nwmike Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 anyone else ever go back to fishing a certain way or product they may have left behind.I recently switched back to using copoly lines.I was using fluro almost exclusively but was unhappy with the amount of break offs I was having when fishing the rocky bottoms of most of the lakes and reservoirs I fish.I used to love fishing zara spooks but started leaving them behind on trips in favour for sammys and bonnies.back to fishing the spooks over the rest.I guess things come back around at least for me they did. War Eagle 44 Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 I've noticed that I do this to, I'll just stop fishing a lure thats been working for no particular reason other than I just move on to something new that I think is better. The two I can think of right now are Senko's (which I've just stopped fishing altogether for some reason??) and PJ's Lil Brush jigs. I do fish one of the jigs every now and then, maybe 4 times a year or something like that. I'm not sure why we as fishermen do this?? Quote
nwmike Posted January 26, 2013 Author Posted January 26, 2013 I think all of us tend to get caught up in the latest and greatest.I will admit that trying new stuff is part of the fun but going back to something that works is also fun and productive. I catch just as many fish with the classic spook as I did with my bonnies.I forgot how great a spook walks. Quote
Super User MCS Posted January 26, 2013 Super User Posted January 26, 2013 This winter I went back to swimming grubs on a jig head, hadn't did that since I was 15. Quote
thehooligan Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 I gotta get back to fishing senkos. Also, when i was a kid the only plastics i fished were curly tail 7-1/2 worms texas rigged, i cant remember the last time i fished one... Seems like the only plastics i fish anymore are dropshot or shakeyhead.... 1 Quote
nwmike Posted January 26, 2013 Author Posted January 26, 2013 I'm going to have to try the grub and jig again I used to swim them when I was bank fishing all the time.great smallmouth tactic here in oregon. 1 Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted January 26, 2013 Super User Posted January 26, 2013 Not really a way I "used" to fish but.........for quite a few years I have been, based on how well a "Good" friend of mine catches them, tried to adopte the way he catches smallmouth on our home like. And I would catch them, some times have pretty good days, but never with the overall results and consistancy he has. This year I said to heck with it, and fished for them my way....and what do you know, turns out my way is pretty good. Quote
nwmike Posted January 26, 2013 Author Posted January 26, 2013 doing things your way with excellent results is a very rewarding feeling. Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted January 26, 2013 Super User Posted January 26, 2013 The way I used to fish!! When I was 14 yrs. old, I used to have some black nylon braided line wound around a Popsicle stick, a matchbox full of hooks an sinkers, and a couple of round bobbers in my pocket. I would hitchhike, {not safe, but safer back then} up to the lake { the lake I still fish, by the way}. I would then take out my trusty, rusty "ole" pocket knife, cut me a limb, dig me a few worms, rig up and catch the heck out of yellow belly catfish, all day long. That is the honest to God truth. That was 54 yrs. ago. Would I like to go try that again? ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, UNDENIABLY, NOOOO!!!! Hootie 3 Quote
greyleg33 Posted January 27, 2013 Posted January 27, 2013 When I was a kid we bicycled down to the, in the NW its known as a crik, and caught 4" trout. If we got a 6 incher we thought it was a hawg. 1 Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 27, 2013 Super User Posted January 27, 2013 Will be fishing the Carolina rig and jigs more this year. Got on the Senko, shaky head and wacky rigged plastic kick a number of years ago and have not fished the Carolina rig or jigs as much as I should. Looking forward to the first two bass club tournaments to hit them with crankbaits, pointers, a Carolina rig and of course, jigs and pigs. Will be interesting to purchase some new pork trailers and to see what is available in pork. Quote
jignfule Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 I find that in the last few years I've gotten away from slow presentations of senkos and power worm and the like. I'm sure I'll cycle back into them eventually. I find I'd rather catch a few on frog or jigs then many on plastic worm. Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 A regular old texas rigged worm. Twitchen a floating minnow bait. Those were staples in the late 70's. Quote
Diggy Posted January 28, 2013 Posted January 28, 2013 my goto was a tequila sunrise worm growing up .... i need to try them again 1 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted January 28, 2013 Super User Posted January 28, 2013 Guess it'd be using live nightcrawlers again, like Fish Chris does. I tried it after reading his nightcrawler article a few years back, but have since gotten into plastics so much I only buy the crawlies for the kids, or if I want to target sunnies/crappie. And I'm not talking nightcrawlers with a float, I'm talking weightless, fluoro or copoly leader and a small hook thru the nose. Let it sink. I've also tried (via a friend's tip) using a fine syringe and injecting air into the tail section of a thick crawler. Man there was some serious action and a bass came up from the bottom and took it. A beautiful thing.... Quote
nwmike Posted January 29, 2013 Author Posted January 29, 2013 my goto was a tequila sunrise worm growing up .... i need to try them again this reminds me I have a bunch of berkley hand pours in tequila sunrise colour I need to dig out Quote
tholmes Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 my goto was a tequila sunrise worm growing up .... i need to try them again Still my favorite worm color. I need to get back to making and fishing hair jigs. I used to catch a lot of smallmouth on my home-brewed bucktails, but I've kinda drifted away from hair jigs.I need to drift back. Tom Quote
endless Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 One of the ways I remember growing up was fishing line around a soda or beer can(whatever we found) Tied the line around the can, hand toss line out, and twirl the line around then can till fish was in. We used whatever we could for bait. One time me and my buddy was just using sunflower seeds. It worked for bluegills, lol. Quote
