c17Lat Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 I just tried out my brand new $50 berkley digital lip grip scale. Caught 3 last night that went 3-15, 3-11, and 4-10. I thought they were all smaller than what the scale read, so I weighed some of my lifting weights with the scale back home. A 5 lb weight was 5 lbs 8 oz on the scale. I had similar results with other weights. I don't understand? Quote
c17Lat Posted March 22, 2010 Author Posted March 22, 2010 I just weighed the same 5 lb weight twice, making sure I keep the scale still and vertical and got 5-14 and 5-6. What's the point of spending $50 on a scale that's going to be as accurate as your best guess? Quote

Super User K_Mac Posted March 22, 2010 Super User Posted March 22, 2010 There was a recent thread about the "best" scales. The XTools digital was recommended by a number of folks. I received mine Sat. and have not had a chance to use it on the water. I have done some testing at home and it is accurate and consistent. It has the added benefit of being water resistant/proof and it floats. It is a little more than you spent on the Berkley, but based on my limited use it works well. When you take the Berkley back, Tackle Warehouse has the XTools in stock. Quote
bweave09 Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 At least your berkley scale worked....mine never did Quote
Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted March 22, 2010 Super User Posted March 22, 2010 i had a 50 lb. berkely digital scale(from wal-mart) that was horribly off > i am thinking of giving the rapala 50 lb. mini a try , here is the link for it http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_10203288_100011004_100000000_100011000_100-11-4 Quote

Gamec0cks5 Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 That's strange my Berkley scale works great and I've had it matched up to a analog one and its spot on off by maybe a oz once before Quote

basspro215 Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 i got the cheap Berkley scale from Wall-mart cost like 20$ weighs up to 50lb i think and I've had it for like 3 years and still works like a charm never even had to replace the battery's Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted March 22, 2010 Super User Posted March 22, 2010 yeah my post above applies to both berkley scales i've owned, the 50lb hook scale from walmart, and the 30lb digital lip grip. Quote

Super User J Francho Posted March 23, 2010 Super User Posted March 23, 2010 I think mine was about $60. Quote
Turtle. Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 I have had a Berkley digital $20 scale for over four years now. Changed the batteries for the first time last year. Has always checked out +/- one ounce. Go to the grocery and buy a gallon jug and a half a gallon jug of water. Have them weigh them on there certified scales, wright the weights on the jugs. Now you have two different certified weights to check your scales against. Quote
Super User David P Posted March 26, 2010 Super User Posted March 26, 2010 Berkeley scales from all the buddies I've talked to are about 1 in 10 when it comes to accuracy. You're going to go through SEVERAL before you find an accurate one. XTOOLS scales are a bit better, but I've had one that was horrifically off, by over 5lbs . Boga Grips from what I hear are quite accurate although only weigh in .2 of an oz increments. Many of the big fish guys out here use a Salter scale, they're not water proof, and pricey ($80-$100), but they're dead on. I highly recommend one, if you're able to keep it dry. I'm on my second one now, both have been dead on accurate and it was well worth the money. Quote
