SudburyBasser Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 Looking to put together a reasonably priced baitcast crank bait set up. Does anyone have experience with this reel: http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Extreme-LowProfile-Baitcast-Reels/product/11092105011121/ Particularly for beginners as I don't have a lot of experience with baitcasting reels Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted January 21, 2013 Super User Posted January 21, 2013 I had one. Pretty decent reel. Mag only brakes. Smooth, casts pretty good. One of the better inexpensive reels BPS offers. Quote
Jell0b0y Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 These are not bad reels. i have had some of my Extremes for 7+ years that i still use. It looks like they have upgraded them from the plastic frame to all aluminum and those in your link have Dual braking system with mag and centrifugal. mine are so old that they only have the centrifugal and i am grandually replacing them but they have served me well for the price. Super User retiredbosn Posted January 21, 2013 Super User Posted January 21, 2013 Had one of the earlier models, it was a decent reel. This time of year is a great time to find deals Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted January 21, 2013 Super User Posted January 21, 2013 I had one. Pretty decent reel. Mag only brakes. Smooth, casts pretty good. One of the better inexpensive reels BPS offers. Agreed, had a couple myself, used them for a season, passed them on to my son and he is still using them. Hootie Quote
MArnold Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 This is the same as the Prolite special that Bass Pro has sold for $50! At the sale price these are good reels. I dont have the Extreme But I do have the Prolite special reel which is just a differant color. The reel is light 7.2oz, dual brakes but the centrifical brakes can not be turned off, there are four brake tabs. The reel casts good I have used mine for 1/8oz texasrigged baby brush hogs and 3/8th oz spinnerbaits on 15# trilene flourocarbon!! A nice reel for a beginner, my buddie Steve had this as his first baitcaster and did good, now he is moving up to the Pro Qualifier!! Quote
gripnrip Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 I love my PQ's! I have seen them as low as $70 on sale. They have over 600 reviews at 5 stars. I don't know anything about the Extreme but I am sure it is a great product. IMHO Quote
bassh8er Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 I'm a huge BPS reel fan and had the cranking version of the Extreme. I liked it and kept it, but I couldnt get used to the feel; too used to my PQs i guess. Nice little reel for the price, and though I prefer the PQ, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Extreme Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted January 21, 2013 Super User Posted January 21, 2013 My buddy has had an extreme for years now, he swears by it. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted January 21, 2013 Super User Posted January 21, 2013 I had one. Pretty decent reel. Mag only brakes. Smooth, casts pretty good. One of the better inexpensive reels BPS offers. Actually, its Dual Braking, but only the magnetic brakes are adjustable. There are 4 centrifugal brakes on all the time, cant turn them off without some surgery. But yep, it is in fact on of the better reels BPS offers, and I actually really like the profile of the reel. I'm already regretting letting go of the prolite I had. Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted January 21, 2013 Super User Posted January 21, 2013 Do you need a LH or.RH model. They still have a few LH cranking models for 40 bucks. Quote
Dingah Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 I have one of these reels and it is a great reel for the price, smooth casting and overall a great reel! -DINGAH Quote

Unfortunately I'm a righty so I need a RH model. Well, at any rate, with this many up votes looks like I'll be grabbing up a 5.3:1 model...assuming there any left by the time I get home from work :-) My thanks folks! UPDATE: Darn it, they accept PayPal so I didn't have to wait to get home and get the credit card. Oh well, ordered it after successfully avoiding the bait monkey for three weeks. I guess that's a kind of victory. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 The Extreme is a fine reel especially at the price point but the PQ is a bigger bang for the buck. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted January 22, 2013 Super User Posted January 22, 2013 The Extreme is a fine reel especially at the price point but the PQ is a bigger bang for the buck. WOW - Mike came up for some air. Hang in there good buddy during your busy season! Quote
SudburyBasser Posted January 22, 2013 Author Posted January 22, 2013 The Extreme is a fine reel especially at the price point but the PQ is a bigger bang for the buck. I have to admit that I was strongly inclined to go with the PQ but I figure at $60 the Extreme would be a good entry level to see if I'm not completely useless with a baitcaster. I will admit my previous experience was with an ancient Shimano Crestfire CR200A which had zero action left in it so perhaps I'll do better with the Extreme and eventually graduate to that Shimano Curado that I was sorely tempted by a few weeks ago. Zeeso Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 It is a solid reel. I have one. I was clueless with baitcasters before I picked up my first. Got a BPS carbonlite gold version. Awesome reel. Had no problems with learning, was on the lake fishing flawlessly the first day I owned it. I then bought a BPS PQ. Another solid reel. Again zero problems with backlashing or anything of the sort. Then bought an extreme that was on sale. Same thing. Excellent performance. Then bought a New version of the carbonlite, haven't had it out yet, but I am sure it will be the same. Moral of the story, in my eyes. You can't go wrong with a BPS reel that isn't of course something that costs 20$. I tend to believe that, while its nice to own some 300$ reel. You gotta remind yourself, the fish don't know what kind of rod and reel you are using. Hell, you could give some pros a spincast reel on an ugly stick and I am sure they could outfish some of us. As long as you take good care of it, I don't see any problems with the lower end reels and the BPS extreme is no exception. Quote
