fstr385 Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Im one of those people that mostly use what I know, but try new things once in a while. I never used it before and heard from a few people stren was good line. At the shop I noted I needed some mono. At first assuming it didnt say flouro or braid it was mono, I grabbed a clear 12lb spool of stren original. got home and seen it didnt say what it was. Guessing by their site its mono, even though it doesnt say it directly. Anyways cut the babble, I wound a few rods with it. A couple spinners and a couple casters. We went out, and I couldnt believe how many fish I lost!!! Bite after bite that day and landed maybe 7. Go to set the hook and it as if yanking the rod back 5 feet was 1/2" at the hook. Almost every hook set was a fail on all these newly lined poles. Replaced hooks, ect ect. Is it just me, or is this line some BS? We were like is it the fish?! I waited on a few like 10 seconds to swim around with it then would yank gone, or off at the shore, off halfway in, off on the hookset, left and right! *(&^%&$^#*()&**( Normally use berkley tri, and floro. Today I even tried it on my 7:1. and I would pull my tip from 2 feet off the water to over my head, and still lost about 50% At the end of the day today I would set hook and reel as fast as I could and run backwards. Insane! Quote
Super User Marty Posted January 23, 2013 Super User Posted January 23, 2013 Sorry about those lost fish. Before I switched to braid I used a lot of 10# Stren and Trilene XL and (fortunately) didn't have days like you experienced. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted January 23, 2013 Super User Posted January 23, 2013 Stren aka Stretch. 1 Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted January 23, 2013 Super User Posted January 23, 2013 You may have a bad spool. It happens unfortunately. The only stren that i could recommend is stren magnathin. I only use this in 4# for stream trout and it is incredibly strong. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted January 23, 2013 Super User Posted January 23, 2013 I grew up fishing stren and never had a problem. Sounds to me you have a bum spool Quote
fstr385 Posted January 23, 2013 Author Posted January 23, 2013 Hmm.. maybe. Ill give it that it was strong, tied easy, and has stayed straight so far, but it did seem super stretchy. Quote
HeavyDluxe Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 I used to fish Stren exclusively... Last year, after a couple of spools that just didn't seem 'right', I switched to Trilene XL. So far, I've been very happy with it. Still planning to mainly fish monofilament this year. Quote
Loop_Dad Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Yup, me to growing up fishing with Stren. It's been around for awhile therefore it is called "original". Never had problem like yours, or never heard of people complaining about the line like what you described. I still use it time to time and I got spare spinning spool with Stren original on it. I also love the clear blue florescent color. Quote
BasskingKeith Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Stren aka Stretch. LOL now I remember using Stren mono Quote
ripinthem Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 I still use Stren, but only for one application...TOP WATER! Stuff floats really good, but the stretch makes it not that sensitive for moving or bottom contact baits. For dawgs and poppers, where you watch the strike, it can sometimes excel over anything you got, as far as giving the bait action, and keeping them pinned. Quote
fstr385 Posted January 23, 2013 Author Posted January 23, 2013 Maybe that had something to do with it. It was all spinner, or hopping the bottom t rigged. The spinner reacted a little better, but I had alot less hits with it too, and it was trailer hooked. Quote
Dingah Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 I grew up fishing stren and never had a problem. Sounds to me you have a bum spool X2 Fished Stren All my life and never had a problem, if fished 4lb test all the way up to 12lb test works fine for me and thats all i use. Quote
PondBoss Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Where you breaking fish off? Or where the just coming unbuttoned? If they were just coming off, I'm thinking swinging for the fences like you said may have pulled a big hole in the fishes mouth and gave them more room to shake the hook. Your spinner spinner bait fish caught on the trailer hook are probably fish that you totally miss with a line that doesn't stretch as much. Trailer hook bites usually shows lack of commitment by the fish. I also used Stren almost my whole life with no problems. My dad still uses it today exclusively. If my Wal-Mart carried it I would most likely still have a reel spooled up with it. Give it another honest shot, everyone has a crummy day where nothing goes right, hopefully better results next time. Quote
fstr385 Posted January 23, 2013 Author Posted January 23, 2013 I started yanking so hard because of the consistent problem with hooksets. Most of them where gone AT the hookset, and a some on the way in. Its as if there wasnt rapid enough tension to pull the hook through the plastic and through the fish before it would spit it out, or pull out of its mouth. At the beging of the day, i just gave my normal pull. I never had this problem with any other mono and esp flouro except bps mono. I didnt have the issue with my other rods with different line that day, and its wasnt just me usimg that line that day having the same problem. I fish 4-5 times a week and never had it even close to this bad lol. Maybe Im retarded, or it was a bad spool, but I think Ill rip the line off a couple, put what I normally use on, and see what happens. Maybe ill make some sort of stretch test. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted January 23, 2013 Super User Posted January 23, 2013 I think its time to switch to YoZuri. Quote
Super User MCS Posted January 23, 2013 Super User Posted January 23, 2013 I fished stren most of my life, use trilene for backup reels/rods cuz it is cheap. I loved the megathin I used and was very high on that. Still good line but I finally wanted to try something new and found some sufix elite onsale. It casts great, silky and soft no memory,it is not as stretchy as the megathin, so I picked up some sufix siege, even better, a little stiffer and very tough but no issues. Needless to say I probably won't be using stren or trilene again. Quote
