calcutta the most, I usually have it on a 845 CB Loomis or a 7'7" M Cumara reaction rod. I primarily throw cranks, square bills to 6XD's, scrounger heads, traps, Sammy's, under spins, and the occasional spinnerbait. I'll spool it with anywhere from 10-15 # CXX. The Calais I use for jigs, t-rigs, buzzbaits, weightless flukes, Senko's, Cane Toads basically an all around type reel. I usually have it on a 7' mh worm & jig type rod. Mostly fish 15# CXX on this reel. I love to fish with mine and I'm sure most of you do as well so I was just curious what you guys were throwing with yours. Thank fellas. Quote
BassinB Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 I have a Calcutta TE 400 on my 8' XH magnum bulldog musky rod and love it. Cranks big bucktails and jerkbaits well plus it has strong drag and is built like a tank. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 Wow - this is too weird. I just got home from fishing mine for the first time today. It's a Calcutta 100DC. Nice reel. My primary use will be 1/2 and 5/8oz. lipless cranks - mostly when fishing from the bank. Just trying to get all the distance I can to get where the fish are. I probably won't fish it from the boat much where casting distance isn't as critical (and where dropping it overboard would be REALLY bad ). I will play with rods a bit before deciding on power and length. I fished it today on a 7' medium cranking rod, will fish it next on a 7 1/2' medium cranking rod. Only fly in the ointment is that the IPT is a little slower than I would prefer for lipless cranks. On casting distance, I have it on the lightest braking setting, with zero spool tension, and was getting out there fairly well. BUT, I'm not sure that I'm getting a whole lot more distance than I get with my standard CTE100GT. Will have to play with it more. All this is with 10lb test line. The whine is kinda cool.... Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 I have the calcutta te dc 100 & the calais dc 200. I like the calais much better. For me it is a better caster. South FLA & I were out frog fishing. I just got a new 2013 legend extreme MHM in 7'8" to replace last years model which broke on a hook set. Robert casted 5 or 6 times trying different settings & pronounced he thought he could spool it. I said no way. It was filled with 50lb braid and had a 1/2 oz spro popping frog tied on. He gave it a heave and the spool went empty down to the spool knot. That impressed me even though I know he is an excellent caster. Great reels for sure. Quote
baluga Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 I use my Calcutta 100 DC with Phenix UMBX 66M for casting 3" big hammer swimbait on 1/4 lead head and 1/2-5/8oz jerkbait like LC FM110 or RC STIX 110. Yeah, love that whining sound. Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted January 30, 2013 Super User Posted January 30, 2013 DC? Does that mean digital cast control? Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted January 30, 2013 Super User Posted January 30, 2013 Hey Boats - that's what it means. Shimano - Calais and Calcutta DCs in the US. Then there are several JDM DC models as well - Conquest, Antares, Scorpion, Metanium, Cardiff, others? Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted January 30, 2013 Super User Posted January 30, 2013 Does anyone have experience with the Scorpion DC? I don't need one. But a lil monkey tells me I do. He also said it would look sweet on a new Cumara. Quote

He also said it would look sweet on a new Cumara. I've played around with one in the tackle store but I've not fished with one. I LOVE my Citica E's so if these weren't $400 I'd surely pick one up. Yes they would look fantastic on a new Cumara A. Quote
jeb2 Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 I have the calcutta te dc 100 & the calais dc 200. I like the calais much better. For me it is a better caster. I agree. My Calcutta DC is the 250, and is a good reel, too. Work of art asthetically. But the Calais DC has more adjustability, higher gear ratio and lower profile. It gets used a LOT more than my Calcutta DC, which is pretty much a dedicated deep cranking reel for me on a Loomis crankbait rod. The Calais DC sits on an NRX853 and I use it for pretty much everything. Jigs, t-rigs, spinnerbaits, spoons, jerkbaits, etc. We fish a lot of clear, heavily pressured water so casting distance can be important. Quote
Maico1 Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 I agree there is more adjustability with Calais however I think they all have a place, at least in my arsenal.....If comparing the Calcutta100DC to Conquest 100 DC I would recommend the Calcutta you will get more distance out of it. I use both for followup TopWater setups to my Calais 200DC so that means something to me. Otherwise I enjoy them all...... Super User Hooligan Posted January 30, 2013 Super User Posted January 30, 2013 I use mine primarily as moving bait reels, but also fish them with big jigs, and plastics. Little of this, little of that... My favourite combo with a DC is my 200 on Cumara 6-9 MHXfast spinnerbait. That's sort of my moneymaker. Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted January 31, 2013 Author Posted January 31, 2013 Great responses guys, keep it up. Quote

I would love to see a reel spooled. If you guys can, tey to re-create it sometime. Please post the video, I think distance casting is pretty cool stuff! Quote
War Eagle 44 Posted February 1, 2013 Author Posted February 1, 2013 I know this really doesn't count since Larry Dahlberg is sponsored by Shimano but he used to have a commercial during his show where he spooled a Calais DC on a cast. I've never purposely tried to do this with mine but I just might have to give it a shot now just to see if I can do it. Quote
Super User Gone_Phishin Posted February 1, 2013 Super User Posted February 1, 2013 I have a Calcutta 201DC on a St. Croix LEC70MHF, and it is the best reel I have ever used for 1/2oz spinnerbaits. I plan on purchasing a Megabass X4 Destruction this year, and moving the Calcutta 201DC to this stick. When I have the cash I plan on purchasing the Calais 201DC, and using that on the Legend Elite. One thing that I need to mention, is the DC reels are really fantastic for people with any sort of physical disability. My spine is junk, and the DC unit really aides me in making long casts without killing my body. I do most of my fishing off of our dock, and I simply cannot repetitively heave lures and cover water like I was once able to. The 201DC has been a huge help here, and I am able to cover a lot of water. They are expensive as heck, but invaluable as far as I'm concerned....plus they help with the occasional backlash if I've had one too many beverages. Lol. Quote
Super User Gone_Phishin Posted February 1, 2013 Super User Posted February 1, 2013 Rather than combining this with my last post, I believe it merits it's own: SHIMANO, BUILD A CALCUTTA 101DC! Quote
