Super User LgMouthGambler Posted January 29, 2013 Author Super User Posted January 29, 2013 OP didnt you just very recently start a thread that your end all of all rods was the shimano Sellus and that rods costing more were needless for you and your style of fishing? Yes I did, but when your a tackle junkie, I mean enthusiest, its just nice to see a vast variety. Sellus is awesome, but not all I own. Use them for my reaction style rigs. Have since bought 2 more rigs, needind more sensative rods for fishing needing more feeling, Compre rods. Just want to see more options. I also stated that, lets see if I no longer need to spend the $100, well I did for the sensativity.
Super User Hooligan Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 I had a long, drawn out response to this, and realized it is a situation in which it will do no good. You say it's nice to see a vast variety, well, newsflash, there's a HUGE assortment out there for the tackle enthusiast, they just happen to be at enthusiast prices, not value priced, low quality, bargain basement materials and construction prices. To insinuate that even Shimano builds a good rod at the $100 mark is somewhat contradictory. They build an adequate rod in that category, not good. Abu Garcia, Daiwa, and others blow them away. Period. You're in the $150 range before you get a decent Shimano with quality components, graphite, and resins. There are $100 rods worth owning, I've got quite a few Veritas, but the vast majority compare in no way to higher end rods. Also, for the record, TFO does not = Loomis. Not in build, not in weight, not in sensitivity, not in components, and not in design. They cannot be even remotely compared on a scale; they are that vastly different.

Super User Jrob78 Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 Because you can never have enough options in fishing. I think every brand should try to cover all price ranges for consumers. Is it going to happen prob not, but it would be nice. Was just a thought that it would be a nice option for consumers. Companies are under no obligation to "cover all price ranges for consumers." That's crazy. Besides, if Loomis (for example) did make a $100 rod, it wouldn't be any better than any of the other $100 rods on the market. They would have to cut something, either components, blank materials or both. St. Croix has a few rods in that price range, they're decent rods but nothing special and nowhere close to their higher end offerings. If anything, you could make a case that it hurts their brand. Loomis is held on a pedestal because they make very high quality fishing rods, they would be crazy to drop their standards because not everyone can afford it.
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted January 29, 2013 Author Super User Posted January 29, 2013 Wow, some of you are reading this all wrong, or looking for something that isnt there. I guess some of the prices that some of you are wiling to pay are way higher than mine. Some of you say there is enough options and no need for more. Some saying that if they dropped to making a $100 rod it would be no better than whats available. I get it, but most people arent willing to pay $200 for a rod, some people would like to see companies partake in the price range build to see what they would offer. Would it be better than whats available, who knows, but wouldnt you like to see? Geeez, get all out of whack about it why dont you. 1
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted January 29, 2013 Author Super User Posted January 29, 2013 Have you fished a Crucial yet? Yes, but that will get me in trouble if I start fishing those. They are sweeeeeet though.
Super User rockchalk06 Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 Yes, but that will get me in trouble if I start fishing those. They are sweeeeeet though. It's the reason i want another. It blew me away
endless Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Yes, but that will get me in trouble if I start fishing those. They are sweeeeeet though. To bad you couldn't have caught their older models when they were on clearance for such a great price. I got mine not for the greatest price but still at $140 I think. Just always got to stay on the look out never know what you might come across. I do own a couple of Carbonlites and Pro qualifier rods I am happy with.
Super User Hooligan Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 Pay attention to the flea market, you can pick up Cumaras for around $100. heck, you could get Cumara for $105 from TW before they ran out...

I almost pulled the trigger when TW put them on sale. By the time I decided O was gonna do it, they were sold out of what I was going to get.

Super User kickerfish1 Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 Lgmthgambler, Your question seemed ok but when you start asking companies to build "value" rods that typically don't compete in this arena is where the problem lies. Look at megabass for example. Just because they build rods doesn't mean they will build one for $100 yet alone $300. They make harbaits but you wont find one for under $10 from a retailer. Point is anglers have many options of rods in this $100 pricepoint. Not all manufactures want to compete in a saturated market. The following comapnies already compete there... shimano, St. Croix, BPS, Abu, Daiwa, fenwick, Denali, ***, quantum, wright and McGill, falcon, etc... that is over 10 options right there off the top of my head. The other hard part for me to believe is that we all know you fish some pretty nice curados and chronarch reels. Full retail of these reels is $150- $200. For bottom contact or sensitivity needed techniques just step up to a better rod. If you spent as much on rods as you do your reels your options would probably double or triple would probably be amazed at the difference.
bmlum415 Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 If you want a $100 Loomis rod, buy a TFO Gary Loomis Signature Series rod. They're in that price range and are a true Loomis, rather than a Shimano rod with the GLoomis logo slapped on it. Or theres the the new kistler klx ,made with a north fork composites blank which is are made Gary himself which makes it a loomis, and they're like 160 if my facts are right
bmlum415 Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Also if you buy a bunch or even a few $100 rods, why not save $50-150 more and you could use a crucial, gl2, dobyns savvy or champ, kistler klx,etc..
papajoe222 Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Because you can never have enough options in fishing. I think every brand should try to cover all price ranges for consumers. Is it going to happen prob not, but it would be nice. Was just a thought that it would be a nice option for consumers. Okay, now I get it. Like Daiwa produces a $500 reel and still offers a Quality product in the $150 range. Yea, and I don't think it'd take Lomis off the pedestal some have them on, except for maybe those that have them there.
Rangerphil Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Some people will not pay 150-200 for a rod even if they found the money laying on the side of the road. That is their preference and I understand. As far as other companies making cheaper rods why not you never know they may come out with something just a little better than what is already out there. as far as the shimano crucials go I bought 2 new ones a while back for dirt cheap, I think they were like 60.00 a piece they are the 6'6" mh baitcaster ones that have the full cork and I love them. I still have one brand new that I have not figured on what to use it for yet!

Yeah the best $100 rods are the ones that are on sale for around that price. Last year got a Legend Elite, LTB, and Cumara for total all together of $345- oh and a Clarus for $30.
gripnrip Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 I believe what LMG is saying is "Man I wish there were more rods in the $100 range because so and so suggested a rod at $185. What if I don't like it? I could have had 2 rods for that much." What his heart is saying "I wish Shimano would come out with 17 more rods at $100 so I can oh and awe over them." :-)

That's another price range, lots of people won't spend $100 for a rod either

Super User deep Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 Spend as much or as little as you want to; but if $100 is what you want to spend, aren't there already a lot of rods in the market? What I don't like is that most manufacturers don't make rods in the length, power, and actions I want/ prefer. In fact, Powell is the only brand that actually does. 1
