dhami013 Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 It's been way too long since I've been on this website, coming back to it tonight, while I'm in one of my night classes, I'm glad I did. As it is currently winter I know we're all looking forward to that spring bite. I am one of those people. I've been curious about and have looked into swim bait fishing. I know one other member on here, a close friend of mine, has been too. We've looked at all sorts of videos about fishing them, tail types, and all sorts of other things. But I want to know if there are some other swim bait enthusiasts in the central to southern VA area that have some preferences. What has worked for you? What conditions do you use them for? Favorite brands, techniques, so and so forth. Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 Well, well, well, it's about time !!! LOL !!! You been doing any better than the last time we spoke? It is really good to see you posting again !!!! As far as swim baits go, it depends on where I am fishing, I like a large profile and a breatheable skirt type of jig, 1/2 to 1oz, I also like to attach a fluke in Salt and Pepper color. Other swim jigs anything less than 1/2oz I like curl tail grubs, I will swim these around most of the grassy areas, in and through it and around the outside of it. One thing I am always doing is making sure my swim jigs stay in contact with what ever I am fishing, if it's a rocky shore line, it's bouncing off the rocks etc... Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 dhami, if you mean "swimbaits" like hard, soft and hollow body there are lots of YouTube productions showing you how to fish them. Just remember that if you do throw them the fishing is slow. However, the big ones love the swimbaits. Quote
dhami013 Posted January 30, 2013 Author Posted January 30, 2013 I've been doing well. Getting ready to graduate with a BA in English Literature. Hopefully looking into grad. school to teach English in high school. I haven't dabbled much with swim jigs. Mostly messed around here and there with swim baits like the ones Sam mentioned. I've seen tons of videos I was just curious as to what preferences some Virginia anglers might have for certain areas around here. Just kind of an open question to start a little something. Sonny, hope you've been doing well man. Fishing4SquidDuck or Bill as I call him will be moving down to Norfolk to live with me as he's transferring to ODU in the fall. I'm hoping we can hit the local tournament series around here. I fished it often my sophomore year, not too much junior year, and none this year. Most people have been rather reluctant to let non-boaters aboard. I guess in fear to share their favorite spots. I would go out on my own boat but I spent money on other things rather than a new engine for my jonboat and only have 55 and a 35lb thrust trolling motors, the lake is a little big to compete with that. But I can still go out on it. So we shall see. Thanks for the replies gents, you been out lately Sonny? Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 30, 2013 Super User Posted January 30, 2013 With an English degree have you given any thought to law school? And if you attain your Ph.D. (piled higher and deeper) you can teach on the college level. Wonderful reading that you will graduate and head to grad school. That masters degree will help you secure your future in teaching if you don't go into law. What about joining a local BASS Federation club in your area? Nonboaters are usually welcome by most clubs if they have the room and you can fish many bodies of water. Good luck and congrats on your degree. Remember to pay a lot of F.I.C.A. when you start your career!!! Quote
dhami013 Posted January 30, 2013 Author Posted January 30, 2013 I've thought about looking into BASS Federation but being a college student, I'm skeptical of those things called "dues." Ha. The local tournament series here on a lake about 15 mins away is almost always an open tournament so I go to those. Law school- eek, scary, difficult, and scary. I don't know about all that. Teaching has been a goal of mine since high school, my English teachers had such an incredible impact on me. I've heard many horror stories of people who had terrible teachers and it turned them away from it, I want to assist in changing that. Thank you for the well wishes, I'm sure I'll do fine where ever I end up. But back to the question, Sam, what kind of swim baits do you like to use, where, and why? Quote

Na, I have been having some issues of my own, I was only out 3 times this past year, only once on my own boat, that was at the meet and greet over at Anna, the other two was with a couple of really great people I have met from here and they were kind enough to share their boat with me, I had a lot of fun though, learning some new waters and getting to know Zoff and his family and quanjig and the Res. Glad to hear you are just about to graduate, congrats !! and the best of luck no matter where you end up, I still want that fishing trip we had planned so call me when you can, I need to get a trolling motor for my boat first though lol !! Super User SPEEDBEAD. Posted January 30, 2013 Super User Posted January 30, 2013 What is your heaviest setup? Member named DEEP is pretty darn good with swimbaits and I know he is from VA. I would pay attention to what he says as it may translate to your waters pretty well. Quote
