born2fish94 Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Does anyone have any feedback they can give me on the st.croix rage rods? i recently fished a tournament with a guy who used nothing but them and swears by them, i fished with one for a little bit and it felt great. I am asking because i 2 all star rods break on me just from setting the hook so i wanna try a different brand. Any feed back would be awesome Quote
bmlum415 Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Wrong section for this? Also I haven't used a rage but I have a mojo and an avid rod and I like the avid but hate the mojo so the rage is in between, may I ask which all stars you have broken, I have had one for 5 years and it hasn't given me issues at all. For the price of a rage maybe try the dobyns savvy series, I prefer dobyns over any other rod and I have used a savvy before and IMO its the best in its price range, theres also the phenix m1 and recon 2 rods for a bit more cash or a kistler klx too,you don't have to listen to me but this is my opinion. tbone1993 Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 In the same price range I would get a dobyns saavy but if you have a deal on a rage then get it. Quote
Super User Hi Salenity Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 If you liked them go for it. I have several. I like the legend tournament more but then I like the extremes more than the tournaments... What do you want to spend? Check the guides about half of the older rage rods had crooked guides... Not that it hurts anything but for $150 Quote
Christian M Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 I own a 7'1" MH Rage Rod (casting) and I absolutely love it. When I leave the boat at home & go fishing from the banks this is one of the two rods I carry. I've used it to fish Senkos, Jigs, Spinnerbaits, Rattletraps, & Cranks. I really enjoy fishing weightless 5" senkos and 1/4 oz Bitsy Bug jigs with it mainly because of its extreme sensitivity. At first I was a little skeptical about the durability of the foam handle wrapped in neoprene, but its definitely proven itself. During late fall of 2011 I caught my PB (6.5) using my Rage Rod. I plan on buying a couple more this season. IMHO, well worth the $160! Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 I picked up 2 rage rods and am waiting on my third from the free deal St. Croix was running in december. Here is a review i wrote up. http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/111275-st-croix-rage-rod-review/?hl=rage#entry1212500 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 29, 2013 Global Moderator Posted January 29, 2013 I had 2 rage rods, broke the 7' 1" MH/F casting rod swinging a 2.5lb fish into the boat. Also had a 6' 10" ML/F spinning rod but the reel seat broke loose from the rod and started to spin around the rod when I was using the rod. Personally, I'd spend 30 dollars more and get an Avid unless you can get a really good deal on a Rage. I've gone to pretty much all LTB except for a couple Mojos and an Avid and love all of them. Super User ww2farmer Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 I love St Croix rods, but I just got my first Rage and the waters still hard around here, it will be a little while before I use it. I got the 7'1" MH/F casting, and my first impressions of it just by fondling it in the house are: #1 Has a little softer tip than both my other comparable 7' MH/F St Croix rods (Avid and LTB). Which is good............for me........this will be my new frog rod, and I like having a rod where the tip loads up for casting frogs. #2 Man those guide are small.......not having any previous expierance with micro guides IDK if they are bigger or smaller than most, but they are small to me. Good thing this will be a frog rod and loaded with 50lb braid with no leader knot to pass through them. #3 The handle and reel seat, not what I am used to, but thats not a negative, it's not what I am used to. The handle is a little skinny #4 Balances pretty good with the Citica 201E I plan on using with it. #5 my only grip so far............the hook hanger, it's the older , traditional type. I really ike the style they use on the Mojo, and LTB, IDK why they used this kind on the rage. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 I too have the 7'1" MH/F action rod. I have yet to experience any of these horror stories you hear about guides, and reel seats. I actually use mine for pitching....which is a bit on the short side of standards these days but it works well for me so I stick with it. If I end up getting a longer pitching rod, I'll use this one for swim jigs exclusively. Quote
0119 Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Has anyone heard how the weird grip material is holding up to hooks and bumping around in the boat? Every time I toy with one at the store the grip causes me not to buy it. It looks like it would cut easy or dent to shape if it was laid against another object. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 It's neoprene, so it actually grips better if wet. It takes a bit to get used to, especially if you only use cork but I like it. I find it quite comfortable. I haven't had any wear or tear on mine yet, not to say it can't happen. Quote
thehooligan Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 I thought they were heavy and didnt like the guides, id also go avid if i was considering a st croix.... Quote

Every time I toy with one at the store the grip causes me not to buy it. It looks like it would cut easy or dent to shape if it was laid against another object. If Im not mistaken, inside of the grip is EVA Foam (which is supposed to be really strong) wrapped in Neoprene. I've been using mine consistantly for over 2 years and I haven't had ANY problems with the handle. I actually prefer the neoprene wrap to traditional cork. it grips like rubber when its wet, and the neoprene is manufactured hard enough so that hooks don't penetrate it. The polished steel guides are very small, but from what I've read & experienced, they are designed to give you more casting distance. The smaller diameter guides reduce the amount of loop as the line leaves the reel. Hey thehooligan, is that lake Audrey you're on?? Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 The big advatage to the rage series is you get he same blank as the avid for about 50 less and it balances better (to me) with my gear as opposed to the mojo series which had a tip heavy feel. Quote
BassinB Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 I have a steep discount with St.. Croix through a sponsorship and i have fished 3 of the rage rods for a year or so. I will say that they are good rods at MY price point. I probably wouldnt't be fishing them without the discount however. Its a team sponsorship so I don't feel too bad giving my honest opinion. When i buy rods at full price they are Dobyns... 1 Quote

born2fish94 Posted January 30, 2013 Author Posted January 30, 2013 thanks for all the help guys, the all star that broke on my was the new micro series. i set the hook on a big spot on the coosa river and it cracked at the rod handle, when you shake the rod you can hear it crackling and popping. and from what i can tell i hear both good and bad things about the Rage rod. but that kinda comes with every rod. i plan on trying it and seeing how it works for me and if i dont fall in love with it in the thirty days ill take it back. and i've heard so much about dobyns rods. but have yet to try it. is it hype? or are the really that good? because honestly im looking for a brand that i fall in love with then just stock up on em. thats how i have always been. Super User WRB Posted January 30, 2013 Super User Posted January 30, 2013 Looking at a few independent reports like tackle T 2011 ICAST report, the Rage gets good reviews. Been on the market for over a year, looks like good md price range work horse rod. Components are mid range, 5 year limited warranty, $150-$170 range depending on rod length and strength. Big O uses them, must be tough rods! Tom Quote

Super User LgMouthGambler Posted January 31, 2013 Super User Posted January 31, 2013 Just read the TT review on the Rage. Why would you design the reel seat like that? Not a fan of the large exposed threads. Nice rod, but that ruins it. Quote
