TriCityBassin' Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 Cotton Cordell Baby Wiggle'O No other crankbait has produced for me like this one has. I am always asking ppl if they have one and if they want to sell it. It is my favorite bait to search ebay for...i usually don't find them however. The search continues. I cannot determine why they stopped making them. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 30, 2013 Super User Posted January 30, 2013 No one mentions 7" ribbon tail worms anymore. Now it's all about creatures. Quote
hookset on 3 Posted February 8, 2013 Author Posted February 8, 2013 No one mentions 7" ribbon tail worms anymore. Now it's all about creatures. J, got your back on that one! Culprit or Power worms were the joint, but got kind of kicked to the curb. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 8, 2013 Super User Posted February 8, 2013 I forgot all about my Culprits when Powerworms came out. Quote
Super User Teal Posted February 8, 2013 Super User Posted February 8, 2013 Here on lake gaston when the hydrilla starts growing, a 7" zoom or power worm can be leathal. I will agree with Francho that ribbontails fell back a little with all the new creatures coming out. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 8, 2013 Super User Posted February 8, 2013 They're much better when searching moderate grass beds. Creatures pick up weeds and debris, while worms slide through the grass. A creature makes a much better drop bait, when working pockets, though "swinging a worm" through a pocket may also be the ticket. Quote
38 Super Fan Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 I still like Jitterbugs, and Hula poppers. Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted February 8, 2013 Super User Posted February 8, 2013 I miss the opaque painted crankbaits that had gold or silver foil in the body, man I wish I could find some. I had a red bomber with gold foil that was a fish catching machine. Quote
Bigbarge50 Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 How 'bout Smithwick Devil's Horse? I hope they are still popular..... seems a lot of guys still throw em, but your right in the sense it seems if you say top water everyone says sammy or rico..... but the horse is still awesome at bringing up some good fish. Jig Meister Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Do not remember the name, or the brand, but I used to buy these ribbon tail worms from SUper K-Mart when I was a kid. They were Strawberry and Raspberry flavored, and colored. I used to catch bass on the Purple ones like CRAZY. All I remember is the smell, smelled just like fruit lol. edit: Found them! It was Manns Jelly Worm, they were not ribbon tailed but a sort of paddle tail. Man these things used to kill them! Might have to get a nostalgia pack Quote

A-Jay I remember in the 70's when my Plano tackle box (not bag), used to smell good when I opened it. Now, whew, I've got nasty scents like Powerbait sauce, Smelly Jelly, Bang, all kinds of garlic ones. Don't get me wrong, I use them faithfully, but when it's hot out, my tackle bag (not box) opens up it could gag a maggot. 1 Quote
SudburyBasser Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 For me it's the Jitterbug. Used to use it back a few decades ago when I was in high school and then hadn't touched it in years. Decided to throw it last summer. Didn't catch anything on it but it felt good to use an oldie goldie lure again. Probably use it more this summer just to give it a decent tryout. Quote
11justin22 Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 How about a French fry? Anybody still fish with those? Rember fishing those a lot growing up. Quote

When I was a kid growing up on the rivers this was THE go to at dusk into night on a full moon. You would hear them slapping at it on every cast. We would float the river for hours and just smash the fish. Now that river has had something spilled in it and catching a 12" bass in mid summer is a surprise in some sections. I just changed hooks on two the other day. The hooks were molded into the bait via the hangers. I actually had to cut the hook, add split rings before adding hooks again. 2 Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted February 12, 2013 Super User Posted February 12, 2013 Helin's Flatfish. And even the Heddon River Runt, both of which are still made today. Just don't hear of anyone doing well either. Quote
loodkop Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Was out fished recently by my partner using an original floating Rapala. I'm busy putting new split rings and hooks on mine. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted February 12, 2013 Super User Posted February 12, 2013 These bait's have fallen off my radar............for no real good reason either, I used to catch TONS of fish on them, but rarely if ever use them anymore. A 3"-4" single tail grub slow rolled on a ball jig head A 7.5" texas rigged ribbon tail worm A Johnson's Silver minnow weedless spoon with a double tail grub trailer, worked over the top of thick grass like a frog/toad A super shallow running crankbait like a subwart or Mann's baby 1- And floating stick/jerkbaits like an original Rapala. In fact, add a 3/8 oz black/blue jig, a green or brown 4" finesse worm, and a 3/8 oz chart/white colorado/willow tandem spinner bait (all of which I do still use often) to that list, and that WAS my arsenal for about 20 years. Gangley Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 For me, its the Bomber Balsa B crankbait. It didnt last too long. It is was a larger profile Balsa squarebill with a thick lexan lip. It had a shallow dive angle and wide wobble, and was THE TOUGHEST squarebill to snag, PERIOD. BINGO Quote
