Maybe its getting to be that time of year for you; my C&R season doesn't even open for another month. I like poppers and frogs.

there is no better thing than a loud toilet bowl flush strike of a large mouth bass crushing a frog  :)

The most horrendous strikes I've ever seen came from smallies wacking a Super Spook.  Those were the most vicious strikes I have ever seen.  They knock that plug three feet in the air.  Unbelievable.  We'll have to wait for awhile for that deal though.

I would have to say the largest explosions that I have seen have come off of a ZOOM Horny Toad.  The "KERSPLUNK" sound has a definate uniqueness to it that is hard to forget, and is always at the back of my mind, even when fishing lures that arent topwater, haha.

Largemouth would be frogs. Smallmouth would be a Sammy or other walk the dog baits.

Smallmouth, big or small , seem to explode on any and every topwater bait I have caught them on. Largemouth.........it seems most of the time (not always) that the big explosive bites are smaller fish. The subtle slurp and bait disappearing usually is a bigger one. Big or small they do seem to blast hollow body frogs pretty violently.

The larger spook type baits. For me it's the rapala x walk 14 (saltwater model). This thing weighs 1 1/2oz (off the top of my head) and I've had fish knock it 3 feet in the air a few times. A certain fish in the 8lb range hit it knocking it out of the water 3 times, and I never stuck it. I actually think the bass was just trying to hit it and not eat....

There is a local lake, basically a deep trench, with big ledge at about 24-30'.  Walking baits at dusk is pretty much a guaranteed smallmouth bite as the sun slips below the hills.  You may get bit beating the banks, but the best is walking them over 60-70'.  They come rocketing out there, and just blast the baits.

River Smallies on a buzzbait. I have actually had the rod ripped out of my hands when I wasn't paying attention to the bait trying to navigate backwards around a rock in swift current. Besides that they always seem to crush a buzzbait like they hate it!

I've seen the biggest explosions on buzzbaits and ragetail shads.

Last summer I spent an afternoon long-line trolling buzzbaits back and forth over a shallow flat.  That day I saw some of the most vicious strikes I've ever seen.  It was a calm day without a cloud in the sky, in the middle of the afternoon.
