Now there are reports out there that the Swine Flu vaccine is connected to narcolepsy.

Personally, I prefer not to have the shot.  Show me a drug that doesn't have a side effect beyond it's intended purpose and I'll show you a glass of water.

Nice! Last year "they" offered the swine flu vaccine as a buy 1 get 1 free vaccine with the flu shot even though the swine flu was not forecasted to be serious and no long term studies had been performed regarding its safety. Gotta love it... all about the $$$.

I got my shot today.  I was fine until a couple of hours ago, and then I started to feel woozy.   The wife said it's the wine.  Could be.  :dazed-7:

The vaccine in the article was never administered in the United States. When it comes to whether or not to get the flu shot, I play the odds. On average, 36,000 people die from the flu in the U.S. every year. Tens of thousands more get sick enough to require hospitalization. Those numbers are way higher than the number of people who have any serious reaction to the shot so I'd rather take my chances with the shot.

It's scientifically impossible to get the flu from the flu shot and it's also impossible to get the flu immediately after being exposed to the virus.

It is possible to get the flu from the mist vaccine as that contains live vaccine, but it is impossible to get it from the shot.

Also, most people get the stomach "flu" and think that they had the flu.  You didn't.  The stomach "flu" isn't respiratory influenza.  Respiratory influenza is what you're being vaccinated against.  The stomach "flu" isn't.

Now if you came down with the symptoms of Respiratory Influenza immediately after getting the shot, that means that you were exposed to the actual flu virus 3 to 5 days ago.  The incubation period of the virus is such that you will never get symptons immediately after being exposed to the virus.

Years ago the shot was a live virus and you could get the flu, now you can not.....................Al

Ya' know Al, as I explained about myself, I believe I do have those special medical reasons for not taking it......

But even aside from my different circumstances, I really have to agree with NorCalBassn's post >

On the other hand Al, if you have been taking them for 40 years without issue, your odds are probably better than most, that you could have them every year for the rest of your life, and never have any issues.....

Now, whether or not they will actually prevent any hard-core flu.... Ehhh. Maybe.

Peace,

Fish

Fish, I was in the Navy for 22 of those years and in the Navy the flu shot was not optional. I did refuse to take it once with the gun but they did give mine with a needle. I had taken the flu shot once with a gun and about 60 seconds later I thought my arm was going to fall off. Even though the Navy reguired the shot I would have taken it voluntarily. If I had your medical issues that would not have been the case...........................Al

Fortunately that vaccine was not administered here, but it's sad that pharmaceutical companies are more than happy to let less privileged populations be the guinea pigs. The numbers you mentioned (deaths and hospitalizations) are mostly the immunosuppressed with significant comorbidities and very, very, very rarely an otherwise healthy adult. It's a bummer that they have not (that I've seen) released the percentage of the national population (deaths and hospitalizations) that happened to have the flu shot. In the smaller studies and local audits I've seen, it's usually right at 50/50.

Norcal..You're right that the majority of fatalities are among the elderly or those with other health issues, but I have worked in several hospitals and have seen plenty of otherwise healthy people admitted with influenza. Influenza can be deadly to anybody depending on the strain or mutation. In 1918, there was a major flu pandemic that killed between 20-50 million people worldwide (some estimates go as high as 100 million). The strange thing about that one was that the majority of deaths were in young adults. The elderly and very young had lower mortality rates. Hopefully we will never see another strain like that one but you never know.

I've been getting a flu shot for 8 years.  Haven't had the flu in at least that many years.  I guess it offers about 80% resistance to all the strains out there.  For the past two years, I also get a pneumonia shot.  Never had it, but since I'm a Type 1 diabetic, it can't hurt.

J, don't forget your shingles shot.

My doctor started giving his patients the flu, pheumonia, tetanus and shingles shots when they attained 50 years of age.

Last physical in October made me feel like a puppy at the vets office with the all the shots the nurse gave me.

Hey! I'm not 50 yet, lol. I've had a talk about the shingles shot with my doc. My 30 year old cousin had it this past summer, and it sounded awful. I did have chicken pox as a kid, so I'm a candidate.

Sadly I just found out a few minutes ago that one of my 30yr old daughter's former classmates died in her sleep last night. It is being attributed to the flu. No word on whether she did or didn't have any other medical conditions although non were mentioned.

Very sad no matter how you look at it.

I've had a flu shot for several years now, just to placate my wife, the nurse.  I haven't had the flu since I started getting the shots.  That proves nothing however, because I don't recall getting the flu when I was getting flu shots.

I'm fortunate to have a good immune system.  When I was a kid, I never had mumps measles, chicken pox or German measels even though I was around several kids who did get them.  My cousin caught everything that was going around.  We lived next to each other, and were always together.  Went to the same school hung out with the same kids.  Just mention something was going around and within a couple of days he'd have it.

I told my doctor this after my childred had mumps and his reply was "you had them and never knew it". He told me that some people do not display the normal symptoms and can just keep going when they feel bad.......................Who knows.................Al

Technically, your doctor might be right.  I was definitely exposed to all of those childhood diseases.  Maybe I had them all, but my immune system took care of them before I developed any symptoms.  I know I never felt the slightest bit under the weather.

No matter what, if you haven't, I would get the shingles vac. I have heard horror stories about shingles. Not worth the risk................Al
