CPBassFishing Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Hey everyone, I am getting tired of my current spinning setup and I want another baitcasting combo. My current setups- 1: 6'6" medium berkley lighting rod, 7.1:1 gear ratio daiwa takara reel, 20lb powerpro 2: 6' medium ugly stik, crappy $15 3.6:1 gear ratio red shakespeare reel, 14lb nanofil The spinning setup is complete junk and I am going to use it as a panfishing rod. What I am looking at: 7' 6" heavy abu garcia vengeance casting rod, 7.1:1 daiwa laguna. 7' medium abu garcia vengeance spinning rod, 6.4:1 shimano sedona. Do you think those setups are good for my needs? My current baitcast setup is for thowing cranks, texas rigs, carolina rigs, spinnerbaits etc. My spinning is used for shaky heads, some smaller cranks, and small tubes and craws. I will be replacing my spinning rod with the new combo, and the new baitcast combo for fishing, swimbaits, jigs, punching, and other heavy bait techniques. I have already decided one the rods and reels, my question is more about the actions and gear ratios. I cannot afford more expensive combos. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted January 24, 2013 Super User Posted January 24, 2013 I would settle for a MH baitcast rod if you're going to apply it to multiple techniques. I'd only get a heavy rod if you're flipping/pitching really dense cover frequently or throwing large swimbaits all the time. Your spinning set up should be fine for a general purpose rod. If you can sling it...I'd go with the Shimano Symetre 2500. It's a tad lighter and smoother of a reel. Quote

I'm going to be throwing 1/2 oz jigs and up to 2oz swimbaits.....I would rather get the heavy action. Quote
Super User Solution new2BC4bass Posted January 24, 2013 Super User Solution Posted January 24, 2013 well I already have the medium action one..... I believe the Medium is rated for 1/4-3/4 oz. so I would venture to guess that you are pushing the rod's limits with 2 oz. swimbaits. Most MH rods top out around 1-1/4 although I have an older MH Cabela's XMLTi rod that is rated to 2-1/4 oz. The new model is only rated to 1-1/4 oz. I'd have to agree with you that a Heavy would be the better option if you are going to throw 2 oz. lures with it. With throwing lures that heavy, I would try to find a reel with an aluminum frame even if that requires buying used. Older Shimano Curados would be a good choice. 1 Quote
