Hello all,

I hope you can answer some questions I have pertaining a rod and fishing reels. First off, I been doing research on rods and reels. Ive found the rod I want. The new 2013 St. Croix Legend Xtreme Spinning rod MH Fast 7 foot  (I think its a turqiouse color).  I will be using this rod for Spinners, and throwing plastics. I've own a st croix rod already and love it. My question for the rod is... Does St Croix have promotions or sales on there fishing rods besides the bargain room?

Now that you know my fishing rod, I need a fishing reel to go with it. I had four fishing reels I been researching in mind. 1. Pfleuger Patriach, 2. Quantum Smoke, 3. Quantum PTO, or 4. Shimano Sustain FG (a little too pricey).  I own a Pfleuger Supreme XT already and love it. Wouldnt mind owning the Pfleuger Patriach. I have friends who own Quantums but not high end Quantums. I hear Shimano is good too. Really these are the ones I like but im OPEN to all spinning reels to look at. Post below what you think would be a good combination for my St Croix Spinning rod. Also I want to try and have a color spinning reel that would look good with my rod. If you have any other spinning reels you like to throw into the equation so be my guest open to all different spinning reels. The price range would be anything around 300 or less. I plan to buy one at the Bass Pro Fishing Classic sale this february/march.

Thanks to all who can help!

Dude I own three pfluegers and love them, from 50-150 price range they can't be beat, but given the chance I would own the new Smoke, espeicially the inshore model.

Check out the Shimano Sahara.  I have 2 and they are great reels.  Some folks on here are Shimano NUTS! I'm not though.  If you just match your reel with the rod and go with it.  If you purchase the rod and reel at the same time at BPS have a salesperson help you and put the reel on the rod and see how it is balanced.  The above reels you mentioned may all feel differently on that rod.  Just my 2 cents.

I also will add im buying the rod from st croix itself because Bass Pro does not stock the Legend Xtreme rod anymore. Also lightweight is good but I can deal with a little weight. The only thing im purchasing at the spring fishing classic sale is a reel. The rod is coming from St. Croix itself. Also using for freshwater to catch Largemouth bass particulary. Also all other bass Smallmouth, Stripers, etc.

Ah. I see.  Take the rod in with you.  If you get it before of course!

Buy another Supreme before you buy the patriarch. For some reason the Supreme XT is a lot smoother than the Patriarch.

To answer one of your original questions, St Croixs usually only go on sale when they are being discontinued in favor of a new and improved model. Not to say that certain retailers don't ever put them on sale, but sales on them (except for the previously mentioned circumstances) don't happen often enough IMHO to "save" or "hold out" untill they are on sale. Especially with the Legend Extreme, as they just re-did that rod, so your looking , unless this current generation is a sales flop, at at least a few years for any of them to be on sale.

My spinning reel is a Quantum Catalyst PT, really nice reel. For some reason Quantum always have allot of overruns or overstock, this time of year finding one of their spinning reels half off is not difficult, I just picked up a quantum kinetic baitcater for 50 bucks shipped. Good luck

I have a shimano Sahara which I really love. Think it is a 2400 which runs somewhere around 60 but cabelas was selling them for 40 a couple weeks back. You might want to check it out but I also heard great things about the pfluger

I have a 2013 ml Extreme with a Patriarch. I think you'll love that combo!

hows the combo feel salenity? is it lightweight? I know the patriarch got 10 bearings. Is it louder than the Supreme XT? I also like the Quantum Smoke. I heard nothing but awesome reviews about the Quantum smoke. Always wanted to try a Quantum also.

I've got the Smoke spinning reel. It's a nice reel and really light for its size, especially considering they aren't using carbon fiber or any of the fancy graphite composites out there. The Exo is real similar with some more weight shaved away.

I'd also look at the new Daiwa offerings. In particular, the Ballistic and the Lexa. The Pflueger Purist is also nice.

I just don't see a need to spend $300 on a spinning reel, there are some truly great ones out there for a lot less. You own one in the Pflueger Supreme XT

I can't tell you a lot about it yet I've only used it for a few minutes and haven't caught any fish with it yet. From what little I've used it I'm impressed to say the least.

I would add that the Shimano Saros and Symmetre are great values and balance very nicely on a Legend Extreme. Whatever you do, make sure you take the rod in with you to see how each reel feels when mounted on the rod.

I will take the rod in and test them.

Yeah im up and down. Dont get me wrong I love pfleugers, but if im spending over 300 on a rod, I want the reel to match.

Yea I own a supreme XT its on a rod though. Im looking to make another combo. I will look at daiwa also.

You all said which brands are good but which Reel itself is the best? Such as Gears, Bearings, Casting, Lightweight, how its made, composite, how smooth, durability, etc.. I want to know the best overall reel you have or have tried.

I like what everyone has said will try them all but still feel "stuck in the middle"

If you do choose the darkside then checkout Gander website, they still have these reels onsale for 20 bucks off and they ship for free.

My new President XT is quiet as a mouse, I wouldn't think the Spreme or patriarch would be noisy

LGM Gambler just got a headache.

Hey i just got a Stradic FJ a couple weeks ago and that thing is sweeeet.

Quantum/Zebco are the same company. If you would choose a company that will put a .99 cent bearing in a reel and pack it full of greese over a shimano something is wrong. I dont even own a shimano but I wouldnt trade a single shimano for a whole skid of quantums.

St. Croix makes top quality casting rods, no doubt. But I am not sold on their spinning rods. The guides are just too small, and cause a lot of friction on the St. Croix spinning rods that I've used.

Okay thanks all for the replies. Ill take a look at all reels this upcoming month. thanks all.
