tubeman Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 My new medium/fast action rod from TightLineCustoms.com is almost ready and I am chomping at the bit! I am trying to choose between the 2500 series of Quantum, Daiwa, and Shimano. I have the Daiwa Exceler TSH Reels,2500 series, on my All Pro Rods Small Mouth Guru Medium/fast and on my medium light/fast on my other TightLine. I had a Shimano Sahara 3000 on my Guru and noticed the other day when I was fishing that the drag was stripped. I don't know how it happened, but it did. I will be river fishing using mostly tubes/creatures in 3-4 inch size. I am finally investing in a fishing kayak, but will wade fish alot. It is great that there are many to choose from, but can be confusing. Any suggestions? I'm not trying to advertise for anyone, just trying to give as much information as possible. Quote
Rangerphil Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Well I used to be a quantum man and still like some of their reels but without a doubt the best spinning reel IMO is a shimano stradic fj. You can find them on eBay for around 140.00. This reel will handle anything you throw at it and is also a beautiful piece of machinery! I got one for drop shotting and probably more to come! 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted January 28, 2013 Super User Posted January 28, 2013 I would see if you can take your new rod with you when you look at reels. I would check the feel of each reel on the rod. 1 Quote
tubeman Posted January 28, 2013 Author Posted January 28, 2013 I wish that we had a nice outdoors store here. Gander Mountain is the closet in Roanoke, VA. I need one that will stand-up to being under water when I fall or accidentally submerge it when I'm tying a lure on. The Stradic is being considered. Don't mind paying good money for one if it lasts. skeletor6 Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 If you can afford the Stradic FJ I second that suggestion. Shimano has patented one of the best line management systems for spinning reels and the FJ is built with many quality components on top of that. I highly doubt that there will be any drag issues with this reel also. Quote

One of your "friends" switched name tags so that the Shimano name tag is now on your Daiwa reel and vice versa. Quote
thehooligan Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 I also agree the stradic fj is probally the best spinning reel ive owned for the money. I have a sustain as well and to be honest i think i like my stradic better, lol Quote
tubeman Posted January 28, 2013 Author Posted January 28, 2013 Thanks a lot! I believe I will get the Stradic. Quote

That All-Pro SMG sure is a sweet rod. It flat out ruined me. Started using that same rod last year. I used to use bionic blades and BPS Extreme (still do for cranks and spinner bait), but the sensitivity on that rod fishing with soft plastics, jigs, or swimbaits is unbelievable and it wont bend past that 2nd eye, but the tip is very forgiving so it takes those surges a smallmouth makes at the boat. Tough to beat that rod if you are specifically targeting smallmouth. Super sensitive too. The Stradic FJ would make that rod a dream combo. Quote

The sensitivity is phenomenal. I also have an AllProRod in a 5'6" (I believe) in an ultra-light with a Tennessee handle that they made a special run of. The rods from TightLine are right there with the guru, It takes Charlie Armentrout, owner of TLCR, awhile to build one since he is a one man show. TKCR uses St.Croix blanks. That guru will handle some mean walleye also. That may have been what killed the Sahara. I'm probably going to put the Daiwa on the new pole and the Stradic on the guru. Quote

Super User SirSnookalot Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 I am going to send the Sahara back to Shimano. Never hurts to have a spare! Doesn't pay to do so, by the time you pay labor and parts, then shipping 2 ways you can almost by a new reel and you'll have it right away. My options would be doing it myself, local repair shop or buy new. 1 Quote
shootermcbob Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 I agree with Snook, shipping and insurance to and back plus the cost of the repair will most likely be around 40-45 dollars plus...unless you think they will repair the reel "under warranty". You can get find a new Shimano Sahara right now for less than 60.00 bucks. I would find a local repairman as well. Quote
tubeman Posted January 29, 2013 Author Posted January 29, 2013 Sirsnook/shootem, I have to agree after In thought about it.There is a local guy, but I am going to hang on to the reel in case I run across one for spare parts. The Stradic is calling me. LOL! Quote
