Super User 00 mod Posted January 21, 2013 Super User Posted January 21, 2013 Ok, so yesterday was my first trip out using my GoPro. I did as Gene suggested and made my clips into shorter segments, rather than just leave it running. My footage was less than desirable, but I still want to put together a video. My problem is this, I am a total newb when it comes to videos. I have only ever shot stills before. I would like to be able to put together my clips, with music in the background, and text/ still shots to break up the segmented clips. I was assuming that the go pro would have these functions in here Cineform free software, but no. Seems the only things you can do in there is pick a starting and stopping point for your clips, rotate/and quality change. What do I need to do to put these clips together? Maybe I have what I need and do not understand? HELP????? Jeff Quote
Super User Shane J Posted January 21, 2013 Super User Posted January 21, 2013 I'm in the same boat as you. Just got one for Christmas, so I'm looking forward to hearing some of the more experienced video editor's advise. I downloaded a free trial of Corel Video Studio 5, but have no clue how to put this stuff together. Windows also has a software package that was pre-loaded with Windows 7, that they say is very easy to use. I haven't really gotten into it yet, but some feedback would definitely be appreciated. Like, how do you take a specific section of a video clip, and stick it in where you want it? Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted January 21, 2013 Super User Posted January 21, 2013 Ok guy's I hope this helps ! I do not have a gopro myself but I do a lot of computerwork with a friend that has one, what we use is a download from wondershare, for a lot of gopro models it's a free down load. So far I have found it to be available for windows, XP, VISTA, AND WINDOWS 7 AND 8, For Mac OS 10.5,6,7,8 (Mountain Lion) I personally have not used it for all of the above but I have used it for windows XP and Vista, the program is easy to use and it allows you to trim, cut, split, merge, and rotate, you can insert photos, text, audio and subtitles and so far it's been pretty good stuff to work with, it has a help section that explains everything in detail, far too much for me to explain on here. My advise would be to go to http://www.wondershare.net/ad/video-editor-win/?gclid=CLvahK2o-rQCFQWe4AodUkwAGQ See if that is what you are looking for. Hope that helps !! Quote
Super User Shane J Posted January 21, 2013 Super User Posted January 21, 2013 Looks like an easy to use program, Nitro. Thanks for the heads up. I'm in the clip gathering phase right now, and when I have some good stuff, I'm going to start putting together some clips. Quote

Hanover_Yakker Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 I'll throw in my .02 worth here on the video editing piece - when you are ready to upload, try and upload from the card directly into the software instead of through the camera. Also, disable your sleep modes and screen savers, because the uploads can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour depending upon how big your total file size is. Any hard drive activity or lack of response during the upload can sometimes be interpreted by different software packages as inacitivity or a fialed upload and will cease your current upload. As far as cleaning up, make sure that any videos you delete from the card are alo deleted from the Recycle Bin on your computer. If not, you may get a "FUL" error on the front panel of the GoPro. It has happened to me before and is quite frustrating when you are trying to take video on the water and don't have a card to use. I use an iMac, so I use iMovie, but you can also do basic editing straight in YouTube and not need to worry about any software on your computer. You can also add in music using them as well. Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted January 21, 2013 Super User Posted January 21, 2013 I have not had that issue with XP or Vista yet but it is a good idea to get rid of the deleated files from your recycle bin if it goes there. Good post HY !! Quote
Broke bass fisherman Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 Another thing to keep in mind is rendering. Once you compile everything together an have it spiffy it's time to make it a movie. This is called rendering. THIS TAKES FOREVER. Again disable any of the passive systems (screen saver, etc) that may run while rending. I have had to start over renders because my work computer auto locks every thirty minutes. Be patient and make sure you have all the time you need to render. I know a lot of guys that hit render and then go to bed. Naturally this time is different based on size of the file and format. Last HD vid I rendered was 10 minutes long and took 30 minutes to render to give you an idea. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted January 22, 2013 Super User Posted January 22, 2013 Sony Vegas is supposed to be a very good starter program for video editing. You can trial it but its pricey to buy. Another thing to consider is your pc. If you don't have the hardware to edit hd videos, you need to update that first. I have the Hero3 black and haven't really done much yet because my pcs are way out dated. I am about to pull the trigger soon on a pc. Once I get it, ill be recording everything. From what little I've used it, its a badass little camera. Quote
grizzly1654 Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Try the windows movie maker. I think it comes standard on most computers. It is a fairly easy program to use for editing. You can add credits, introductions, text and music to your videos. I think for the music you need to have an Itunes account to get the music off of or have the music on your computer. Quote

I used sony vegas pro a little bit in order to do green screen work and it is tough for someone without experience to comprehend. Ok, so yesterday was my first trip out using my GoPro. sbfishySC Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 I've done quite a bit of video editing myself, from GoPros to professional HD cameras. If you are editing in HD, you need a quality computer (fast processor, lots of RAM, good graphics card...etc). I personally use Adobe Premiere Pro, but it can be an expensive program. For basic stuff, I've found very little issues with using Windows Movie Maker. Sony Vegas isn't a bad choice either. If you're running a Mac, I've heard good things about iMovie as well as Final Cut Pro. As far as free programs, I can't really name any as I've never used them other than windows movie maker. YouTube is an invaluable resource for tutorials on how to use some programs and basic things in an editing software. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted January 22, 2013 Author Super User Posted January 22, 2013 OK, so I have my first video edited. Its not great but I want to host/send it. Yahoo mail won't send a file that large, so I was told to upload direct to youtube or gmail drive. Tried both, and they aren't working either. Let both run for hours, and only got to 17%. What gives? Must be something I am doing wrong. I can watch it on my "Windows Media Player"?????? Jeff Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted January 22, 2013 Super User Posted January 22, 2013 What file format did you save your final version in? Supported YouTube file formats Not sure which format to save your video? Receiving an "invalid file format error message when you're uploading"? Make sure that you’re using one of the following formats: .MOV .MPEG4 .AVI .WMV .MPEGPS .FLV 3GPP WebM Quote

sbfishySC Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Does it get stuck at 17% or it just crawls slow and when you check it hours later it's only at 17%? What's the size of the video? Could be your internet upload speed. speedtest.net should tell you how much upload you're getting. Quote

Could be your internet upload speed. speedtest.net should tell you how much upload you're getting. That was my second thought. Your ISP might throttle your upload or even stop it after a certain mb upload if you have a very basic internet plan and your upload speed is very low. Can you provide more info from your internet provider? Getting stuck at 17% would probably mean the file is accepted so that shouldn't be the problem. Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted January 22, 2013 Author Super User Posted January 22, 2013 OK, so when I came home for lunch earlier (12:40, it is now 5:21) I restarted the whole thing. Just got home and it is now at 17% again. Speedtest results seem off to me : Ping 166ms , Download speed 3.41Mbps , and upload speed 0.96 Mbps??? I am supposed to have good internet and it seems fast for everything else???? Jeff Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted January 22, 2013 Author Super User Posted January 22, 2013 File size is 812 MB and it is a .wmv file! Jeff Quote
tbone1993 Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 File size is 812 MB and it is a .wmv file! Jeff Can you upload it to google docs? Or is that still being a problem? 812mb is about a 5 minute video so it should upload for you. Quote
sbfishySC Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 At that size and upload rate, it should take you approx. 2 hours to upload the video. Can you render the video file again, perhaps in another format (or if not, just try again in .wmv format) and attempt the upload again? Since it is hanging at 17%, there may be a problem with the video file itself at that part of the encoding. That, or you are losing internet connection (even for the slightest second) to cause the upload to hang. If you can, try a re-render and re-upload in either a different format or the same format if need be. If that doesn't work, perhaps you can try uploading it at another location to see if it hangs somewhere other than youtube or wherever you are trying to upload. Quote

sbfishySC Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 Isnt that a bit slow? Is my internet connection slower than it should be? Jeff Your upload speed is probably around the average, but it definitely could be better. Your download speed is a bit below average I think. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted January 23, 2013 Super User Posted January 23, 2013 I believe your ISP could possibly be restricting your uploads if you only are showing .96mbps upload. That is really low. Are you on DSL/Cable/Sattelite? My upload speed on my internet at home is 7.4 mbps through Comcast cable internet. It's the only reason I keep Comcast because they have the best internet, hands down. If you can view your video in media player, then there is nothing wrong with it. The fact that it stops at 17% on each attempt leads me to believe you're exceeding a bandwith limit. http://www.speedtest.net'> Second time i did my test it was at 6mbps upload. Quote
