I do the same. I found a good one a couple weeks ago sept i got my truck stuck to later be found bu a city worker who informed me i was on county wetland reservation and I should leave. I was allowed to fish there but no motorized vehicles are allowed and its over 10,000 dollar fine! Sometimes they lead to trouble, but there are some sweet spots out there you cant see from the road. Its a good way to find em and how to get there.

i found a small pond,oh about 1/2 the size of a normal residential yard..it was about 10ft deep, all made by natural,it looks like it was carved out into the coral rocks.i was exploring some trails on my atv,,mannnn that hole was full of fish, all i had that day in my backpack was a small spool of 15lf line ,a bobber and some bread..the min, that breaded hook hit the water, fish on..in 30min i got 2 bass,2oscars,& a gar..i guess they were hungry.i remember making a lil campfire n cooking hotdogs while i fished the hole,,,,,man that was the life..ive found alot of those old/abandoned lakes starting in broward and going north.

I always refer to Google Earth for potential fishing areas and especially places that I can launch.

Huh?

LOL !!!

That was me too when I first read the post.

As to the post, I started way way back when there was no Google, Bing, or any of those things, "Honey Holes" were found either by accident or by using a little thing called sonar, AKA "Flasher".

Today is much more "user friendly" when it come to locating new spots or checking out areas on a body of water your interested in before you even get to it, thank goodness for these inovations, I am not one to fish little ponds etc... I purchaced a boat for a reason, so unless it's some little campground pond that my daughter wants to try out or something of that nature, I generally will not even give them a second thought, my favorite way of searching new waters is still talking to the locals and the guides, I will offer to buy them lunch or something when I want some detailed info, I have made a lot of friends by doing this type of thing, something I can not get from a computer, im not saying it does not come in handy don't get me wrong, but it's just not the way I like doing things, but for someone looking for that kind of thing, it has to be a valuable tool I would think.

i remember doing just that talking to locals & at bait shops with my dad way back, yes we did get to meet many new folks, but non would give us any real good fishing spots(as expected),,we would spend all day searching 4 a spot on the boat & maybe find 1 or 2 maybe!...with goggle maps i find 1/2 a dozen new places 2 explore in 15min..i think any fishermen in 2013,that doesnt use Goggle is pretty much in the dark these days....i dont really need a lunching ramp,i have a 12ft jonboat with a 5hp & a trolling motor,i just launch it on the bank of any lake/canal & then put the motor on.

I have been using it since it first came out!

The other feature that is great about Google Earth is the time frame option, so you can look at potential spots during different water level years as an example.  Sometimes it can be deceiving though and can get you in trouble as far as thinking there is a trail to the spot only to find out the trail is overgrown or doesn't exist anymore. The measuring tool is also great so you can predict how much fuel/time it will take to get back into the area if you only have limited fuel such as in a jon boat or airboat. Lastly, the best part is you can find contours especially in Florida lakes since the images Google uses are high res.

I would not expect them to either, I would ask them for generally good locations, I was not looking for their "Honey holes" so to speak, I know that these spots are their bread and butter to make a living and there was no way I would ever attempt to ask for that kind of info.

Usually a good lunch or a beer or two would earn me some really good general locations to catch multiple fish in a short time period, it was still up to me to find the fish but at least I knew where to start my search lol.

I do use the google or bing search to look at areas I want to try but I don't use it to the extent that most do, I rely heavily on my map skills before I even turn on the computer, but it's always nice to have for really big lakes to mark some landmarks on my topo map incase there are a bunch of waterways where I will be.

in doing some reserech i found out that goggle earth, maps, bing buy the inages from the goverment, the inages can be anywere from a few weeks old to 2 years, they wont say,,i have found trials leading to lakes that seem open on goggle and then i find the woods have taken over, but a sharp machety does a great job of opening the trail again ( im gulty of that )..im like addicted to fidning secret fishing ponds/canals on goggle & then going to fish them..ive realized if u want good fishing u have 2 go were no 1 else goes.

At work when we always use homemade map books consisting google maps for our local lakes and for every lake or forestry area we go to. But when im breaking down my home lakes for fishinga or one of the ones i go to yearly on fishing trips i study and mark my bbig old school topo maps. Now i will zoom in and print out interesting areas on google pro only after ive studied the old topo. I like the big topo maps. And ill mark them up with little notes and if a certain area is productive or seems it will on a certain season or transitional period, ill then mark and save it on the GPS.

I've used Google earth and google maps since the *** and I have found some nice spots.  Being a shore freshwater fisherman one negative is that a place looks tasty on a map, but in person I may not be able to access it, fenced off or something, I've made long drives for nothing sometimes.  In must be something about the area, I go to a place yesterday only to be disappointed, I catch just so many more and more quality fish in backyard and a few places within a short distance of my home.  About this time of the year I get bassed out anyway, getting close to the time to get back to the ocean.

while searching for atv riding trails,i did come across a tiny canal, that looked very promising, i went on my atv yesterday 2 explore it,it was more like (a ditch),about 6ft wide & 6/7ft deep but it does run for miles.to my surprize it was full of fish, bass easyly 12in and up,lots of bait fish around and a few big snakeheads too..i pulled out my rod, bobber n worms from backpack,2sec after it was int he water my 1st bass,i got bored of catching fish yesterday, but at 2,30pm i ahd to run out of there,i noticed a small forest fire about 2miles away n the wind was pushing to me and were i had my truck parked..
