Topwaterspook Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 My resolution for 2013 is to catch fish on a jigs. They're definitely not a confidence bait for me. That being said; I'd like suggestions on a starter set. I'm prepared to set aside a 3700 box for jigs and trailers. I need some guidence on types, weights, sizes, colors, situations they're used in....etc. I thought Seibert may have such a beginners offering but apparently not. That might be something they'd consider putting together. From the comments I've read here, they appear to have a good following. Thanks in advance. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 27, 2013 Super User Posted January 27, 2013 Order the mod pack of Storm Jigs, and pick up some Ragetail Chunk trailers in black and blue and green pumpkin. I'd start with 1/2 oz. http://www.siebertoutdoors.com/index.php/storm-series 2 Quote
gripnrip Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 weights. Football heads Regular heads Swim jig heads As far as colors go. Browns, greens, and black/blue are what I usually use. I use Rage Tail baits for my trailers. But any style chunk will work. A thread is pinned at the top of the tackle forum. Click on that. It will help tremendously. Quote
CPBassFishing Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Also one of my resolutions. What I am starting with. (Making my own) 16 1/2 oz black brush jigheads, 16 1/2 oz bluegill swim jigheads, 4 black 1/2 oz football jigheads, and a Skirt tying kit (comes with rattles, the skirt rings, skirt making tool, and skirting material.) Then I'm getting skirt material is a few other colors. 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted January 27, 2013 Super User Posted January 27, 2013 Here ya go ~ PM me your mailing address and I'll send you a whole box of quality jigs - on me. I still jig fish and these are good baits but I just have WAY TOO Many. This will be completely sufficient assortment to get you going . . . I've been watching for an opportunity to re-home these and it looks like you're the lucky guy - if you want them. Let me know. A-Jay 10 Quote
soccplayer07 Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 1/2 ounce football and alien head. black/blue, pb&j, and something in green pumpkin or watermelon. Rage chunks in matching colors for trailers. Quote
Super User Teal Posted January 27, 2013 Super User Posted January 27, 2013 Totally agree with J Francho. I wish i would have found Seibert Outdoor jigs, a long time ago. You cant beat the price and craftsmanship. Ive been paying almost 6 bucks per jig For similar craftmanship and componets. Ill still use my old jigs, but i wont go back to them. The mod pack idea is great. The color selection has been done for you. All you have to do is choose a size and a headshape. As a beginner i would start with the brush jig at 1/2 or 3/8. If you plan on skipping the jig under docks or into cover, i like arky heads at 3/8. IMO the mod pack has a good range in colors and styles that are both classic and proven. Jig fishing is my main technique. Take it from me, if wishi somone would have showed me a SO Mod Pack, 10 years ago, it would have saved me alot of heartache and money. 1 Quote

Super User flyfisher Posted January 27, 2013 Super User Posted January 27, 2013 Anyone care to talk a little about jig heads? I am new to jig fishing myself and am looking to add it to my bag of tricks this season. I know the football heads seem to be the jig of choice for rockt areas but what makes the brush jig better than say the grass jig for brush. To me it looks like the grass head will go through the grass better due to the shape but as far as the brush head i can't figure out why it would be better for fishing the brush. I fish lakes with a lot of grass so i will most likely be getting mostly grass heads but i am curious about the brush ones too. Quote

rmcguirk Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 Done Deal - The Brown Truck will be stopping at your place by the end of the week. A-Jay Wow, just wow. AJ, I don't know you, but you the man. This is not the first time I've seen someone on this board do something like this, but I'm amazed every time. This is really an outstanding place to hang out, learn and make friends, even if virtual. Thanks to the Mods for fostering the atmosphere and making this place friendly, welcoming and one of the most helpful internet boards out there (on any topic). Rick 1 Quote
Jaiden Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 I use the following jigs: 3/8 oz brush jigs in green/brown and black/blue 1/2 oz football jigs in the same colors 3/4 oz flipping jigs in the same colors 3/8 oz swim jigs in the same colors plus white and bluegill patterns I use a variety of trailers. In cold weather (or the bite is slow) use craw like trailers that don't have claws that flap around and have a tremendous amount of action. This offers a more subtle aproach. In warmer weather use trailers that create a swimming action. Twin tail grubs, rage craws, paca craws, etc. I match my trailer color to my jig color. Good luck and let the fish tell you the way you should fish them. Quote
