Daddyodo Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 I just got a new laptop and it came with windows8 which so far I cannot stand . Any suggestions on good tutorials other than the Microsoft websight? Quote
Super User tomustang Posted January 26, 2013 Super User Posted January 26, 2013 I hate 8, Kill it with fire? 1 Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted January 26, 2013 Super User Posted January 26, 2013 I haven't seen it in person but seeing it in commercials has not excited me. I did see some of the windows smart phones, the tile system may not be too bad a set up for that venue. Quote
Super User BrianinMD Posted January 26, 2013 Super User Posted January 26, 2013 I have it and actually do not mind it at all. Granted completely different but i do not think it is horrible. Not sure where there are tutorials, what issue you having? Quote
Super User Root beer Posted January 26, 2013 Super User Posted January 26, 2013 Ha! My bestfriend has a client who uses Window 8, and he has to use it at her office. He absolutely hate it. lol. Quote
Super User Marty Posted January 27, 2013 Super User Posted January 27, 2013 Just do a search on this term and you'll have more material than you can use. windows 8 tutorial Quote
ClackerBuzz Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 8 was the straw that broke this camels back. i just bought my first apple. we all know they don't have viruses like windows but the icing on the cake is i don't have to learn a whole new operating system every 3 years 2 Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 27, 2013 Super User Posted January 27, 2013 I have two new Vostros 270s sitting in my den waiting to be installed at my home and office. My IT guy said not to get Windows 8 but to stay with Windows 7, which I did. May get a third Vostros 270 for my assistant at the office. Still debating the $580 cost. I can get a nice G. Loomis NRX rod for $580. Or beautiful Costa DelMar prescription sunglasses and still have some money left over. Decisions - Decisions - Decisions. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted January 27, 2013 Super User Posted January 27, 2013 For some reason I can't hop on the Apple bandwagon, I do hear wonderful things about them. Never had much trouble adapting to a new MSFT os, if there is a complaint it would be non compatible programs, but that is the aim of MSFT forcing the purchase of new software. Now that I'm comfortable with win 7, I'd prefer doing a total reformat instead of the new tile system. Quote

Now that I'm comfortable with win 7, I'd prefer doing a total reformat instead of the new tile system. Microsoft Office now works on Apple. That the only software I need from MSFT to work on Apple to make it my next purchase. I'm definitely buying a Macbook Pro as my next laptop, whenever I can get around to it. I just love how the laptop works. I cannot explain it, just watch some tech guy uses the laptop. My bestfriend use it for work and I've seen him use that laptop in ways I cannot use my dell. Some people don't need an Apple to just browse the web, that would be a waste of money. If you have to use it for technical stuff, it's an amazing laptop. In my opinion. Quote
scrutch Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 I WAS a lifelong pc guy. I now use apple products. All my pc's will be replaced with Macs when they die. I'm tired of open source. 1 Quote

CFFF 1.5 Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 I recommend two pieces of software. Classic Shell and Skip Metro Suite. Check this out, should help you a lot. http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/software-and-web-apps/how-to-make-windows-8-look-like-windows-7-50009546/ 1 Quote
jeb2 Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 Similar situation here. We just got a 15.4" touchscreen laptop with Win8. I'm an IT guy and approached it with an open mind. But I'm not a fan so far. It's so odd that it kicks you back into a classic desktop if you run certain apps, like MS Office. I'm sure we'll get used to it, but I don't think it's going to be a big hit, personally. Big learning curve on this one. Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted January 29, 2013 Super User Posted January 29, 2013 All the apple love on here is sickening. Apple is over priced for what you get. The operating system is very limited as far as what the machine is capable of achieving. The accessories are ridiculously priced, and their customer service is a joke which can be said for windows too. Plus the anti virus is not that great. The amount of virus' that are out there for an apple are no where near the amount out there for windows. So yeah apples get fewer virus' then windows machines. Windows is not much better at least not their new operating systems. However at least the machines running them are not 1100 dollars for a laptop with a 15in. screen. As for the OP. Just look around the internet for tutorials. Or go to bestbuy or some other computer store and ask them for help. We have three computers at home two run windows vista and one runs linux. The one with linux is used for gaming and other various things. The two with vista one is used for shopping and surfing the web. The other is used exclusively for smut. I have no problems with any of them. The Linux machine is one of the most powerful computers I have used. Quote
ClackerBuzz Posted January 29, 2013 Posted January 29, 2013 Apple is over priced for what you get. I agree their laptop and imac costs too much so i bought the Mini. i'm not happy with apple or pc at the moment. but in another 3-4yrs i'll be content with the cloud offering open storage for all files and won't look back. i'll give you a tip the guy in the apple store gave me: buy a mini for $599 and use the $700 you saved on a macbook to buy a new 42" TV to hook it up to! hilarious and beautiful idea. with the op...GREAT suggestions CFFF1.5. i'll pass that info onto many frustrated friends and family. i love technology. As I mentioned in my previous post, if you are just using Apple products for internet only, it's overpriced. If you use it for much more than that, it blows PC out of the water. I was just like you in regard to Apple's powerful ego when it came to their pricing model, but when I tried it, good lord it blows PC out of the water. Like the iPhone for instance, Android has an open source where any nitwit can create an app for it. Apple doesn't allow this, it all has to be approved or whatever by Apple's developers. If you go to the app store on an Android phone and look at the reviews of app, you will noticed it gets great and bad reviews and it will vary by phones. My Incredible was glitchy as crap. iPhone is so much more technical sound and no glitch. The laptops are same way, that why there certain software for Mac and PC. Anyone can create PC stuff, but Mac keeps their craps through them. That why it so technical sound. I'm still using my Dell laptop I got for $1,400 5 years ago but since I have installed Window 7. My bestfriend and two other accounting classmates I went to school with uses Macbook, it's incredibly amazing. Since I deal with a lot of Office files, Mac has now allowed Office to be installed on the Mac, so now it's leading candidate for my next laptop. Apple isn't for everyone and I understand this, and not everybody can afford or justify spending money on Apple compare to cheaper laptops; I think it worth buying Apple for me giving the use I should get out of it. Edit: One example of what I love about Macbook, it's so fast comapred to PC. When you start up Window, it goes through that loading process, right? On Mac, you turn off laptop, you turn it on you are back to the desktop... It's ready to operate in literally 5 seconds... 1 Quote

I know thats a low blow seeing as how most all business use microsoft office suite. My Toshiba running Linux is used for a lot more than just internet surfing. I run Auto Cad, Spool Cad, and Plant Cad on it too. I really just enjoy playing with these programs. I dont really have any use for them at the moment other then entertainment. These programs all work flawlessly on this computer. Plus start up on said computer is actually very fast. As for the programs apple releases with the exception of maybe Pro Tools. I cant really think of any other ones that are above and beyond the offerings of microsoft. Either way windows computers and apple computers are both loaded down with "filler" programs and other junk that does nothing but waste memory and slow down said computer. Its easier to remove said stuff and to increase performance on a pc as opposed to an apple or so Ive been told. Especially if their computers are locked down like their phones are. As for phones Im not going to branch that far off topic with that. Even though Samsung is 10x's better thwn Apple in that department. That debate is for another day though. Quote
GeorgiaBassBros Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 the most useful thing in windows 8 ive found so far is to click in the top left of the screen Quote

Super User Sam Posted January 31, 2013 Super User Posted January 31, 2013 My wife is looking at a new laptop and she likes the 14.0 screen with Windows 8 from what she saw in the store. I will tell her to go for the 15.6 inch screen model with the Windows 7 and forget the 8. Sincerely appreciate everyone's input on this topic. Your help is greatly appreciated, be it pro or con about Windows 8 and the McIntosh products. Quote

I've been relentlessly phone shopping the last few weeks, haven't found the right combination of I want yet. I loved the way HTC 8x felt in my hand, but those tiles was a bit of turnoff and the app market isn't what I desired. Quote
jeb2 Posted January 31, 2013 Posted January 31, 2013 Apple's iOS is written in Linux. True, but it's like being in Linux with handcuffs on. I'm a software developer and hate working in iOS. Good machine for non-techies, though, at least if you can stomach getting hosed on the hardware side of the equation. Quote
