Line For Top Water

What is a good line to use for top water in a heavily weeded pond with some huge bass?

Define topwater...

 

Are we talking frogs? Poppers? Spooks? Wakebaits? Shellcracker G2? MS (Mini?) Slammer?

 

I used 12 lb mono for frogs for years, but after making the switch to braid... I will never go back.

 

For treble type topwaters, I would recommend mono. I fish some seriously nasty stuff in La, but I have never needed more than 12 lb test. 14 may help a bit on bigger fish.

 

For the smaller size wakebaits (Shellcracker G2, etc.) braid will also do you just fine.

 

For larger wakebaits (MS Slammer, etc) most guys move to heavy mono to avoid snapping the braid if the cast backlashes or whatnot. Watching a 25+ dollar wakebait sail through the air can be an upsetting experience, so I hear. Not a big deal as long as you can get to it before a bass, I guess.

I throw spooks mainly, I usually use 30lb braid but was thinking of making a switch to 20 because of the 6lb diameter,

Also what would be a good spook that's 6 inches plus with a color similar to the heddon "Florida bass"color

I use 12lb Trilene for my spooks, and I live in S FL. I see no reason to use braid for it, but its not to say you cant.

I use 10-12lb Mono for "walk the dog" spook style baits. The stretch in the mono improves the action of the bait and is more forgiving if you set the hook too early on a strike.

I switched to braid on all my topwater lures. The hardest thing to get use to is waiting to feel the fish before you set the hook. When I first started, I pulled the lure away before the fish ever had it completely in its mouth.

Unless it's fresh spool of braid with some "body," it fouls too easily in the trebles of walk the dog, spook type baits.  I prefer 10-12# CXX for these.  For hollow, weedless frogs, braid is a great choice.

I have suffix elite line in 14lb, boy is it stretchy. The baits walk well, but when I have to undo a snag I have to make sure to duck

I throw all topwater on 10-20lb braid. Set your drag correctly and its great. You can walk the dog with minimal effort using braid...

Braid is what I use for all topwater, 30-50 lb for frogs, and 20-30lb for spooks, pop-r's, etc... No leaders, just straight to the bait. Personaly I have never had any issues with it getting tangled or fouling in the treble hooks of baits.

I like to throw my large topwaters, frogs, half oz buzz baits, big spooks, lunker plunkers, and big wake baits on my frog rod. So im using at least 50lb braid.

On my most used topwaters like sammys, gunfish, poprs, prop lures, ill useto 8-12 mono

I say as low as eight, because i like to throw the lighter ones on a spinning rod.

Its going to be used for lunker punkers and super spooks for the most part, should I stick with 30 braid, no mono because it shreds up in that pond from all the trees, stumps,weeds and other crap in there

I like to use Spiderwire but I hear ya. I always make sure I have my sunglasses on and I try my best to angle the bait away from me when it snags.

You kind of answered your own question. IMO you only have one option when throwing Spooks and that's a good mono like original Stren or Trilene XT.  I personally use 14lb. Stren almost exclusively for fishing Spooks and will bump it up to 17 if I know I'll be in the 'woods'.  If you think the fish will shy away from the heavier line, don't believe it.  I caught my PB on a spook with the 14lb. Stren in a strip pit with gin clear water at 11:00 A.M.  in July  under blue bird skies.  BTW, heavier mono will keep your line up and out of the nasty stuff. Once you hook them, it's up to you to keep them out of it.
