My Comobos - What Uses?

Hey guys - I have 5 combos and would like your input on what I should be using each for. Keep in mind I am bank fisherman who is looking for bass, but also nice sized panfish, or whatever is biting. And that in March my 1st child will be born (Son), so I might not be getting out as much I used to. I am trying to make sure I have certain uses for certain combos, so please include line type/size you would pair with them.

 

1. 5'6" Light Spinning Combo - My current use for this is for creek fishing for spots/largies/panfish (caught a 4.75 lb largemouth on Dec 1 with this one!)

2. 7' MH baitcasting Combo

3. 6'6" ML Spinning Combo

4. 6' M baitcasting Combo

5. 6' M Spincasting Ugly Stik Combo

I'll bite ...

 

As a bank fisherman myself I try to go as light as possible.  With that being said I also try mainly for bass or any other predator fish like pickeril, pike in the waters that I fish from shore.  I go with no more than 2 rods.  One baitcaster for power stuff (spinnerbaits, chatterbaits etc.) and a spinning outfit for weightless senkos, flukes, etc.

 

Here's my take on your list.

 

 

1. 5'6" Light Spinning Combo - Panfish delight.  8lb mono or FC (can go lighter if you prefer)  

2. 7' MH baitcasting Combo - Pitching jigs, T-Rig worms, Carolina rig etc  20lb FC

3. 6'6" ML Spinning Combo - 8lb FC.  Drop shot.

4. 6' M baitcasting Combo - 10-12lb FC.  Power Fishing spinnerbaits etc.

5. 6' M Spincasting Ugly Stik Combo - 10lb Braid, (8lb FC leader).  All purpose rod.  This is one of my setups from the bank.  The Braid sends baits a mile if you get a good brand or superline.  When I bring one rod to pound the bank this is it.

5. 6' M Spincasting Ugly Stik Combo-smaller cranks, jerkbaits, wacky rigs

When I think of bank fishing 3 things come to mind, vegetation, distance from the water (high banked canal or pond) and current.  I'm going to try to use the appropriate rod size for these variables, it becomes a matter of experimentation on your own bodies of water.

2. 7' MH baitcasting Combo - Pitching jigs, T-Rig worms, Carolina rig etc  20lb FC  also spinnerbaits

3. 6'6" ML Spinning Combo - 8lb FC.  Drop shot. & shakey head etc

4. 6' M baitcasting Combo - 10-12lb FC.  Power Fishing spinnerbaits etc. This is for crank baits( up til 10ft maybe 15) small spooks ,rebel pop rs 

5. 6' M Spincasting Ugly Stik Combo - 10lb Braid, (8lb FC leader).  All purpose rod.  This is one of my setups from the bank.  The Braid sends baits a mile if you get a good brand or superline.  When I bring one rod to pound the bank this is it.senkos weightless plastics etc

B, I want to add that you need to view the rod's specifications and stay within those paramaters for line test size and bait weight.

 

If you do this the rod will perform as expected.

 

So what baits to throw?  Simple question with a very complicated answer.

 

The general concensus is ANYTHING YOU WANT as long as the bait size is what the rod's specs say to use.

 

1. 5'6" Light Spinning Combo - Panfish delight.  8lb mono or FC (can go lighter if you prefer) - Go with 4 or 6 pound floruocarbon line. You can practice skipping your bait under trees, bushes, docks, etc. Small baits on small hooks or jig heads, like white single tail grubs, can work wonders.

  

2. 7' MH baitcasting Combo - Pitching jigs, T-Rig worms, Carolina rig etc  20lb FC - Excellent! You may want to scale down the line size to 12 pounds flourocarbon with the exception of mono for treble hook baits. Be careful with the Carolina rig depending on the weight size. You may want to stay with the 20-pound test for the Carolina rig if the rod can handle it. Once again, check the rod's specifications printed near the handle.

 

3. 6'6" ML Spinning Combo - 8lb FC.  Drop shot.- Go with the lightest test line the rod can accommodate for drop shot. The lighter the line the more action for the bait in the current.

 

4. 6' M baitcasting Combo - 10-12lb FC.  Power Fishing spinnerbaits etc. - Good setup. Don't forget your Chatterbaits.

 

5. 6' M Spincasting Ugly Stik Combo - 10lb Braid, (8lb FC leader).  All purpose rod.  This is one of my setups from the bank.  The Braid sends baits a mile if you get a good brand or superline.  When I bring one rod to pound the bank this is it. - If it ain't broke don't fix it. Just remember to balance the size of the braid to the line test on the rod. I still use my Ugly Sticks at ponds or when I am fun fishing.

 

The most attractive setup you will hear will be a 6-foot six-inch medium heavy rod for bass fishing, be it baitcaster or spinning rig.

 

I like to go longer, 6-8, 6-10, 7-0 and 7-2. 7 footers are my favorites.

I like the heavy action rods for Carolina rigs, Alabama rigs, deep diving crankbaits and frogs.

 

Pair up your rods with any 2500 reel and you are ready to rock and roll. The 5-6 spinning rod will probably do best with a 1000 size reel.

 

Remember, try to get away with the lightest line test you can. You can control the depth of the crankbaits with line test so there are times when you want a heaver line test.

 

If you go to Tackle Warehouse or the manufacture's web pages you can read what they say about technique specific rods. It is always interesting to read what the guys post and their favorite and not so favorite rods.

 

The pros will hawk their rods. VanDam and Quantum; Skeet on his beautiful yellow rods; Duckett on his rods; Martens on Megabass. Just listen and read to what they say and select the rods of your choice. Remember they have a financial interest in what they are hawking so make notes, ask us about any rods and then make your future purchase.

If you are going to do any fishing with live bait, do yourself a favor and buy one of these.  They work great.  Hook the end over the line, slide it down until it stops, pull trigger and fish drops off.  Had one when I was a youngster fishing with whatever bait I could dig up or find along the shore.
