I saw the advertisement for the new Strike King 10xd crank bait and it got me thinking a little. This new addition to strike kings crankers is 6" long, dives 25ft, and weighs nearly 2oz.

I am all for throwing big deep crankbaits. But this thing is like a swimbait with a bill.

I dont really know what to think about this lure yet...mainly because its size and weight. Why beat your self to death cranking this thing when a fast sink Spro 6inchFat BBZ1 can get down there too and offers the big bait profile and types of lures need a magnum crank rod or swimbait rod. (A heavy action rod with mod action)

I would imagine 6" includes the bill? In which case its not "that" big.

Numb, i would hope thats the case and that what i oringinally thought until i ran out to garage and measured a 6xd with a tapemeasure and its pretty close to three iinches. TW lists all of the strike king cranks length from nose to tail. At least by what i can tell. And with the 10XD being listed at double the weight (2oz) of the 6XD (1oz) it kinda makes sense for it to be 6 inches from nose to tail. I guess well will have to weight a month or so for it to hit stores and we will see. But it sounds like a Monster of a cranker....

JezziHogg, as it stands today id have to fish that on my swimbait rod. I dont have a cranking rod that is rated to handle it.

Lol, I was wrong anyway the Magnum cranker is only rated up to 1 3/8 - The 10XD is beginning to sound more like a money grab

I'm actually really excited to try one. I am going to try and cast it on my 7'7" Cumara Reaction rod but I know it's specs don't go anywhere near the 2 oz of the 10XD. Just baby it for a while if I can. I just want to see one of these bad boys in action. I am also waiting on a Cumara A umbrella rig rod so I should be able to throw them on that once I get it.

 

I'm just starting to get into big swimbaits so I don't really have an opinion of those vs the 10XD. I don't think in my mind they're in the same category right now, it is very possible for my mind to be changed after actually geting my hands on one.

I'm going to give one a try on my 7'11 cumara even though its not rated for more than an oz.  Still think $15 is pretty steep for a bait you have to change hooks out on first thing.

I have the St Croix Magnum Cranker, and I won't be throwing the 10xd on it, I will probably use my Mojo flipping stick. It's mod/fast in action, and rated to 2 oz.

Lob casting should be fine on a rod thats not quite rated for 2 oz baits.

David Dudley threw his deep diving cranks with a flipping rod and raved about its hook setting ability in deep water on Ultimate match fishing a couple of years ago.

I've caught my pb on a deep diving crank this year. I have no choice, must try it out.

This thing makes a 6xd look like a child. I read somewhere that Mark Rose says it doesn't wear you out anymore than other deep divers do. I know his job is to sell the bait to us consumers but if thats true then that negates my initial concern that it would just be a so labour intensive to fish with. Looks like a big fish bait that can easily get down there to 25 ft plus on 12 lb line, probably even deeper on 10.

Different type of action between a crankbait and a swimbait.

My thoughts are the 6xd is more than I like to throw as it is. Ill throw a rattle trap or something that sinks and wait it out. Even if you throw a 10xd youre going to be doing like they did the other year in that tournament. Cast it out run the trolling motor across the lake, start crankn. Its not like youre gonna cast that baby out 30 yards and have it just dive bomb to 25ft.
