BassinB Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Before every season while I'm restocking my tackle collection, I set some goals for myself. One being the techniques I am going to improve on this season. Last year I really focused on pitching jigs and punching heavy cover, as well as shakey heads. This year I am focusing on crankbaits and drop shotting. Anybody else take this approach to their fishing? Quote
TrapperJ Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Yup! Drop shotting is on my list! Also I hate to admit it and call myself a bass fisherman... But...the the other thing on my list is learn to fish a spinnerbait more, and better. I hardly ever use one So those are on my list this year. 1 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 Spinnerbaits are my focus this year. Quote
bassguytom Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 I'm going to try to flip and pitch a jig in pads more. I really need to learn how to do that. I really just started fishing a jig last year and it's a blast feeling them suck it in and setting the hook. Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 I am so rusty from not being able to fish I think the whole spectrum is something I need to focus on this year, I am not looking forward to all of the work but at the same time I am excited to get back after it again. I hope whatever any one needs to work on brings great success to all of you and that this season is your best season ever !! Good luck and be safe !!! 1 Quote

Topwaterspook Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Catching bass on jigs and building confidence in that tactic. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 Not really. There are things I'd LIKE to become proficient at (cranks, spinnerbaits, etc.) but because i want to maximize my time on the water by catching, not just fishing, I tend to stick with my standards. Soft plastics. If I were fishing tourneys, I'd definitely spend more time on becoming more "rounded" in techniques. 1 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 I try and pick a technique each year to be better at too. This year i am focusing on jigs, deep water structure & crankbaits I am so rusty from not being able to fish I think the whole spectrum is something I need to focus on this year, I am not looking forward to all of the work but at the same time I am excited to get back after it again. Sundance Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 this year im going to fish more soft plastics and try to build convidence with them and spinnerbaits. Quote
Christian M Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Nitrofreak- thanks for the encouragement! This is the first winter that I've actually taken time to practice flipping/pitching in my backyard. Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 This is the year I reaquaint myself to jerkbaits. I really haven't used them in a long time and I remember doing well with them in the past. I just don't know why I abandoned them. Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 Nitrofreak- thanks for the encouragement! Get out there and go get em !! Come back here and show them off when you do, I can't wait to see what you all can do this season !! Quote
Clash City Rocker Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Another for spinnerbaits this year! I've just never been patient with them for some reason. I'll have to leave my cranks, jigs and plastics at home! Quote
BlackMagic82 Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 I've thrown a jig all fall and winter, almost exclusively (I'd say 85% of my casts) and it has done wonders for my ability to fish with one. I'm not really going to focus on one rig or another during spring and summer, instead I'm going to try and hone in on my ability to fish the conditions that I am presented with better. Quote
Super User Shane J Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 For me, it's gonna be learning the new electronics. Lot's to learn on a pair of HDS 10's. Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 #1 on the list is the drop shot. #2 is jigs (flipping & football) 1 Quote
Rangerphil Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 I am no pro by any means but one tip I can give about using spinnerbaits is to work them! What I mean by that is don't get into the habit of just throwing them out and reeling them back in. Try to incorporate some pauses, jerks, twitches and such. Work them through cover not just around. Get into a habit of killing it at the boat before you lift it in, it is alot more work doing all of this but I promise it pays off with fish you may have never caught otherwise. Also, don't forget a trailer hook! Hope this helps! Quote
Jell0b0y Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 I am going to work on spinnerbaits and jerk baits this spring. The summer will bring ledge fishing with deep diving crank baits. I have never had the patients and always went back to beating the banks but this year I am really going to push myself to stay out there. I may leave all my cranks at the house except for the deep divers to keep me from doing that. Quote

JigMe Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 I am putting down my stick baits this year, and fish more crankbaits & swim jigs. Quote
